This invention is founded primarily upon a recognition of the need of providing a liquid dispensing pump for dispensing flavoring sirups at soda fountains; for exam: ple-whose parts will be so correlated that the interests of the customer on the one hand and of the proprietor on the other hand will be safeguarded by insuring that.
neither more nor less than the precise quantity of liquid predetermined therefor may be dispensed at any operation of the pump or, stated otherwise, that it shall not be within the power of the operative of the pump, by any species of manipulation of the handle of the pump, to deliver either more or less than the amount of liquid, predetermined as a measured charge.
The instant application is a division, in
' part, of an earlier application for certain improvements in dispensing pumps filed by me in the United States atent Ofiice on November 17, 1926, and numbered, serially 148,860; several of the claims now forming a part of this application having originated in my earlier application and having been transferred to the instant application in order that they may issue simultaneously with other claims which originated in the instant application and which do not read upon the structure shown and described'in my said earlier application.
Among the features common tothe pump shown and described, but not broadly claimed, in my said earlier application and shown, described and claimed in the instant application are a piston, each movable relatively to the other, and co-acting fastening elements respectively movable with the piston and said member, so correlated that endwise movement imparted to said member relatively to the piston will bring about a releasable engagement of said fastening elements with each other, whereby said member and the piston are operatively connected for unitary movement: both my former-and my present pump also including, as a part of the piston operating means, a means, as a spring, for imparting the said unitary movement to said member and piston in a direction which causes a charge of the liquid which was previously stored, preferably in a discharge spout forming part of the pump to be discharged, and both of said pumps further including an element which,

at the end of theliquid discharging movement; acts' upon one of the fastenlng elements to release it from the complementary element to thereby automatically free 'the plston from the said endwise movable member ofthe operating means, whereupon the piston is permitted to return to its original position. It may be here mentioned that in each operation of the pump a charge of liquid previously stored in the piston chamher is forced into the discharge spout and replaces the charge delivered at the same operation of the pump, and that a fresh charge of liquid is automatically supplied to the piston chamber to be later dispensed. This sequence of operations is repeated for the dispensing. of each charge of liquid. The supply of each charge of liquid to the piston chamber is preferably efiected by means shown in bpth my applications, but not claimed in the instant application, and which means includes a port formed in the piston and controlled by a valve which is opened automatically during the intake stroke of the piston andis closed automatically at the end of said intake stroke and remains closed during the discharging stroke of the piston. The charge of liquid which is dispensed at each operation of the pump is preferably stored in a spout providedwith a check valve, not here claimed, to prevent it from draining back into the piston cham- There are certain other broad similarities in respect of details of the, piston operating mechanism, casing means, etc., which are now claimed in the instant application, and certain specific differences in respect of the piston operating means which have been claimed in the applications. in which they respectively belong. For example In my prior pump, as also in my present pump, the piston operating means includes an endwise movable handle member, proper, which imparts endwise movement, relatively to the piston, to the member through which an operative engagement of the piston with the piston operating means is effected. In
my prior pump said handle member and the said endwise movable member were c0nnected to move as a unit at all times and hence the handle member moved with the piston and with said endwise movable member during the working stroke of the piston. The
generic structure in respect of these means is herein claimed while the form in which the handle member and said endwise movable member are connected to move as a unit at all times is claimed in my aforesaid earlier filed application.
The pump illustrated in the instant application 1s distinguished from that illustrated in my aforesaid earlier application in that the handle member, proper, and the endwise movable member which carries one of the elements by which the piston is connected to the operating means are not operatively connected to each other during the working stroke of the piston. Hence, the working stroke imparted to the piston will be unaffected b any movement imparted to the handle memlier, proper, at this time and will also occur even though said handle member be held down'by the operative in the position to which it was moved in bringing the parts into their co-operative relationship for said workin stroke. This new correlation of parts, iorming the subject matter of claims embodied in the instant applica' tion, results in a better insurance against any variation in the charge delivered, since it makes it impossible. for the operative by any kind of manipulation of the handle during the operation of the piston to deliver less or more liquid than has been predetermined by the setting of the parts.

