GAS BOMB ADAPTED T0 BE DSCHA-RGED FROTvI ARCRAFT.
Original application led July 29, 1927, Serial No. 209,596.
Divided and this application led May 9, 1928.
Serial No. 276,397.
Our invention relates to a. novel gas bomb adapted for discharge from aircraft and which will function in the novel manner hereinafter described.
lVe attain the objects of our invention by the means disclosed in the accomganying` drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of tion;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through saine on line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
3 is an end eleva-tion of the bomb; and
Fig. 4 is a section on line l--l of Fig. 2.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to Figs. 2 and l, we provide the main torpedo 18. lV e also provide a poison gas chamber 23 in Contact with which isa percussion member 20. In contact with this` member 2O is a tiring pin 21 car 'ied by the slidable firing` bolt 16, which bolt carries a bolt head 25 preferably of the shape shown in Fig. 2 and which will function to operate the device, discharge the bomb, and release the gas if the device is dropped from aircraftonto the ground. life also provide a detachable cap 17 near the end of the poison gas chamber to permit of filling the bomb with The end cap or cover 22 of the main torpedo 13 is held in place by loch bar 19 which in turn is releasably engaged by hthe spring hooks 1S, the ends of which are fastened to the outer walls of the main torpedo by any suitable means, such as the rivets 2G.
The device may be operated either as a bomb to be destroyed by contact of the head of the ring bolt with any object when the bomb is dropped from aircraft or it may be our invenutilized as a time bomb to be discharged at a predetermined time after being disposed in a desired location, depending on the length of time the t-ime device 15 requires to function. n
lt is one of the purposes of our invention to provide a type of bomb which, when dis 1. As a new article of manufacture for use in a device of the class described, aV bomb comprising a gas chamber having` means to permit fillingv the bomb with gas, a main explosive torpedo affixed to the gas chamber, a percussion member supported in lixed position to the gas chamber, a firing pin andv bolt positioned to lire the percussion member such as would result from the bomb fallto the ground from aircraft, a detachably mounted head releasably hooked in place on tl emain torpedo chamber.
2. is a new article of i anufacture for use in a device of the class described, a bomb comprising a gas chamber having means to permit of filling the bomb with gas, a main explosive torpedo afxed to the gas chamber, a percussion member supported in xed position to the gas chamber, a tiring,r pin and bolt positioned to fire the percussion ymember such as would result from the bomb falling to the ground from aircraft, and anend cap releasably hooked in place on the main torpedo chamber.
3. As a new article of manufacture for use in a device of the class described, a bomb comprising a gas chamber having` means to permit of filling' the bomb with gas, said chamber being of substantially frustro-conical shape, a main explosive torpedo aliixed to the gas chamber, a percussion member supported in fixed position to the gas chamber, a tiring pin and bolt positioned to fire the percussion member such as would result from the bomb falling to the ground from aircraft, an end cap releasably hooked in place on the main torpedo chamber, and a time fuse operatively connected with the bomb, whereby to permit of utilizing the device either as a time bomb or otherwise.
