The present invention relates to an im proved automobile door latch, and has for an object to provide a latch of this character, having both an inside and an outside operating handle, and in which the outside handle may be rendered ineffective in its operation by means controlled from the inside. The latch is especially adapted for use upon doors of closed cars, being applied to all but one of the doors, and which latter is adapted to be locked from the outside.
Heretofore it has been' the practice to lock the outside handle, or the latch bolt, against movement, either through manipulation of the inside handle, or through separate inside locking means, so that by exerting a suicient force upon the locked outside handle the locking means could be forced or broken, andthe latch bolt retracted to open the door. llt is proposed, in the present embodiment of the invention, to render operation `lof the outside handle ineffective to operate the bolt, without locking it against turning, however, and which cannot be forced to effect retraction of the bolt. A further object is to provide a latch in which the outside handle is rendered ineffective through a movement of the inside y mediate member.

Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, the embodiment of the invention shown therein comprises a sheet metal frame or base plate 10, having a face flange 11 bent therefrom at one end, within which a rectangular open ing 12 is provided, a lip flange portion 13 of the metal cut from said opening being bent inwardly in parallel spaced relation to .the'plate 10 to form a bearing for the latch bolt. The latch bolt 14 is slidably engaged at its relatively thick nose portion 15 in the opening 12, and near its inner end is provided with a slot 16 engaged with a fixed guide roller 17 secured to the plate 10, a coil spring 18l engaged with the inner end of said bolt normally pressing it to its projected position. rllhe bolt is retained against displacement by means of a flat cover plate 19, flanged at its upper and lower edges, as at 20, and secured to the plate 10Q by lugs 21 inserted through slots 22 in said plate and bent over upon the outer surface thereof.
The main part of the bolt within the casing may preferablybe formed of flat sheet metal, while the n'ose portion may be a forging riveted thereto.
At the rearward end of the bolt there 1s provided an upwardly projecting vertical extension 23 having a longitudinal slot 24 extending rearwardly from the forward ver tical` edge thereof, and in upwardly spaced relation to the upper edge of the bolt. The vertical edge portion of the extension 23 above the slot 24 is engaged by the inner vhandle roll-back 25, the hub 26 of which has bearing in apertures formed in the base and cover plates 10 and 19.
The inner handle roll-back. is adapted through rotation in one direction (counterclockwise) to retract the latch boltin the usual manner,andj by partial rotationl in opposed direction, and as will presently more vfully appear, to render operation of the outside handle mechanism ineffectual.
The outside handlel roll-back 27 has its hub 28 rotatably engaged in apertures in the plates 10 and .19 adjacent the face lange 11,. and is adapted to actuate the bolt through an intermediate slide and rocking retracting member 29, including` a for- 2wardly e rojecting portion 3() engaged with the rollack, an upper arm portion 3 1 eX- tending above the inside handle roll-back,
and a lower arm portion 32 normally enf'gaging' the-upper surface of the bolt adjacent the extension 23,. The member 29 is provided with a longitudinal slot 33, sub-` stantially parallel with the bolt in the normal operativeposition of said member, and in ich is engaged a fixed guide stud 34 secur d to the casing.' vThe memberj 29 is connected to the rollfback -27 by means of a link 35 having relatively 'loose connection at one end; and a spring y36 coiled about the stud 34, having one end engaged by a lug 37 struck lup from the casingand its `other end engaged with astud 38 provided at thelower forward portion of said member, yieldingly4 presses the member and the outsidehandle rollback into their normal positions and tends to rotate said member in clockwise direction 4about the stud 34.
The inside handle roll-back is provided with a camming portion 39, normally out .of contact with the upper arm 31 of the lretracting member, 29, and' adapted upon partial rotation of the roll-back in reverse or clockwise direction to rock the -member 29 upwardly, bringing the arm 32 into linel .rotated in counter-clockwise direction and leo bearing directly upon the extension 23 of the bolt. It is retracted from the outside by the outside handle, the roll-back 27 being rotated in clockwise direction, and, through movement of the intermediate Vmember 29, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, retracting the bolt.
In order to render operation of lthe outside handle ineffective to retract the bolt, the inside handle is moved through a partial rotation, in opposed direction to its normal retracting movement (Fig. 2) bringing the cam portion 39 into engagement with the upper arm 31 of the meinber- 29, rocking the latter about the stud 34 to a point where the lower arm 32 is in line with the slot 24 of the latch extension 23. Upon .actuation of the outside handle in `this relation, the member 29 is shifted inwardly, as shown in dotted lines, but is ineffectual to retract the latch bolt, the arm 32 moving freely within the slot 24.