e pump is of that type which is intended to be inserted in a suitable container,
maaeoe indicated in dotted outline at X in Fig. 2. The piston is here exemplified as being of that type which includes a head 10 and a' stem or rod 12 said head operating within a chamber 11 having an open inner end and the stem 12 extending through'a guide 13 which is secured to the top of the chamber 11 and has a longitudinal recess 14 in its outer end, and is provided with a pivoted latch 15 having a head 15. The piston head 10, herein shown for exemplary purposes but not herein specifically claimed, is provided with ports 16 for the inlet of the liquid from the container X to the chamber 11 and with a flap valve 17 to close these inlets. The chamber 11 is provided with an outlet port 18 leading to a spout which includes a portion 19 in which a charge of liquid to be dispensed is stored and a portion 20 having a port 21 through which the said charge of liquid is ejected. A valve 22 having a beveled section 22' engaging a correspondingly formed seat controls communication between the spout and the chamber 11.
Respects herein claimed, in which this pump as herein illustrated is similar to the illustrated embodiment shown in my said earlier application for patent have relation to the means co-operating with the latch 15 to fasten the piston operating mechanism and piston together for unitary movement, since it will be noticed that I have herein illustrated and claimed as a part of the instant pump, a head 23 which is carried by an endwise movable member 24 (herein called operating member) of the piston operating mechanism and is to be engaged by the head 15 of the latch 15 when the piston operating mechanism and piston have been moved relatively to a position suitable for such engagement; means including a lateral projection 25 from the latch 15 and a spring 26 for holding the latch under tension in the path of the head 23; a member 27 which is adjust-ably fixed in the path of movement of the head "of the latch 15 and operates to disengage the latch automatically from the member 23; a member 28 which is encircled by the spring 26 and moves with the head 23 and member 24: and traverses the recess 14 in the upper end of the piston stem 12; and a spring 29 which is operative to effect the unitary movement of the piston and piston operating mechanism. Moreover, I have utilized in the production of the present pump a. collar 30 by which the pump is attached to the mouth of an appropriate container X and through which the piston operating mechanism and the spout extend.
It will be seen that endwise movement imparted to the member 24: of the piston operating mechanism relatively to the piston mechanism will bring about an engagement of the latch head 15 and the head 23 efi'ective to fasten the piston and the pistonopen ating mechanism together,-and that durlng this movement of the piston 0 rating mechanism the spring 26 is put un er tension and by its pressure upon the lateral extension 25 from the-latch 15 holds the head of said latch under tension in the path of movement of the head 23 and causes the head of.
the latch to snap into position over the head 23 when the latter, has reached aplace at which this movement can occur. During this movement of the piston operat ng mechanism relative to the piston, the spring 29 also is placed under tension and becomes efi'ective to bring about the unitary"mo vement of the piston and piston operating mechanism thus far described.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, this unitary movement is the liquid discharging movement. It causes a charge of li uid which was previously stored in the c amber 11 to raise the valve 22 and to replace a charge of liquid which was previously stored in the spout, the latter being ejected throu h the port 21. The valve 22 operates at t is time to prevent any return of liquid from the spout 19 to the chamber 11 and the valve 17 operates during this same time to prevent the admission of any additional liquid from the container X to that portion of the chamber 11 which is above the piston. Immediately before the discharge of the charge of liquid from the s out 19 and the placing in said spout 19 o a new charge, the head 15' of the latch 15 is brought into engagement with the member 27 and further movement of said head is in contact with said memher. The contacting surfaces of the head and member are such that the head 15' is forced out of engagement with the head 23 thereby freeing the piston from the piston operating mechanism. The piston being thus freed automatically returns, under the influence of gravity and assisted by the spring 26, to its original position. During its return, its valve 17 is opened to thereby permit the ingress into the chamber 11 of a charge of liquid from the container X to replace the charge which, in the prior movement of the piston in the opposite direction, was expelled from said chamber and res placed the charge in the spout. During this movement, the check valve 22 is held to its seat by the weight of the charge which had been supplied to the spout 19 in the immediately preceding operation of the piston.
