Description

Aug. 6, 1929. F. o. coNlLL MECHANICALLY DRIVEN MASSAGE APPARATUS Filed May 16, 1928 Fig.
Patented Aug. 6, 1929.

FERNAN OSCAR CONILL, OF CANNES, FRANCE.
MECHANCALLY-DRIVEN MASSAGE APPARATUS.
Application filed May 16, 1928, Serial No. 278,233, and in France October 29, 1927.
The object ot' the present invention is ar rotated by an axle, the latter being` journaled in said handle and driven by an electrometor. y
An embodiment of the object ot the invention is illustrated by way ot example on the accompanyingV drawing.
Figure 1 shows an elevation. v
Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section.
Figure 8 shows a cross section alongl line III-III et Figure 2.
Referring' to the igures by characters ot reference, the massage apparatus has a driving axle ot shatt 1 mounted to rotate within a hollow handle 4;. The lower end oit said axle .is tl'iiekened and forms one halt 2 of a oluteh Coupling` 3, 17, the other halt 17 beinetixed to a liexible driving Cable 14 driven by an eleetroinotor 1G. rlhe two halves 2, 17 ot the clutch coupling can be brought into engagement and held in en- `eagement with one another by any suitable known means, sueh as a screw member adapted to be screwed .into the lowerend ot the handle 4l and to press the eluteh'hal'l 17 against the clutch halt 2. The upper end 7 of the axle 1 has a smaller diameter and Carries a swinging mass 8 eeeentrieally secured thereto by a coin. A soi-ew nut 9 at the end ott the axle 1 avoids a sliding` or loosening ot the swinging mass S.
The upper part oit the handle terms a nave 15, one end screw tln'eaded, the other end bounded by a rin." sur'ace 5. On the screw threaded end oit the nave 15 a screw nut (S is lixed, thus the swinging mass 8 lying between both nuts 6 and 9. Between nut 6 and ring surl'aee 5 a pulley 10 loosely embraces said nave 15; the crown ot the pulley .is screw threaded and Carries a eylindrieal hood 11, preferably ot` metal. rlhis hood covers or surrounds the end oit the driving axle 1 with its swinging mass, the latter ap- ]noaehing' the inner surilf'aee o1 the hoodr without touching it. The outer surface oit the hood 11 is covered by a layer 12 oit Caoutchouc ot the like resilient i'naterial, destined to come :into Contact with the skin to be massaged.
As the pulley 1() can loosely turn round the .nave 15 the massage body may be easily rolled alongf;` the skin to be .inassaged without a lifting away ot the apparatus from. the skin.y i
The eleriftromotor 1G eut in, the axle 1 will rotate, thus swinging the eeeentrieally arranged mass 8 around its upper end 7 withjin the hood 11. ',lhereby very quick vibrations ot the hood are produced, the number ot vibrations per minute depending` on the speed oil.z rotation ot the cable 14 i. e. o1 the motor 1G. These vibrations produce knocking motions on the skin to be massaged, which may be combined with a rolling massage ot the body 11, 12.
A massage may be executed as well with. the side wall ot the body 11, 12 as with its itront part; :in the latter ease a rotating massage is obtained.
liVhat I Claim is:
1. In. a, meehanieally driven massage apparatus, the Combination, of a motor, an
axle driven by said motor, a swinging' mass eeeentrieally seeured to the end of said axle, a handle surrolmding said axle the 'latter bein o; journaled in the handle. the end of the handle being nave shaped, a pulley loosely mounted on said nave, a hollow hood secured to the crown of saidriLiiulley and covering the end oil? 'the axlek together with the eeeentrioally mounted swinging mass.
2. In a mechanically driven massage apparatus, the eombination ot an eleetroinotor, a handle, a shatt journaled in the handle, a
,swinging mass eeeentrieally secured to one end oit" said shaft, the other end forming one halt' ot a coupling, the other half of said couplingat the end ot a flexible driving cable, the latter driven by said eleetromotor, the end of the handle formino; a nave, a pulley loosely embraeing the nave, a hood, secured to the crown ot said pulleyand surrounding the end et the sha'lft together with the eeeeutrieally mounted swinging mass, the latter approaching the inner wall of the hood without touching?r same, the outer surtaee of the hood covered by a layer ot resi lient inateri al.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this slieoification.
FERNAN OSCAR CONILL.
