AUTOMATIC RECASTING CONTROL DEVICE.
Application led December 13, 1927. Serial No. 239,651.
' This invention relates to an automatic recasting control device for use on linotype, intertype, and similar machines, and its chief object is to provide an apparatus of this character which will act in combination with certain elements of the said machines to effect this control and to cause the repeated functioning of the recasting mechanism, and to thus provide: first, for repeating the cast of a slug in lead indefinitely from a composed line of type material; second, repeating the cast of a slug in lead indefinitely from a composed line of ornament matrices, known to thev printer as border; and, third, repeating the cast of strips of lead indefinitely,Y less than type height, and known to the printer as furniture.
A further object is to so construct the device as to make possible the instant change from the operation of setting type; to automatic recasting and vice versa.
. Another object of this invention is a means to permit of its being set to operate at varied speeds as required for the production of different sizes of the lead slugs, and to insure proper cooling of the mold after each cast, and the proper solidity and weight of the said slugs. Y
An important feature ofthe inventionis its construction in such formas to permit of its simple and easy attachment to a linotype or like machine without drilling or other mutilation, or changing or otherwise disarranging any of the parts thereof.
These and other objects and features of the device will be fully set forth in the following specification andclaims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 shows, on a small scale, a side view of the device mounted on a linotype machine which is indicated in dot and dash outline.

Referring now to Figures l and 2 of the drawings; a linotype machine is indicated in dot and dash lines, its principle elements being as follows:
Base 12, platform 13, key board 14, central frame 15, main drive pulley 16, drive belt 17, small pulley 18, main pulley hub 19,A
delivery cam 20 of the casting mechanism, stopping pawl 21, safety pawl 22, stopA element 23 etc.
The invention as shown mounted on the machine in the said Figures 1 and 2; comprises a base element 25 which is secured to the mainl frame by the cap screws 26, which screws are original parts of the machine and are slightly raised for the purpose. The ratchet timing elements which will he described later, are supported on this base element. A cam collar 27 is clamped around thehub 19 and is adapted to revolve therewith and to raise the main lever 28 at each revolution, thus actuating the ratchet disk 29, which by meansof the foot lever 30 releases the oscillating A frame 35. The said A frame, when under pressure of the spring 36, is adapted to be forced over and to push aside the pawl 21. After which it is retracted by the roller arm 37 in contact with an extended portion of the delivery cam.
The safety pawl 22 which has a definite function in the machine as normally operated, viz, before the installing of the device here shown; -is isolated and caused to be inoperative when this device is used. This isolation is accomplished by the elements shown in Figures 8, 9 and 10 in which are illustrated a pawl cap 71 having a bevel tip 72 and a spring member adapted to engage a screw 73 in the safety pawl 22 of the delivery cam. This attachment provides means vto isolate the automatic safety pawl of the machine and to permit of a resting period of the casting` mechanism so as to allow air circula-tion through the empty mold for more effective cooling.
A detailed descriptionof the parts and i functions of the device may now be made, and on reference to Figure 3 of the drawings it will be seen, that the base element 25 which is slotted longitudinally at t() and 41,
supports at its rear extremity, a vertical side frame 42. A stud 43 pivotally supports the main lever 28, and passing through the side frame, provides a bearing for the ratchet disk 29. A pawl is supported on a lift arm 45 and is under pressure of the lspring 46. This lift arm being movably mounted on the main stud. A spring 47 is secured at its upper end to the lift arm 45 and at its lower extremity to the side frame. lug 48 on the main lever 28 extends under the lift arm and its relative position may be adjusted by the screw 49 which supports the said lift arm.
lhen the cam collar 27 is rotated, its raised portion 5() acts to lift the main lever, which in turn raises the lift arm 45 and rotates the ratchet disk by means of the pawl 44 and the teeth of the said disk as seen at 5l. The disk is retained in its new position by astop pawl which is under pressure of the spring 52 and will be described later. In this view-Figure S-the side of the A frame 35 is seen; its left leg being oifset as seen at 53. The power spring 36 is here shown straight down in its operative position; its inoperative position being indicated by the dotted lines 54. The bearing ring 55 of the A frame is supported on -the screw 56 which is an element of the machine proper; freedom of movement is provided by the bushing 57.
