FLYING-130MB.
Application led September 26,` 1917.
Z 10 all who/m, t may Concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE KUPEC and JOHN SLosAn, subjects of the King of Hungary, residing at New Salem, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flying-Bombs7 of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in flying bombs.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a bomb especially adapted to be dropped from aeroplanes and arranged with a plurality of means for insuring the exploding thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a bomb adapted for explosion upon striking an object and being arranged for maintaining an upright position during its travel through the air, a plurality of exlosion chambers being arranged adapted or simultaneous operation.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof and Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse sectional view taken upon line III-III of Fig. 1.
The device herein illustrated may be projected in any desired manner such as by dropping from an aeroplane and broadly consists of a main bomb or exploding member 10 of inverted conical form arranged at the bottom of the device and having auxiliary explosive members 11 mounted in cruciform arrangement thereon by being attached to a post 12 centrally mounted upon the top or base side of the explosive member 13.
The base member 10 has a removable lower end 14 at the apex thereof for positioning a plug 15 within the base member arranged with a fire pin 16 downwardly projecting through the pointed end of the cap. A partition is arranged within the member 10 having a central opening 17 through which the gun cotton, dynamite or other explosive material 18 is positioned within the explosion chamber 19 of said member 10.
A percussion cap 2O is arranged adjacent the perforation 17 adapted to he engaged by the pointed inner end 21 of the Specification `of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2G, 1918.
Serial No. 193,238.
plug 15 when the pin 16 is violently contacted when the device strikes an object, it being noted that a spring 22 is arranged between the plug 15 and the partition 16 for normally maintaining the point 21 out of contact with the cap 20.
The auxiliary explosion members 11 are in the form of casings being removable top closures 23 for filling said members with gun cotton or other explosive material 24. Firing rods 25 are obliquely positioned through the base member 10 having their lower ends engaging a shoulder 26 of the plug 15 while the upper end portions of the rods 25 pass through stuffing box 27 arranged in the bottoms of the casings 11 and are preferably arranged with springs 28 for normally maintaining the pointed upper free end 29 of the said rods spaced from percussion or ignition caps 30 carried within perforated lugs 31 within the explosive contents 2i of said auxiliary explosive members. Y
The operation of the device will be apparent from this description thereof as the striking of the pin 16 upon any object will force the plug 15 inwardly for exploding the cap 17 and igniting the base member 10 for exploding its contents 18 while such movement of the plug will simultaneously elevate the rods 25 forcing the points 29 of the rods in Contact with the caps 30 and exploding the caps for firing the contents 241 of the auxiliary explosive members 11. In this manner7 the explosion of the bomb is insured as one or more of the explosive chambers will be fired upon dropping the device so that the firing pin 16 comes in violent contact with some object while the form of the device is adapted to maintain the base member 10 at the bottom thereof during the movement of the device through the air while the radially projecting members 11 assist in maintaining a travel thereof in a uniform direction.
`What we claim as new is A bomb comprising a hollow inverted conical base member, a post upon said member, radially projecting casings carried by the said post.y explosive material within the said casings and base, ignition caps for the explosive material of said casings and base member, a shiftable plug at the apex of said base member, a downwardly projecting liring pin carried by said plug extending out- Wardly of the base member, a point upon said plug adapted for engaging the cap carried by the base member, firing rods having thenlower ends `vengzrxgng the said plug l". and their upper ends pointed and normally arranged spaced fromy the caps of said ex@y plosion casngs whereby all of the said caps tures.
