IININGACHIHE BIT BOX Filed Dec. 23. 1927 Inventor l. C flffarj wmwh Attorng Patented Aug. 20, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. LYTTLE AND LUTHER C. HAGGARD, OF HENRYETTA, OKLAHOMA.
MINING-MACHINE-BIT BOX.
Application filed December 23, 1927.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in boxes for receving the various types of bits employed in a mining machine so that the same will not become mislaid or lost.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
F igure 1 is a side elcvation of our improved bit box.
F igure 2 is a view mostly in vertical section, and
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the present bit box.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, our novel invention consists of a cylindrical container 5, the side wall of which is preferably formed from a section of discarded piping. The bottom wall 6 of the container is formed from any suitable rigid material and is disposed within the bottom of the section of piping, after which the lower end of the piping section' is turned inwardly to provide a supporting flange 7. A suitable number of short rivets 8 are driven through the container above the bottom wall 6 so that the heads upon the inner ends thereof will wedge against the bottom Wall (i to prevent upward movement of the bottom wall within said container.
The present bit box further includes a lid 9 in the form of a metallic disk of less diameter than the internal diameter than the pipe section so that said lid may be easily arranged therein as disclosed in Figure 2. The side wall of the container at a point inwardly of its upper end is provided with rivets 10, the inner ends of which will afiord stops for the said lid to limit the inward movement of the same within the container. This lid is equipped with a hanclle 12 preferably in the form of a U-bolt, the ends of the legs of which are secured within openings of the lid by nuts as disclosed in Figures 2 and 3.
The said container 5 is formed adjacent its upper end with opposed openings 13-13 through which a bolt 14 is disposed after the lid is arranged within the container, one end of the bolt being headed, while the oppo- Serial No. 242,()97.
site end is threaded for receiving a wing nut 15. Obvously, after this bolt is arranged through the openings above the lid 9 and a nut 15 secured thereon, the lid is maintained in proper position within the container so as to prevent the bits dropping therefrom should the box fall upon the floor or be turned over. F urthermore, the particular character of the handle 12 pernits the box to be hung upon the mining machine and at some convenient place to permit the bit to be used when required.
Preferably the container 5 is equipped with a name and number plate 16 so that the proper name and number of the particular machine with which the bits within the box are to be used are placed.
Even though we have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements, it is nevertheless to be understood that some changes may be made thei-ein without affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
A devce of the class described, a container open at its upper end, a removable plate like lid for disposition within the upper end portion of the container, headed elements extending through the side of the container at a point below the upper edge thereof, the heads of said elements being disposed on the inside of the container to provide a support for the lid, said container being formed of a pair of opposed openings at a point above the headed elements, a cross bolt adapted to be arranged through the openings for engagement with the upper face of the lid, the head of the bolt engaging with the outer face of the container, and a nut threaded on the threaded end of the bolt for engagement with the outer face of the opposite portion of the container.
In testimony Whereof We affix our signatures.
WVILLIAM A. LYTTLE. LUTHER C. HAGGARD.
