CONTAINER TOP.

This invention relates to containers for the dispensing of paste, ointments, or other commodities from containers such as eollapsible tubes, bottles, or the like, and has particular referenceto caps or tops for such containers that are so designed as to eliminate vthe necessity for screw threaded or other detachable members which are so troublesome because of likelihood of loss from the other parts of the construction,
this present invention being in the nature' of an improvement over the construction in the co-pending application for container tops, filed June 17th, 1927, Serial No. 199,479.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a container and atop therefor having correlated features adapted for co-operation of the top with the container in a peculiarly advantageous and dependable manner, the construction being such as to reduce to a minimum the cost of production of the 'co-operating parts. A further object of the invention is to provide a container top having a sealing member and peculiar means for connecting the sealing member hingedly to the container neck, thesealing member being 4adapted to be swung in either direction around the axis.

1With the foregoing and .other objects in view the invention consistsin the 'arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure l is a side elevation of one form of the improvement, -full lines showingthe sealing member in normal closed position, and in broken lines its position when 'swung either to the right or left from the normal position. t

Referring now more yspecifically to the drawings and to the lirst set of figures, 10 is a container of any suitable nature orv construction for the dispensing of any commodity such as paste or the like, the con-v tainer beingprovided with a neck 11. The neck 11 has a delivery port 12 of any suitable cross sectional shape or caliber, and the outer surface of the neck is preferably tapered or frusto conical inv form and may be, for the sakeof simplicityV ofl construetion, unthreaded or smooth. The amount of taper is inexcessive for the purposesthat will appear shortly'.
13 is a 'cap of any suitable material but preferably formed from thin sheet metal and adapted in size and shape to lit directly and snugly upon the smooth exterior surface of the neck 11 and from which it is not supposed-to be removed after being once applied thereto. This cap 13 may be described as thimble shaped and with a rounded or spherical outer end 14. In the formation of the cap, the forming dies include a punch for striking out a closure member in the nature of a disk 15, but the press that forms the disk is so designed that after being struck out from the cap the disk is returned immediately to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 Where it remains and be lifted out and discarded. While the disk, however, remains in place preliminary to the use of the commodity, thecap is internally sealed, making it impossible for any leakage to take place from the container irrespective of the position in which the container may be placed, stored, or handled.
The primary sealing member above referredto is in the nature of a cap orhoed 16 Vmade of any suitable material such as sheet metal and connected by a pair of.
straps or hangers 17 vto pivots 1 8 on opposite sides of the neck. Thehood 16 is so shaped or stamped as to provide a pocket 19 in its center and into -Which is fitted and secured by any suitable means, such as by friction or glue, a-layer of cork 20 or its equivalent, andthe general'contour of the hood or exterior cap is spherical to conform to the formation ofthe lcap 13 over which it is fitted snugly. lThe diameter of the cork 20 exceeds that Dof the lopening from which the disk r15 is removable in practice so that the hood and cork members in the practice of the invention -constitute a reliable sealing means for the vhole through the cap 13.
Any suitable means may beprovided for pivoting'the hood and hangers 17 tothe neck or cap; In this l.form of the invention vthere'is a ring 21 which carries the pivots 418 and Which is adapted to be slipped snugly and permanently upon the-lower skirt portion of the cap 13. The parts are so designed that When fitted snugly together in this manner, the 'axis of the pivots 18 coincides with the center of curvature of the spherical end 14 of the cap, thereby insuring that the exterior cap orl hood is free to swing laterally in either direction around the axis of the pivots 18 as shown in Fig. 1, for the opening of the delivery port or ports of the container. lVhen the charge of the commodity is delivered in this manner, lthe amount delivered is separated cleanly from the bulk remaining in the delivery port, by
reason of the fact rthat the rounded end of the cap is smooth and unobstructed by the outside closure means, and then when the hood'is returned to normal position as in Figs. 1 and 2, the exterior surface of the cap is left perfectly clear and the bulk of the commodity is retained in air-tight condition Withinthe cap by virtue of the close instance, the container maybe held ineither hand and the hood swung'over to one side by a finger or thumb of the same hand, While the other hand is used to manipulate the tooth brush, and after the charge is so delivered the same hand holding the container Will close the hood without `loss of time or Without difficulty and especially Without the annoyance ordinarily incident to the use of both hands for manipulation of a screw cap or the like. It is pointed out also that from the nature of the capv 13 it is obvious that it may be applied with satis- ,factory results to a conventional container provided that an external screw thread, although for the most satisfactory results it is preferred that the container and cap structure remain as shown herein to conform to each other.
In the form of the invention shown on the second sheet of drawings, there is provided a ring 21, a hood or cap 16, and a` pair of straps or hangers 17 pivoted at 18-substantially identical With those similar features already described, and the container neck 11 and ring 21 are so designed that 'the latter fits snugly upon the exterior tapered surface of the neck Without the inte'rposition of the thimble cap 13. In this form of the invention instead of employing a discardable disk member 15 in a. cap, a corresponding element 15 is formed and is carried in the outer end of the port 12 of the neck and is removable and discardable in accordance with the lpractice described in connection With the first set of figures. The hood or external cap structure is constructed and op'- erates the same as before described, including the gasket or cork member 20. The hood 16 in both forms of the invention includes laterally outstanding lips 22 for the easy opening swinging movement of the hood. Either of these lips may be engaged by the finger nail for the purpose of swinging the hood laterally. They assist also in the closing movement of the hood.
I claim:
A thin metal container cap for a collapsible tubc, said cap having an end and side wall, the end Wall havixlg a portion of sub- Stantially regular conformation struck therefrom and replaced intosaid end wall, and a swingablc cover for the cap carried by the side wall, said cover being movable snugly over the end wall to protect the said portion thereof.
