Thew present invention relates to condiment holders, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of the combined salt and pepper shaker type, having removable salt and pepper containers, and a closure element adapted to form a closure for either or both of said containers.

Accordingly, l have devised an improved construction comprising a pair of containers adapted to be removably held in position with their upper ends embraced by a. housing member having a continuous web portion extending lengthwise between and the full length of said containers, and having improved provision for detachably securing a base member to the lower end ot' said web portion. y

In the preferred form of the construction, the base member includes a screw structure which cooperates with the topv or housing portion for retaining the containers or condiment receptacles in assembled relation.

With the foregoing objects in view, the invention 'will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating one form ot the improved construction which I have devised for embodying the invention, ai'ter which those features and combinations thereotl deemed to be novel will be set forth and claimed.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, this illustrates the improved construction as comprising a pair of salt and pepper containers or receptacles 10 of duplicate and any desired ornamental form, as for example, of substantially semicircular cross-section and for the most part tapering longitudinally downward as represented in Figures 1, 3 and 5. The containers are adapted to be held in assembled relation between a base member 12 and an upper or housing portion 14 of substantially hcniispherical Ytorni and adapted to fit over the upper ends or' the containers by means of a marginal flange portion 14. The interior ot' the housing por tion is 'divided by a web 30 into a pair of outlet chambers 15 adapted to be brought into communication with the upper ends of the containers 10, each of said compartments being provided with a set of shaker outlet openings lo for which a closure element comprising a substantially hemispherical shell or casing 17 is provided, having a set of shaker openings 18 for each set. ot outlet openings 1G. The closure element 17 is secured in position by means of a cap screw 21 having its shank portion threaded into the upper end or' the housing member lei, a coil spring 22 beinglitted within a shallow recess 23 about the shank of the screw .21 (as represented in Figure 8) .lor retaining the closure element in yielding frietional en gagement with the outer tace of the housing 14.

The lower margin of the closure element 17 is 'provided at diametrically oppositepoints with finger-engaging lrnobs or pro jcctions 25 for convenience in manipulating the closure element for the purpose of bringing either of the sets of openings 1G-18 into register, according to which condiment is desired.

The openings 18 of the closure element 17 Will bear such relation to the openings 1G oll the housing member 1l that the closure element may be turned into a position for closing both sets ot openings 1G, or for opening either of said sets of openings 1G while maintaining the other set closed, according to the container from which it is desired to shake the contents.

A stop or limiting pin 28 provided on the inner face of the closure element 17 and riding in a short slot 29 in the adjacent face of the housing member 1li, serves to limit the turning movement of the closure element-see Figure 3.

The central web 30 forming the partition between the outlet chambers 15 within the housing member is extended on downlengthwise and the full length of the containers 10 asindicated at 30 `to form a partition member between said containers, as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, the sides of the containers being formed .with abutting flanges 31 projecting across and concealing the edges of the partition extension 30', and thus leaving a single crack` or seam where these flanges meet at the sides of the containers.

The lower end of the web extension 30 is provided with a screw element 32 as represented in Figure 6, serving as a means for detachably securing the base member 12 which is formed with a screw socket for cooperating with the element 32, as illustrated in Figure 3. Preferably the upper face of the screw element 32 is formed with inwardly sloping seat-s or shoulders 34 for receiving the similarly sloping seats or shoulders 35 formed on the lower end portions of the containers 10, thereby serving to more securely hold the latter in assembled relation and guard against casual displacement of the containers during the application or removal of the base member 12.

The upper margins of the containers are sloped inwardly and adapted to fit within the outwardly flaring margins of the hous ing 14; and the interior of this portion of the housing 14 is formed with a suitable shoulder 36, and a similar shoulder formation 37 is provided at opposite sides of the web 30-30 for engagement with the inthe object of said shoulders being to prevent any of the contents from sifting back between the containers and either the web or the outer margin 14 of the housing member. It will be observed from Figure 3 that the screwing of the base member 12 on to the screw element 32 forces the upper ends of the containers into clamping engagement with said shoulders 36-37 and on detachment or removal of the base member, forfillingl and replacing of the'containers, the same are momentarily supported upon the shoulders 34, the inward slope of which serves to effectively retain the containers against any casual displacement at such times.

It will thus be seen that I have devised a very neat, attractive, compact and serviceable construction for carrying out all the desired objects of my invention, Vthe same being adapted to be embodied in any graceful and ornamental design simulating a single shaker unit, which at the same time possessing all the essential requirements of the separate shaker units for maintaining a supply of each of the two different kinds of condiments.

While I have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred form of construction for embodying the proposed improvements, I desire to be understood as reserving the right to make all such changes or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:

1. A condiment holder comprising a pair of containers, a housing member having a discharge or outlet compartment for each of said containers, an extension from said housing member projecting between said containers, the sides of said containers having longitudinal anges projecting into abuttingrelation across the sides of said extension for concealing the latter, and a base member detachably'itted to the lower end of said extension and embracing the lower ends of both containers.

2. A condiment holder com )rising a pair of containers,V a housing mem er having an outlet compartment for each of said containers, an extension from said housing member projecting between said containers and formed with shoulders for engagement with both the top and bottom margins thereof, and a base member having a detachable screw connection to the lower end of said extension and embracing the lower ends of both of said containers.

3. A condiment holder comprising a pair of containers, a housing member having an outlet compartment for each of said containers, an extension from said housing member projecting between said containers, the lower end of said extension being provided 'with a pair of inwardly sloping shouldersA forming temporary supporting seats for the lower ends of the containers, and a base member detachably fitted to theA lower end of said extension and embracing the lower ends of the containers.

4. A condimeiit holder comprising a pair of containers, a housing member having an outlet compartment for each of said containers, an extension from said housing member projecting between said containers, the lower end of said extension being provided with a pair of f inwardly sloping shoulders forming temporary supporting seats for the containers and the latter having similarly sloping shoulders for engagement with said seats, and a base member detachably secured to said extension and embracing the lower ends of both containers.

5.
