against movement, either through manipulation of the inside handle, or through sep-.
arate inside locking means, so that by exerting a suflicient force upon the locked outsidehandle the locking means could be forced or broken, and the latch bolt retracted to open the door. It is proposed, in the present embodiment of the invention, to ren der operation of the outside handle ineffective to operate the bolt, without locking it against turning, however, and which cannot be forced to effect retraction of the bolt.
A further object is to provide a latch in which the outside handle is rendered ineffective through a movement of the inside -handle in reverse direction to the normal retracting movement, so that in order to restore the operative relation of the inside handle, it is only necessary to move the mside handle in its normal retracting direction.
' Another object is to provide a latch construction in which the inside handle mechanism is adapted to operate directly with the bolt independently of the outside retracting means, while the outside handle mechanism operates upon the bolt through an intermediate member.
It is particularly proposed, in the present embodiment, to provide a latch including a latch bolt and a retracting member engaged with the outside handle mechanism and the bolt, and which is adapted to be operatively The latch is especially adapted for i an embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, the embodiment of the invention shown therein comprises-a sheet metal frame or plate 10 having a face flange 11 bent therefrom at one end, within which a rectangular opening 12 is provided, a lip or flange portion 13 of the metal cut from said opening being bent in parallel spaced relation to the plate 10 to form a bearing for the latch bolt. The latch bolt 14 is slidably engaged at its relatively thick nose portion 15 in the opening 12, and near its inner end is provided with a slot 16 engaged with a fixed guide roller 17 secured to the plate 10, a coil spring 18 being engaged with the inner end of said bolt and normally pressing it to its projected position,
The bolt is retained against displacement by means of a flat cover 19, flanged at its upper and lower edges, as at 20, and se cured to the plate 10 by lugs 21 inserted through slots 22 in the plate 10 and bent over upon the outer surface of said plate.
The main portion of the bolt within the casing may preferably be formed of flat sheet metal, while the nose portion may be a "forging riveted thereto.
At the rearward end of the bolt there is 100 .39 having a stud at its end projected upprovided an upwardly projecting vertical extension 23 engaged by the inner handle roll-back arm 24, the hub 25 of said rollback having bearing in apertures formed in the base and coverplates 10 and 19.
The outside handle roll-back 26 has its hub 27 rotatably engaged in apertures in the plates 10 and 19 adjacent the face flange 11, and is adapted to actuate the bolt through an intermediate slide member 32 slida-bly engaged with the bolt, and including a bridging portion 33 extending transversely across the bolt and flanged, as at 34 and 35, to engage the upper and lower edges of the bolt, and thereby retain the slide member in sliding relation with the bolt. A spring 36 engaging the upper portion of the slide member normally presses it forwardly against the outside handle roll-back, so that the latter is retained in its normal relatlon during operation of the inside handle, or retraction of the bolt through pressure applied at its nose end.
Slots 37 and 38 in the cover plate 19 permit retracting movement of the bolt nose and the slide member, the latter having its bolt bridging portion 33 engaged in said slot 38. Y
In the normal operative relation the slide member is connected to the bolt member, so that the latter is retracted through retraction movement of the slide member, imparted thereto by the outside handle, but in the inoperative relation, wherein operation of the outside handle is rendered ineffective to retract the bolt through manipulation of the outside handle, the slide member is adapted to be disconnected from 'the latch bolt.
To this end, the inside handle roll-back is provided with a radially projecting arm wardly through an arcuate slot 41- in the cover plate 19, and pivotally connected to the upper end of a rod 42, the lower end of this rod being slidably engaged ina turnblock 43 swivelly mounted at the end of a lever 44 pivotally disposed in a fan-shaped opening 45 provided in the latch bolt. The turn-block 43 is disposed in a slot in the bridge portion 33 of the slide member, including a relatively wide rearward portion 46, a relatively narrow forward portion 47 in continuation of the upper edge of said rearward portion, and an abutment wall 48 between the lower edges of said portions 46 and 47. The rod is provided at its lower end with ahead 49, against which the block 43 bears, and between said block and a collar 50 there is provided a helical spring 51, which normally presses the block against said head, and permits sliding movement of the rod through the block during bolt retracting movement of the inside handle roll-I back. A leaf-spring 52 secured to the casing and engaging the periphery of the inner handle roll-back is adapted to engage the respective notches 53 and 54 to yieldably retain the inside roll-back in its normal position (Fig. 1), and in its reversely moved position in which actuation of the outside handle is rendered ineflective (Fig. 4).
The operation is as follows As shown in Fig. 1, in which the parts are in their normal operative relation, the latch bolt isretracted from the inside by the inside handle, the roll-back 24being rotated in counter-clockwise direction and bearing directly upon the extension 23 of the bolt, the rod 42 moving downwardly through the block 43, as shown in dotted lines. It is retracted from the outside by the outside handle, the roll-back 26 being rotated in clockwise direction, and through movement of the slide member retracting the bolt, the slide member being operatively connected to the bolt through engagement of the abutment wall 48 with the turn-block 43 and engagement of the latter with the bolt.
In order to render operation of the outside handle inelfective to retractthe bolt, "the inside handle is moved through a partial rotation, in opposite direction to its normal retracting movement (Fig. 4), swinging the lever 44 upwardly and bringing the turnblock 43 out of engagement with the abutment wall 48 of the slide member and into register with the narrow slot portion 47. Upon actuation of the outside handle in this relation, the slide member will move in retracting direction, as shown in full lilies, but will not retract the bolt.
The normal operative relation of the outside handle is restored upon moving the inside handle in retracting direction, the initial movement reengaging the turn-block 43 with the abutment wall 48, and the continued -move1nent causing retraction of the bolt.
Under all conditions the latch boltis free to be retracted independently of the handles, that is, by pressure directly. applied at its nose, as in slamming the door closed.
I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of the invention, but it will be obvious that changes may be made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-:
1. In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, a retracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt and adapted to have longitudinal sliding movement with the bolt, means normally connecting said member to the bolt, and means associated with said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation of the latter in a nonbolt-retracting direction to disconnect said retracting member from operative relation with the bolt.

In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, a retracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt, and having sliding engagement longitudinally with said bolt, means normally connecting said member to the bolt whereby retracting movement of said member is adapted to retract the bolt and whereby said bolt is adapted to have retracting movement independently of said member through retractive pressure applied directly thereon, and means associated with said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation of the latter in a non-bolt-retracting direction to disconnect said retracting member from operative relation with the olt.
7 In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, a retracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt and having a slot disposed in relation to the bolt, a movable connecting member carried by the bolt and extending into said slot, said slot including a portion adapted in one position of said connecting member to operatively connect said bolt and said retracting member, and means between said connecting member and said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation of the latter in a non-bolt-retracting direction to move said connecting member to disconnect said bolt and retract ing member from operative relation with each other.

In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, a retracting member interposedbetween said outside retracting means and said bolt and having a slot disposed in relation to said bolt and including a relatively narrow longitudinal portion, a relatively wide longitudinal portion, and a transverse abutment wall portion, a transversely movable connecting member carried adapted in one position to engage said abutment wall portion to operatively connect said bolt and said retracting member,'and means between saidconnecting member and said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation of the latter in a non-boltretracting direction to move said connecting member to disengage it from said abutment wall whereby said retracting member is adapted to have movement independently of the bolt.
