COLLAPSIBLE OR PINLESS CLOTHESLINE.
Application led September 5, 1928.
This invention relates to the class of clothes lines and pertains particularly to a clothes line designed to be used without pins or other fastening elements to hold articles of clothing thereon.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a clothes line so designed that articles of clothing will be securely held without fasteners and in addition to this of such character that an increase in weight applied to the line will cause the articles carried thereby to be more tightly gripped.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clothes line formed of a series of metal links each of simple construction and so designed that an article of clothing may be firmly gripped thereby and held by the flexing of one portion thereof as a result of the weight applied thereto against another portion, the article of clothing being arranged between the said portions.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a clothes line constructed in accordance with my invent-ion; i
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan View of one of the sections.
Referring to the drawing in detail there is shown a line of the character embodying the present invention, the same being indie cated generally by the numeral l.
As shown, this line is made up of a series of link bodies, each indicated generally by the numeral 2, each of these bodies comprising a relatively long shank portion 3 coiled intermediate its ends to provide the loop or eye 4. At one end the shank 3 is turned back upon itself to form the hook 5 while thelothe'r end is looped to form the end eve 6, this end eye being arranged vertically while the hoek Serial No. 304,032.
5 at the opposite end is normally arranged in horizontal position.
The material of the link is continued from the loop G forming the relatively large and normally depending loop 7 which terminates at one side in the laterally directed shank 8 normally extending longitudinally and in close proximity to the under side of the shank 3 between the loops 4 and 6, terminating in the hook 9 which engages through the loop 4 forming the intermediate ends of the shank 3.
When the line embodying the present' invention is in use, an article or articles to be suspended therefrom has a portion thereof extended through the large depending loop 7 of a link and this portion is then moved longitudinally of the link to force it between the upper and lower Shanks 3 and 8 respectively. The proximity of the upper and lower shanks 3 and 8 is such that the thinnest of articles may be securely held, however, when weight is placed upon a link the pull down thereon will be exerted chiefly upon the loop 4, thus causing the upper shank to bend downwardly intermediate its ends and bind the material. tightly against the underlying shank 8. From this it will be readily seen that the application of articles to the line will act to cause the links to more tightly grip the same.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that aline constructed in accordance with the present invention may be inexpensively manufactured and used with minimum of trouble as fastening elements such as the usual clothes pins are unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is z- 1.` A clothes line of the character described.l consist-ing of a series of links each comprising a relatively long shank having one en d formed to provide a relatively large loop projecting outwardly therefrom ad- `iacent one end thereof, one end of said loop heilig' extended to provide a second shank lying substantially parallel with the firstmentioned shank on the same side thereof as the loop and connected thereto intermediate the ends thereof. I
2. A clothes line of the character described, consisting et r.. series et loeeely c'rinee'tecl links each comprising a relatively long shank looped intermediate its ends to form an eye, one end of said shank being formed to provide an eye and extended outwardly therefrom to set up a relatively large loop, `said large loop having the side opposite the attached eye extended to forina short shank lying adjacent theeentral portion of and in close proximity to the first-mentioned shank on the same side thereof as the loop and hav- 10 ing hook connection at its end in the firstmentioned "eye,
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature.