It will be observed that in the pump herein illustrated for exemplary purposes, the correlation between'the handle member, designated 31, and the remaining members of the piston operating mechanism is such that the handle member has movement with the remaining members of the piston operating members in the non-discharging stroke of the piston only. In other words, the correlation is such that the piston and those parts including the operating member 24,01. the piston operating mechanism which are attached to each other during the liquid discharging stroke of the piston are moved unitarily and relatively to the handle member during the non-liquid discharging stroke of the iston. To this end, I have provided the andle member 31 with a pivoted dog having a member 32 and a member 33. The member 32 of this dog engages a collar or other suitable circumferential projection 34 mounted at the outer end of the member 24 and transmits longitudinal movement to the member 24 when the handle member 31 is giveninward endwise movement. The collar 34 not only serves as a means to beengaged by the member 32 of the dog but also serves as an abutment for the spring 29, the opposite abutment for said spring being provided by the inner wall 35 of a recess 36 formed in the latch releasing member 27.
The handle member 31 is hollow and encases a spring 37 whose inner end bears against a fixed member 38. A sleeve 39 extends from the member 38 to the member 27 and encases the spring 29and that portion of the member 24 which is encircled by said' spring 29. The sleeve 39.has a lonentering a space 41' provided for its reception. The parts are relatively so positioned that this release of the member 32 from the member 24 will occur at the moment the head 15 of the latch 15 has engaged the head 23 of the member 24. It will be evident, therefore, that the movement which is now given the piston mechanism and the member. 24 of the piston operating mechanism to effect the dispensing of a charge of the liquid will be relative 'to the handle member 31 and will be entirely unaffected by any movement given said handle member and similarly unaffected even though the handle member be held down in'its inward position by the operative. It will be noticed that while the handle member was being moved endwise inwardly, its spring 37 was placed under tension and has thereby ,become operative to return the handle and the dog to their outward positions as soon as the operative has released pressure upon sa1d member. In this return, the member 32 of the dog traversesthe slot 40 in' the sleeve 39 and when it has reached its outward position, it automatically =re-engages with them: er end of the member 24 by the force 0 gravity or by "a light spring, or by gravity assisted by a spring, as preferred. A
In this particular construction, the abutment 41 is provided by the upper end of a member 42 whose lower end is screwed into a plug 43 which closes one end of a sleeve 44, the other end of which sleeve is closed by a cap 45 through which the handle member 31 operates. This sleeve encases the handle member 31 when the latter is in its inward position and also encases at all times the dog and that portion of the mechanism which is between the member 27 and the abutment 38. The sleeve 44 extends through the collar 30. The member 42 whose upper end trips the dog by which the handle member is connected to the remainder of the piston operating means is adjustable and the member 27 by which the latch 15 is tripped and thereby released from the head 23 also is adjustable, these adjustments being to determine the points at which the parts referred to shall be tripped and hence determine the exact amount of liquid which shall be dispensed at each operation of the ump. These adjustments may be provided tor by threading the said plug 43 upon the sleeves 39 and 44 and by threading the member 27 upon the sleeve 29.
The portion of the pump between the plug '43 and the guide 13 is encased to prevent convenient access to the plug 43 and member 27 to thereby make it inconvenient for the operative to change the adjustment of said plug and member and also to pr0- tect the latch against possible injury resulting from impact. This encasement, in the exemplified form of the invention is pro vided for by extending a sleeve 46 from the head of the plug 43 to the guide member 13. It is secured by screwing its ends to said head and guide.
From the foregoing the purposes, advantages and operation of my improved pump will be readily comprehended and I would have it understood that the embodiment herein illustrated should be regarded as merely exemplary since I realize that changes may be made without departure from the scope of appended claims.
Having thus described my invention-and a brief embodiment thereof what I believe to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, and what I, therefore, claim is 1. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an operating member and a piston, the operating member having 'endwise movement relatively to the piston and the piston having movement relatively to the operating member, and means to connect said members to each other for unitary movement and to v disconnect them from each other for their relative movement, including complementary fastenin elements respectively movable with sai operating member and piston and releasably engageable with each other by endwise movement of the operating member relatively to the piston.
2. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an operating member and a liquid-discharging member, normally free from operative connection with, and having non-liquid-discharging movement, relatively to, each other;
gaged to connect said members to each other for unitary liquid-discharging movement; and with a means operative at the end of the liquid-discharging movement to free said elements from each other and thereby permit the liquid-discharging member to return to its normal, non-operating, position.
3. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an operating member'and a liquid-discharging member,havi;ng reciprocatory discharging and non-discharging movements and movable relatively to each other during their non-discharging movements and unitarily during their discharging movements, and means including releasable elements which are automatically engaged with each other at the end of the non-discharging movement of the operating member and are automatically freed from their engagement with each other at the end of the discharging movement ofthe member and which elements when engaged with each other connect the members ,for unitary movement.
4. A liquid dispensing pump comprising a movable operating member, a movable liquid-discharging member having a nonoperating position in which it is free from operative connection with the operating member, connecting means operative when the operating member has traversed a predetermined distance relatively to the liqmid-discharging member to connect said' members to each other, resilient means operative when the members have been so connected to move them unitarily a predetermined distance for the discharge of the liquid, and means operative with relation to the connecting means to release the liquid discharging member from the operating member and permit its return to its nonoperating position.
5. A liquid dispensing pump comprising a reciprocatory operating member, a reciprocatory liquid discharging member, said members correlated to permit the operating member to have movement toward the liquid-discharging member preparatory to each liquid-dispensing operation, means to automatically connect the operating member to the liquid-dispensing member at. the end of said preparatory movement, means to move said members unitarily to thereby discharge a predetermined quantity of liquid when they have been thus connected, and means to disconnect the members from each other at the end of the said discharge movement to thereby free the discharging member for its return to its former posltion.
6. A liquid dispensing pump comprising a reciprocatory handle and a stem, a reciprocatory liquid-discharging piston normally operatively disconnected from said stem,
said stem and piston being relatively movable when so disconnected, co-acting elements respectively connected to said stem and piston and correlated to be inter-engaged by pressure applied to the handle and when so' inter-engaged to connect the stem and piston together for unitary movement, resilient means placed under tension in movement of the stem relatively to the piston, and operative when pressure is released to move the stem and piston unitarily in liquid-disehar ing direction, and means acting with re ationto said elements to disconnect them from each other at the end of I the discharging movement, to thereby permit the piston to return to its former osition when a predetermined quantity 0 liquid has been discharged.
7. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an operating member, a liquid-discharging member, a latch movable with one of said members, an element connected to the other member, said latch and element forming complementary parts of a means to secure the operating member and liquid-discharging member releasabl together, and being normally disengaged irom each other, means to cause them automatically to inter-engage when one member has been moved a predetermined distance toward the other member, resilient means placed under tension in said movement when the two members have been connected to each other to move the operating and liquid discharging members unitarily for the dischargm operation, and
means operative at the en of the discharging operation to release the latch from its complementary element to thereby automatically free the liquid-discharging element for its return to its former'position.
8. A liquid dispensing pump comprising. a reciprocatory operating member and a reciprocatory liquid-discharging member, mounted to have relative movement in one direction the operating member toward the liquid-dischargin member and the liquiddischarging mem er away from the operatmg member, in combination with a latchon 'ng element carried by one of said mem ers and havin a shoulder and a bev- I eled face, a pivote latch carried by the other member and having at one end a shoulder and a correspondingly beveled face, resilient means operating with relation to the latch to cause 1t to inter-engage with the ersed by the latch in the latter movement V and operative upon said latch to .free the liquid-discharging member from the operating member to permit said liquid-discharging. member to return to its former position.
9. A liquid dispensing pump comprising a reeiproeatory operating member and a reciprocatory liquid-discharging member, movable umtaril in one direction to discharge the liquid and having relative nondischarging movements, the non-discharglng movement of the operating member being toward the liquid-discharging member and the non-discharging movement of the liquid-discharging member being away from the operating member, connecting elements arranged to inter-engage and thereby connect the operating member and liquid-discharging member together for unitary movement when the operating member has been moved a predetermined distance toward the liquid-discharging member, resilient means placed under tension in said movement of the operating member and operative to move both members unitarily in the reverse direction, means to release the connecting elements from each other when said members have moved unitarily a predetermined distance, to thereb free the liquid-dischar 'ng member from t e operating member an resilient means to force the return of the liquiddischarging member to its former position when it has been thus released.
10. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an operating member and a liquid-disharging member, movable unitarily in one direction and relatively'to each other in the other direction elements connected to the members, respectively, and co-operating to connect them to each other for their unitary movement, said elements having shoulders nit when thus connected to each other and a releasing element having a beveled face and operating with relation to the pivoted element to free the member to which said pivoted element is connected from its connection with the other member at a predetermined place in the travel of the members.
11. A liquid dispensing pum compris ng an operatin member, a liqui discharging 10 'member, a pivoted element carried by one of late the quantity of he said members, a complementary element carried by the other member and co-operating therewith to connect the members together for unitary movement when one of the members has been moved a predetermined distance relatively to the other, a releasin element operative wit relation to the pivoted element to disconnect it from said complementary element when the members have unitarily moved a predetermined distance, and a spring operatively related to the pivoted element and to the member to which the pivoted element is connected to exert tension on said pivoted element to hold it in position for operation by said complementary element and releasing element and to exert tension on the liquid-discharging member to cause the latter to return to its non-working position when it has been disconnected from the operating member.
12. A liquid dispensing pump-comprising relatively movable operating and liquid-discharging members, a casing and means including relatively adjustable elements in said casing, operative automatically to connect said members to each other for unitary movement and to disconnect them from each other at variably regulatable places in the movement of the members to thereby reguuid discharged at each operation of the pump.

A liquid dispensing pump comprising an operating member and a liquid-discharging member normally free from operative connection with, and having non-liquid discharging movement relatively to, each other; together with normally disconnected elements respectively connected to said members and arranged to be brought into engagement by movement of the operating member relatively to the liquid-discharging member and operative when so engaged to connect said members to each other for unitary liquid-discharging movement; and with an adjustable means operative at the end of the liquid-discharging movement to free said elements from each other and by its adjustment to regulate the quantity of liquid discharged at each operation of the pump.
14;. A liquid dispensing pump comprising a reciprocatory operating member, a reciprocatory liquid-discharging member, said members correlated to permit the operating member to have movement toward the liquiddischarging member preparatory to each liquid dispensing operation, means to automatically connect the operating member and the liquid-discharging member to each other at the end of said preparatory 'movement,
means to move said members unitarily when I and the liquid-discharging member mounted to have movement away from the operating momber, in combination with a latch-engaging element carried by the operating member and having a shoulder and a beveled face, a pivoted latch carried by the discharging member and having at one end a shoulder and a correspondingly beveled face, said latch-engaging element and latch being arranged to be inter-engaged by movement of the operating member toward the liquiddischarging member, means to move the operating member and liquid-discharging member to effect the discharge of liquid when said members have been thus interengaged and a releasing element having a beveled face and mounted in the path traversed by the beveled Face of the latch in the latter movement and operative upon said face to tree the liquid-discharging member from the operating member, said releasing element being adjustable to thereby variably regulate the quantity of liquid dispensed at each operation of the pump.
16, A. liquid dispensing pump comprising a cover plate, a piston chamber spaced from the cover plate, a piston guide attached to the wall of the piston chamber presentcd toward the cover plate, a casing means extending from said guide to the cover plate, a piston reciprocatorily mounted in the piston chamber and having its stem operatively re lated to said guide, a resiliently mounted opin, a casing means between the piston chamber and cover plate, and means-to releasably' connect the operating member tothe piston, mounted in said casing means.
18. A liquid dispensing pump comprising a cover plate, a sleeve extending through an lopening therein, an operating member reciprocatorily mounted within the sleeve and projecting therefrom, a spring mounted in the sleeve and tending to hold the operating member in its outer position, a piston chamber spaced from the cover plate, a piston guide attached to the wall of the piston chamber presented toward the cover plate, a piston mounted in 'the piston chamber and having its stem operatively related to said guide, a releasable connection between the operating member and piston stem, and a casing means extending from the cover plate to the piston guide and encasing said releasable connection.

