Application filed September 25, 1928, Serial No. 308,395, and in Great Britain July 2, 1927.
This invention relates to looms for Weaving with more particular reference to those which are fitted with automatic weft replenishing mechanism, and has for its object to provide improved means for cutting the tag ends at the cloth selvedge.
The invention consists in apparatus for this purpose comprising a clamp for holding the tag ends and scissors mechanism for cutting the saine so arranged that the clamp operates just before the scissors come into operation. l
The accompanying drawings illustrate one mode of cai'rying out the invention Figure l is a more or less diagrammatic plan showing a part of the breast beam of a loom with parts mounted and arranged thereon in accordancepvvith the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of a part f the clamp and scissors mechanism according to the invention, and
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the whole mechanism.
In carrying our invention into effect .We may apply our improvements to existing looms or to looms specially built for 'the purpose, and such looms are provided with the usual accessories incidental to weft re.-
` plenishing looms, that is to say, with some forni of magazine (not shoivii) for the cops and with a transferrer a on a hammer shaft l) for the purpose of pushing a full cop into the shuttle and simultaneously ejecting therefrom the empty cop whenever the weftiequirc-s replenishing.
ille may also provide the usual weft forli and hammer mechanism (not shown) 'for bringing into operation. the weft replenishing means such as is commonly employed on automatic weft replenishing looms.
For the purpose of cutting the tag ends of the cloth selvedge We provide a clamp t2, pivoted at 32 (Figures l and for holding in conjunction with the upper prong of the fork member u such ends and a scissors mechanism t3 pivoted at s3 for cutting the same, but our arrangement differs from those hitherto adopted in that the clamp and scis-v sors levers (which may both be operated simultaneously by a cam-operated or other arm or like device tt) are so fulcrumed (as clearly seen in Figure 2) that the clamp Will come into operation to hold the thread betiveeii it and the upper prong of member u before the scissors mechanism so that the weft end is firmly held before it is to be cut and thus the cutting operation can at all times be successfully accomplished.
The clamp and scissors may be opened by means of an arm t5 (Figure mounted on the shaft e. Y
lltivill be understood that the inventionis not to be limited to the foregoing details of construction which are given by Way of cX- ample only, nor is it to be limited to any particular type or construction of loom to which it is to be applied While at the same time it will be evident that many of the improvements hereinbefore described such, for eX- ample, as the temple and temple cutter, shuttle threader, means for lubricating the loom spindle, and means for adjusting the saine, may be applied with equal effectand like advantage to any ordinary construction of loom and are not to be limited in their application te 'weft replenishing looms.
Having now described our invention, what ive claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l l. ln a vreft replenishing leoni for Weaving, a fulcrumed clamp for holding the ends of the cloth and a fulcrumed scissors for cutting said tag ends, a single operating element, the clamp and scissors includingl lever arms positioned to be engaged siinul; taneeusly by the single operating element, the fulcra of the clamp and scissors being so arranged that the clamp operates before the scissors. 2. ln a weft replenishing loom for Weaving, a clamp and scissors mechanism, each including aA fixed member and a movable lever arm, a. single operating element for simultaneously engaging the ends of the movable lever arms, the fulcra of the arms being located at different distances from the operatingelement whereby the clamp operates to hold the tag ends before the scissors cut the same.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification.
SAMUEL TURNER. THOMAS EASTAUGH.
