DRILLING MACHINE Filed Sept. 28, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 I ,1" l ATTORNEY.
Patented Aug. 6, 1929.
1,723,5llll CLAUDE WHIT'IET, OF HAVANA, ILLINOIS.
DRILLING MAClEIINE.
Application filed September 28, lllQ/F.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in. drilling nurchiues and more especially to what is known as the walking beam.
The device con: -;ists iu the novel ieatures of construction, combination and arrangoniont of parts illustrated in the acconuianying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only and are there-- fore not drawn to scale:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, illustrating the a pplication of my invention and showing the position oi the walking beam and flexible tcnsioning device for the drilling cable.
Figure 2 is a milar view, with the walki up; beam and associated parts in drilling position.
Figure. 3 a horizontal section, taken on line 33 of Figure l and Figure .-l is a vertical transverse section, taken on line l--l of Figure 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention and in which drawings like parts are designated by like reference characters throiu hout the several views, my device comprises the Samson post A, consisting of the laterally spaced parallel uprights 1, which provide a support for the walking beam 2, and between the upper ends of which uprights, the walking beam is pivoted by the cross pins or bolts 3. The walking beam 2 is composed oil two corresponding parallel bars or members l held in spaced relation by the end spacing blocks 5 and joined together at corresponding ends by the transverse bolts 6, which also extend through the spacing blocks aforesaid.
A flexible tensioning device B for the drill ing cable 6, is used in carrying out my invention, and. comprises the corresponding par-- allel shorter bars 7, pivoted at their inner ends, as at 8, to the upper ends of the two members of? the Samson post A. and a longer bar or link 9. The bar or link 9 is pivotally connected at its inner end, as at 10, between the outer ends of the bars 7 oil: the tensioning' device and is provided at i ts outer end with the pulley 11. When the parts are in the position illustrated in Figure 1, as in hoisting and lowering the drilling tools, the bars 7 ol the flexible tensioning device are in a sub stantially horizontal position and the longer bar or link 9 of the latter disposed at an up- Serial No. 222,437.
ward inclination of approximately degrees. lih'uler these conditions, the pulley ll. is disposed above but adjacent the pulley l2, our- .naled between the bars or members 4: ol the walking beam and the drilling cable passes down in. a direct or straight line between said pulleys.
lu drilling, the link 9 oi the flexible tensioning device swung inwardly together with the pulley 11, into a vertical position, as shown in Figure 2 and held in such position by the keeper pin 18, which is inserted through the aforesaid pulley and. the (.ipenings 14 in the upper ends of the upright members of the liamson post. My construction and zlrrangement or the pulleys l l and 11.2, is such as to eliminate friction on the drilling cable while the drilling tools are in operation.
l t will be understood that the drilling cable has one end fastened on the hoisting drum of the drilling rig and carries the drilling tools at its opposite or tree end. The numeral 15 indicates the rig derrick and the lrame of the drilling rig.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it thought that the construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction m ay be re sorted to without departing from the princi ples or sacrificing any of the advantages of: my invention as defined .in the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character specified, a Samson post, a horizontal walking beam, pivotally mounted thereon, a pulley journaled to the outer end of the walking beam, a flexible tensioning device for the drilling cable, said device comprising shorter inner bars and an outer longer bar provided at its free end with a pulley, the outer longer bar and said last mentioned pulley adapted to extend at an upward inclination or moved inwardly into vertical position and means for holding said outer longer bar and pulley in vertical position.
2. In a device of the character specified, a Samson post, a horizontal walking beam, pivotally mounted thereon, a pulley journaled to one end of the walking beam, a flexible tensioning device for the drilling cable, said degrees or moved inwardly into vertical posideviee comprising shorter inner bars pivoted tion and a pin adapted to be inserted through to the Samson post and an outer longer bar the Samson post, pulley and outer longer 10 pivoted to the shorter inner bars and provided bar for holding the latter in vertical position.
5 at its free end With a pulley, the outer longer In testimony whereof he affixes his signabar and said pulley adapted to extend upture. wardly at an inclination of approximately 45 CLAUDE \VHITTET.