A liquid dispensing pump comprising an endwise movable piston, operating member and piston, normally free from operative connection with eachother and each movable relatively to the other; together with elements relatively arran ed to connect said operating member an piston togather for unitary movement and to disconnect them from each other,for relative movement, at predetermined places in the gndwise movements of the operating mem- 20. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an endwise movable operating member and a piston, normally free from operative connection with each other and each having movement relatively to the other; together with connecting elements relatively arranged to interengage at the end of an endwise movement of the operating memher to thereby connect the latter and the piston together for unitary movement and with a means operative upon one of said elements to disconnect said member from the piston and thereby permit the latter to return to its original position.

A liquid dispensing pump comprising a piston and an operatin means therefor, said operating means inc uding a member movable endwise in o posite directions and normally disconnecte from the piston, and said piston and member each being movable relatively to the other; the pump also including a co-operating head and latch, one of which is carried by the piston and the other by the endwise movable member, said head and latch co-operating to interengage and thereby connect the piston and said member together at the end of an endwise movement of the member in one direction, and means operatively related to the latch to free it from said head and thereby permit the piston to return to-its original position at the end of the movement of said member in the other direction..

A liquid dispensing pumpcQmprising' a reciprocatory .piston and an operating means, the latter including a membr having endwise movement toward the piston .and said piston having movement away from the operatin member, co-operating elements respective y carried by said iston and member and operatively engagea le to connect the piston and member for unitary movement at the end of the movement of the member towardthe piston, means to impart said unitary movement to the piston and member, means through which a predetermined charge of liquid is discharged during said unitary movement of the piston and member, and an element to disengage the said co-operating elements from each other when the predetermined quantity of liquid has been discharged, to thereby free the piston from said 0 crating member and permit movement of ta piston away from the operating member.

A liquid dispensing ump compris ing an operatingmeans mending an endwise movable member, a liquid discharg ing member, means operatlng automatical y to connect said members to each other for unitary movement, a casing and adjustable means mounted in said casing and operative with relation to the connecting means to disconnect said members from each other automatically and to variably regulate the quantity of liquid discharged at each operation of the pum 24. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an endwise movable operating member having a. guiding projection extending longitudinally from the inner end thereof, a piston having a stem provided with an opening to be traversed bysaid guiding projection, said piston and operating member being normally free from operative connection with each other and each movable relatively to the other together with elements relatively arranged to connect said operating member and piston together for unitary movement and to disconnect them from each other for relative movement, at predetermined places in the endwise movements of the operating member.
25. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an endwise movable operating member and a piston normally free from operative connection with each other and each having movement relatively to the other; together with connecting elements relatively arranged to interengage at the end of an endwise movement of the operating member to thereby connect the latter and the piston together for unitary movement, an adjustable element operative upon one of said connecting elements to disengage the operating member from the piston at a predetermined place in the travel of said member and piston and a means which encases said adjustable element and prevents convenient access thereto.
26. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an endwise movable piston operating member, a piston, a tensioned pivoted latch and an element to co-act with said latch, the latch and the said co-acting element respectively carried by the piston and piston operating member and being normally spaced from each other and automatically engageable by movement of the piston operating member relatively to the piston and when so engaged operating to connect the piston and its operating member together for unitary movement, and a means in the path of the said movement to automatically disengage the latch from its said co-acting element, the tensioning means of the latch operating to hold the latter yieldably in position to engage said element and means.
27. In a pump having a liquid dispensing piston, the combination with said piston of an operating mechanism therefor, including a handle member and a piston operating member each having endwise movement relatively to the other, together with an element carried by one of said members to releasably engage it with the other, to thereby transmit endwise movement from one member to the other, and with a means in the path of 'movement of said element with both members and acting thereon to release said members to thereby permit relative movemegt thereof.
28. A liquid dispensing pump comprising a piston chamber, a piston reciprocatorily mounted in said chamber and a piston operating mechanism, including two separately tensioned members movable relatively to each other and to the piston, complementary elements forming a first connecting means, to connect said members releasably to each other for unitary movement in one direction, means including complementary elements forming a second connecting means, to connect one of said members and the piston with each other for unitary movement in one direction, means operative with relation to the elements of the first connecting means to operatively disengage the same substantially simultaneously with the engagement of the elements of the second connecting means with each other, and means operative with relation to the elements of the second connecting means to operatively disengage the same at a predetermined place in. the unitary movement of the latter member and thereby permit the piston to move relatively to said member.
