Aug. 641929. FREEMAN v 1,723,980
SUIT HANGER Filed Jan. 1929 WITNESS: m-ronnsv AZorzzafieemarz,
Patented Aug. 6, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO FREEMAN, OF BLACKSBURG, VIRGINIA.
SUIT HANG-ER.
Application filed January 9, 1929.
My present invention has reference to a garment hanger and my primary object is the orovision of an article of this character in which the pants or trousers supporting bar is removably fixed to the arms of the coat hanger, so that the coat hanger can be used independent of the bar and likewise Wherein the trousers holding bar is provided with impinging elements in the nature of pins for piercing Without endangering the clothing arranged on the bar.
A still further object is the provision of a .novel latching means for positively holding the trousers bar upon the arms of the hanger which also permits of easy and quick removal of the said bar from the said arms should occasion require.
To the attainment of the ii'oregoing the invention consists in the improvement heroinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the improve ment.
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation with parts in section to illustrate the manner in which the trousers holding bar is latched on the coat hanger.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View approximately on the line 33 of Figure 2.
The coat and vest hanger 1 is of the usual wooden construction, the same being formed with the oppositely extending downwardly inclined arms 2 and the center of the hanger 1 has swivelly attached thereto the support ing hook 3. The enc s of the arms 2 at their under faces are cut at an inclination, as at 4, and each of the said arms directly above and approximately in a line with the said inclined face 4- has embedded therein a socket member 5 that has a partially open top through which there is partly projected a catch in the nature of a sphere 6 that is influenced by a spring 7. The transverse element 8 against which the lower convolution of the spring rests serves as a means for holding the socket in the arm. The trousers holding bar is indicated by the numeral 9. This bar on its outer face and at points equi- Serial No. 331,213.
distant of its length is provided with comparatively small impinging elements 10, such as pins. The ends of the bar 9, at its said upper face, are beveled, as at 11 to coengage with the inclined or beveled surfaces d of the arms 2. Each arm 2 has hingedly associated with the sides and adjacent to the outer ends thereof the inwardly directed ends of the arms of a substantially U-shaped bail 12. The ball is swingable over the rounded outer corners of the arms 2 and like wise over the spring influenced catch 6. When engaged by the catch the bail effectively holds the bar 9 on the arms of the hanger.
The simplicity and advantages of the con struction will, it is thought, be understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art when the foregoing description has been carefully read in connection with the ac-- companying drawings so that further detailed description will not be required.
lr'laving described the invention, 1 claim:
1. A coat hanger comprising a n'iomber having angle arms, a spring influenced catch on each arm, adjacent to the end thereof, a trousers holding bar and a bail on each of the ends of the bar swingable over the ends of the arms of the hanger and engageable with the catch thereon.
2. A coat hanger comprising a member having angle arms whose outer corners are rounded and whose under faces, at the said corners, are beveled, a trousers holding bar having beveled ends to contact with the beveled faces of the arms, a bail pivotally secured to the sides and swingable over the rounded ends of the arms of the hanger, socket members ei'nbedded in the rounded corners of the arms, a spring influenced catch partly movable through each of said sockets and e1'igageable with the bails, and means holding the sockets in the arms and providing a rest for the lower convolution of the spring means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ALONZO FREEMAN.