The normal operative relation of the ontside handle is restored upon moving the inside handle in retracting direction, the initial movement disengaging the cam portion 39 from the arm 31 and causing the arm 32 to reengage the bolt below the slot 24, and the continued movement causing retraction of the bolt.
Under all conditions the latch boltis free to be retracted independently of the handles, that is, by pressure directlyapplied at its nose end, as in slamming the door closed.
In Figs. 3 to 5 I have illustrated a modified form of the invention, in which the member 29 is provided with a pivot stud 50 projecting at each side, and which slidably and pivotally engages horizontal slots 51 and 52 provided in the plates 10 and 19, a helical spring 53 being tied between the lower forward corner of said member 29 and a lug 54 struck up from the casing, the action of this spring being substantially the same as the spring 36 of the first form to yieldingly move the member 29 and the outside roll back into their normal positions and to rotate said member 29 in clockwise direction. In this embodiment the sliding movement of the member 29, in both the operative relation asshown in Fig. 3 and in the inoperative relationas shown in Fig. 5, is in a direction palrallel to the direction of movement of the vI have illustrated. and described preferred and satisfactory embodiments of the invention, but it will be obvious that changes may be made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, a retracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt, said inside retracting means adapted to retract said bolt independently of said member and means assoclated with said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation of the latter in a non-bolt-retracting direction to remove said retracting member from operative relation with the bolt.
2. In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting for said bolt including inside and outside 'tid manually operable means, a retracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt, said inside retracting means adapted to retract said bolt independently of said member, and means carried by said inside rectracting means engagingdirectly with said retracting member and adapted upon manipulation of said inside retracting means in a non-bolt-retracting direction to remove said retracting member from operative relation with the bolt.
d. In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, a retracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt, 'said inside retracting means engaging direetlywith the bolt and adapted to retract the same independently of said member and including a portion adapted to engage directly with said retracting member, whereby movement of said inside retracting means in one direction is adapted to retract the bolt and in the other direction is adapted to remove said retracting member from operative relation with said bolt. v
5. In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside vand outside manually operable means, a retracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt, said inside retracting means adapted to retract said bolt independently of said member, said inside retracting means including means operatively related tosaid retracting member, whereby movement of said inside retracting means in one direction is adapted to retract the bolt and in the other direction is adapted to remove said retracting member from operative relation with the bolt.
5. In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outsidev manually operable means, aretracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt and including portions adapted to 'respectively engage said bolt and said inside retracting means, said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation in a non-bolt-retracting direction to remove said retraoting'member from operative relation with the bolt and upon manipulation in the otherv direction to retract said bolt independently of said member. v p 4 7. In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, aretracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt and including spaced arms adapted to respectively engage said bolt and said inside retracting means, said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation in a non-bolt-retracting direction to move said retracting member whereby said bolt engaging arm is removed from operative relation with the bolt.
8. In a latch, a latch bolt, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, a slidably and pivotally mounted retracting member interposed between said outside retracting means and said bolt, said member adapted to have sliding movement imparted thereto by said outside retracting means to retract the bolt, and means associated with said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation of the latter in a non-bolt-retracting direction to pivotally move said retracting member out of operative relation with said bolt, whereby sliding movement thereof is ineffective tolI retract the bolt.
9. In a latch, a .latch bolt having a transverse extension, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, said inside retracting means engaging directly with said transverse extension, a retracting member interposed between said outside rectracting means and said bolt, and engaging said transverse ex'- Vtension thereof, and means associated with said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation of the latter in a non-boltretracting direction to remove saidretracting member from operative relation with the bolt and upon manipulation in the other direction to retract said bolt independently of said member.

In a latch, a latch bolt having a transverse extension providedwith a longitudinal slot, retracting means for said bolt including inside and outside manually operable means, a retracting member' lnterposed between said outsideV retracting means and said `bolt and including a portion engaged with said transverse extension, and means associated with said inside retracting means adapted upon manipulation of the latter in a non-bolt-retracting direction to move said bolt engaging portion of the retracting member into line with said slot, whereby movement of said retracting member is ineffective to retract the bolt.