29. In a liquid dispensing pump, a piston and its operating mechanism, said operating mechanism including a handle member and a member intermediate the handle member and piston, each having movement relatively to the other and to the piston, a first fastening means having complementary elements reieasably engaged with each other at a predetermined place in the movement of the handle member toward the .intermediate member and when so engaged transmitting movement of the handle member to said intermediate member in a direction toward the piston, a second fastening means including complementary elements one of which is carried by said intermediate member and the other by the piston, and which elements are engageable with each other at a predetermined place in the movement of said intermediate member toward the piston, means acting with relation to the first fastening means to free the handle member from the intermediate member when the latter member has been connected to the piston, means to restore the handle member to its original position when it has been thus freed, means to move the intermediate member and piston unitarily when they have been connected to each other and the handle member has been freed, and means acting with relation to the second fastening means to free the piston from said intermediate member and permit it to return to its former position at a predetermined place in the movement of said piston with the intermediate member.
30. In a pump having a liquid dispensing piston, the combination with said piston of an operating mechanism therefor, including a handle member and a piston operating member each having endwise movement relatively to the other, together with an element carried by one of said members to releasably engage it with the other, to thereby transmit endwise movement from one member to the other, and with a means in the path of movement of said element with both members and acting thereon to release said members to thereby permit relative movement thereof, and together also with means to connect the piston operating member with the piston when the handle member has been released from the piston operating member and to release said piston from the operating member at a predetermined place in the travel of the piston and said member.
31. A liquid dispensing pump comprismg, m combination, a handle member, a piston, an endwise movable piston operating member movable relatively to the handle member andgiiston, means to releasably connect the hen e member to the piston operatmg member for unitary movement of said members toward the piston, complementary elements relatively disposed to be broughtinto interengaging relation by endwise movement of the piston operating member toward the piston, means to release the handle member from the piston operating member when said complementary elements of the piston and piston operating member have been interengaged, in ans to move the piston operating member and piston unitarily and relatively to the handle member when said complementary elements have been interengaged and the handle member has been released from the piston operating member, and means to release the piston operating member from the piston at a predetermined place in their unitary movement, the piston when thus released being free to return to its original position.
32. A liquid dispensing pump comprising an endwise movable and tensioned handle member, a reciprocator piston, a tensioned piston operating mem er having endwise movement in one direction relatively to the piston and in the opposite direction relatively to the handle member, a pivoted element carried by the handle member and releasably engageable with the pistonoperating member and through which pressure applied to the handle member moves the piston operating member toward the piston, complementary elements relatively disposed to interengage and thereby secure the piston operating member and piston together at the end of the said movement of the piston operating member toward the piston, means to release the pivoted elementof the handle member from the piston operating member when the piston has been fastened to the piston operating member, means to move the piston operating member and piston unitarily and relatively to the handle member when the piston operating member has been attached to the piston and released from the handle member, and means operative with relation to said complementary elements to release the piston from the piston operating member at a' predetermined place in their unitary movement, the piston when thus released being free to return to its original position.
33. Ina liquid dispensing pump, the combination with the piston, of an operating means therefor, including a piston operating member having endwise movement in one direction relatively to the piston and in the opposite direction with said piston, co-acting elements engageable with each other by endwise movement of said operating member relatively to the piston to thereb secure said piston and member together or their unitary movement, means operative with relation to said co-acting elements to free the piston from the piston operating member at a predetermined place in the path of unitary movement of the piston and operating memher, and endwise movable handle member movable relatively to the piston operating member, a dog carried by one of said members and releasably engageable with the other, and means acting upon said dog at a predetermined place in the travel of the latter to thereby free thev handle member and piston operating member from each said piston of an operating means therefor including an operating member, elements to attach the operating member to the piston and to release it therefrom at predetermined places in the travel of said member and piston, a casing member, an endwise movable tensioned handle member extending into said casing member and movable relatively to the piston operating member and piston, and means correlated Withthe handle member, piston operating member, piston and said attaching elements to transmit movement between the handle member and the piston operating member for that stage in the movement of the parts during which the piston operating member is free from the piston and to efiect a release of the handle member from the piston operating member for that stage in the operation of the parts when the piston member is attached to the piston.
