Description
Aug. 6, 1929. o. E. MORGAN COVER FOR HOPPER COOLED ENGINES Fi led June 4, 1928 INVENTOR 01"6/7 ya /Zia? ATTORNEYS.
Patented Aug. 6, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OREN E. MORGAN, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO NOVO ENGINE COMPANY, OF LAN$ING, MICHIGAN. l
COVER FOR IIOIPER-COOLED ENGINES.
Application filed June 4, 1928.
The main object of this invention is to provide a cover for a hopper cooled engine that is effective in avoiding splash. This is of special importance on engines in spray outtits and the like.
Further objects and objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the de scription to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the tollowing specification. The invention clearly defined and pointed out in tl'ieclaims.
A device embodying my invention is clearly illiiistrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Fig. l is a perspective view or a hopper cooled engine, which is shown by dotted lines, the hopper cover being shown by full lines.
Fig. 2 is a partial longitudinal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the cover and the upper part of the hopper.
Fig. 2} is an enlarged sectional view of the screen and the supporting ring.
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the screen assembly.
The parts will be identified by their numerals of reference which are the same in all the views.
l is a hopper cooled engine. 2 is the hop per therefor. 3 is the hopper cover plate. 31 is a vertical tube located centrally thereof and projecting above and below the plate and cast integral therewith. 32 are supportin g lugs within the lower part of the tube. are vents for steam therein below the plate. 84: are the cap screws for the cover plate and 85 is the gasket therefor.
4: is the screen band resting on lugs 32. 41 is the convex brass screen of about forty mesh. 42 is the bail for handling the screen which is welded to the top of the band 4.
Serial No. 282,685.
ingagainst it does notpenetrate through far enough to splash over the top.
To facilitate the escape of steam when the water extends above the lower end of the tube, a plurality of vents 33 are provided.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters p Patent is:
.l. The combination with a hopper cooled .11 inc ot a cover comprising a cover plate with vertical central open tube extending above and below the planeof the'plate and integral therewith, supporting lugs within the lower part of the tube and with Vents below the level of the plate, and a screen with suitable handles supported on a ring within the tube on said supports, as specified.
2. A cover for the hopper of a hopper cooled engine comprising a cover plate with vertical central open tube extending above and below the plane 01'" the plate, and a screen supported within the lower part of the said tube, as specified.
3. A cover for the hopper ot' a hopper cooled engine comprising a cover plate with Vertical central open tube extending below the plane ot the plate, and a screen supported within said tube, as specified. I i
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
OR-EN E. MORGAN.
