This invention relates to toys and has special reference to a toy which I preferably term a wheel-racer.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a novel and amusing toy interesting to children, readily operable, having but few parts and capable of being very economically constructed.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.

I11 the embodiment of the invention there is provided a cylindrical track member 10 having outwardly extending peripheral flanges 11 at its ends. In the body of this drum formed a pair of circumferential track grooves 12, the drum with its flanges and grooves being pressed, stamped, rolled or otherwise formed from sheet metal such as tin or the like.
Extending diametrically across the drum are a pair of bars 13 each of which has its ends fixed to opposite points of one of the flanges 11 and centrally of each bar is fixed a disc 14 from which extend downwardly the diverging legs 15 which have their lower ends connected to a base 16.
Supported in the bars and discs centrally of the drum is a shaft 17 having collared ends which serve to keep the shaft from displacement. On this shaft is a sleeve 18 which revolves on the shaft and is provided at one end with a gear 19 wherewith meshes a gear 20 mounted on a driving shaft 21 journalled in a housing 22 attached to one of the discs 14. Two collars 23 and 24 are fixed on this shaft to hold the gear 20 in place and the collar 23 forms a ratchet engaged by the spring pressed pawl 25 carried by the gear 20. The other collar 24 has one end of a spring 26 attached thereto, the other end of the spring being attached to the housing 22. Thus the clock work 1928. Serial No. 279,015.

Extending from the sleeve 18 are arms 28 which carry oppositely positioned and balancing racers in the form of sporty automobile racing cars 29 having their wheels engaging in grooves 12.
It will be noted that the arrangement of the cars is such that they balance each other and thus require but little power to start and keep them in motion. Consequently the spring motor used to drive the cars can be of light and cheap construction without detractin from its efficiency.
Naturally the whole device is to be furnished in bright and attractive colors so as to be suitable for the amusement of children.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a toy of the class described, a c lindrical track member having external y extending peripheral flanges at its ends and provided with interiorly facing circumferential track grooves, cross bars connecting the flanges at each end, supporting means attached to said cross bars to hold the track member with its axis horizontal, a shaft having its ends carried in said cross bars centrally of the track member and provided with spaced collars, a sleeve revoluble on said shaft between said. collars, arms extending in diametrically opposite directions from said sleeve, toy automobiles carried on the free ends of said arms and having wheels engaging in said track grooves, a gear on one end of said sleeve, a fixed housing supported from one of the cross bars, ashaft journalled in said housing and havmg a fixed collar and a fixed ratchet spaced from the collar, a second gear meshing with the first gear and revoluble on the second shaft between the collar and ratchet, a spring pawl on the second gear engaging the ratchet, and means to manually rotate the second shaft, and a spiral spring having one end fixed to the housing and its other end fixed to the collar on the second shaft.
2. In a toy of the class described, a cylindrical track member having externally extending peripheral flanges at its ends and provided with interiorly facing circumferential track grooves, cross bars connecting the flanges at each end, supporting means attached to said cross bars to hold the track member with its axis horizontal, a shaft having its ends carried in said cross bars centrally of the track member and provided with spaced collars, a sleeve revoluble on said shaft between said collars, arms extending in diametrically opposite directions from said sleeve, toy automobiles carried on the free ends of said arms and having wheels engaging in said track grooves, a gear on one end of said sleeve, and a sprin driven clockwork mechanism engaging sai gear to drive the sleeve and cars.