. 35. In a liquid dispensing pump having a reciprocatory piston, the combination with said piston of an operating means therefor including an operating member, elements to attach the operating member to the piston and to release it therefrom at predetermined places in the travel of said member and piston, a casing member, an endwise movable tensioned handle member extending into said casing member and movable relatively to the piston operating member and piston, and a dog carried by the handle member and releasably engageable With the piston operating member, and means to disengage the dog from the piston operating member when the piston operating member has been attached to the piston.
36. In a liquid dispensing pump having a reciprocatory piston, the combination with said piston of an operating means therefor including an operating member, relatively adjustable elements to attach the operating member to the piston and to release it therefrom at variably predetermined places in the travel of said member and piston, a casing member, an endwise movable tensioned handle member extending into said casing member and movable relatively to the piston operating member and piston, and a dog carried by the handle member and releasably engageable with the piston operating member, and adjustable means to disengage the dog from the piston operating member when the piston operating member has been attached to the piston.
37 In a pump for dispensing measured charges of liquid, the combination of a relatively movable piston, piston operating member and handle member; releasable means to connect the handle member and piston operating'member together for unitary movement of said members relatively to the piston; means acting with relation to said releasable means to disconnect the handle member and piston operating memher at a predetermined place in their unitary movement; releasable means to connect the piston operating member and piston together for unitary movement when the handle member has been disconnected from the piston operating member; and means to disconnect the piston from the piston operating member at a predetermined place in their unitary movement.
38. In a pump for dispensing measured charges of li uid, the combination of a relatively mova le piston, piston operating member and handle member; releasable means to connect the handle member and piston operating member together for unitary movement of said members relatively to the piston; releasable means to connect the piston o crating member and the piston together or unitary movement relatively to the piston; and adjustable disconnecting means respectively acting with relation to said releasable means and positioned relativel thereto to disconnect the handle member rom the piston operating member when the latter has been connected to the piston and to disconnect the piston from the piston operating member at a predetermined place in the unitary movement of the piston and piston operating member, the adjustment of said disconnecting means variably predetermining the quantity of liquid dispensed at each operation of the pump.
39. In a pump for dispensing measured charges of liquid, the combination of a relatively movable piston, piston operating member and handle member; releasable means to connect the handle member and piston operating member together for unitary movement of said members relatively to the piston; releasable means to connect the piston operating member and the piston together for unitary movement relatively to the piston; adjustable disconnecting means respectively acting with relation to said releasable means and positioned relatively thereto. to disconnect the handle member 1,7eaeocy from the piston operating member when the latter has been connected to the piston and to disconnect the piston from the piston operating member at a predetermined place in the unitary movement of the piston and piston operating member, the adjustment of said disconnecting means variably predetermining the quantit of liquid'dispensed.
at each operation of t e pump; and means encasing the releasable means and adjustable means to protect the same against convenient unauthorized access thereto.
40. In a pump for dispensing measured charges of liquid, the combination of a relatively movable piston, tensioned operating member and tensioned handle member; releasable means to connect the handle member and piston operating member together for unitary movement of said members relatively to the piston; casing means in which the handle member and the said releasable means are operated; a closure for one end of said casing means, having a member operative with relation tosaid releasable;
means to disconnect the handle member from the piston 0 erating member; a casing member within t e first mentioned casing member and within which the tensioning means of the piston operating member is mounted; releasable means to connect the piston operating member and piston together for unitary movement when the handle member has been disconnected from the piston operating member; means attached to the member which encases the tensioning means of the piston operating member and positioned to operate with relation to the last mentioned releasable means to disconnect the piston operating member from the piston at a predetermined place in theunitary movement of said member and piston; a chamber in which the head of the piston operates; a guide through which the stem of the piston operates; and a casing member extending from said closure of the first mentioned casing member to the guide and encasing the means by which the piston operating member and piston are releasably connected with and released from each other.