Reference will now be had to Figure 6, which lis the rear view of the apparatus as appearing in Figure 2 of the drawings. n
Detachably secured to the back of the ratchet disk 29 are radially disposed timing ribs 60, which are adapted to contact at intervals with the tripping pawl 6l and to move'it outward thus lowering its foot lever 30 to release the leg of the A frame from the stop member 62. This pawl is under pressure of the spring 63 and restrained by the pin 64. The stop pawl 58 is shown in this figure; it engages the ratchet teeth as shown and is under pressure of the spring 52 as before stated.
0n reference to Figure 4; it will be seen, that while the ribs are shown attached at the four quarters of the disk; they may be rie-arranged by means ofthe holes into equal thirds, one being left out; orby the removal of two ribs, leaving twoA set to operate on each half revolution. The object of thisis to compensate for Varying speeds of machines to which the device may be attached, and also to permit of longer intervals of operation when requiredfor the proper cooling of different sizes of slugs, one'of which is cast at each contact of a rib with the tripping pawl.
The device isset 1n operation by throwing Y the spring .36 into a position of contact with the frame of the machine as seen at 1n Figure 2; and its operation is discontinued avances by movingthe said spring back into its inoperative position as indicated by the dotted line 54 in Figure 3 of the drawings.
While I have shown and described the invention in its preferred form; I donot wish to be held rigidly to the exact details thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but claim the right to such changes of form and construction as shall come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows: Y
'1. In combination with a machine of the characterdescribed, an apparatus comprising a supporting member, a timing element thereon mounted, means to actuate the said timing element by power derived from the said machine, and means to transmit an impulse movement from the said timing element to the release members of a casting mechanism.
2. In combination with amachine of the character described, an apparatus comprisinga supporting means, a timing element thereon mounted, means to actuate the said timing element by power derived from the said machine, means to adjust the timed rev, lation of the movement of the said element' flease of a casting mechanism, and means to set the said intermediate element in opera- `i tive position and to release the same at the will of the operator.'
3. In combination with al machine of the vcharacter described, and supported thereon` by suitable means of attachment, an oscil` lating element adapted to co-act with a timing mechanism and at intervals controlled thereby to release the casting apparatus of the said machine and to be returned thereby to its former operative position, means to actuate the said timing mechanism co-incidentally with the said machine, and means to set the said oscillating element in operation and to terminate its action at the will of the operator.
4. In combination with a machine of the character described, and supported thereon by suitable means of attachment, a movable timing element having thereon means to vary its lintervals of action, means to co-act therewith to transmit release movementl lto the casting apparatus of the said machine, means to set the same into and out of active operation" at the will of t-he operator, and means'to actuate the whole co-incidentally with the aforesaid machine. 5. In combination with a machine of the character described an apparatus comprising a rotatable element, adjustable timing members thereon mounted, means to rotate aforesaid machine, an oscillating element mounted between the said rotatable element and-the release members of the casting apparatus of the said machine, and the said oscillating element adapted to be held under pressure and to be released therefrom by the said timing members at set intervals and when so released, to act upon the controlling members of the aforesaid casting apparatus.
6. In combination with a machine of the character described, a timing element suitably mounted, means to transmit impulse movements therefrom to the casting mechanism of the said machine, and a paWl cap adapted to co-act with the said timing element and the said means of transmission, the said pawl cap having a beveled tip member and means for its attachment to the safety pawl of the delivery cam of the aforesaid machine.
7. A device adaptable for attachment to a machine of the class described, comprising a bracket having a longitudinally slotted extension foot for fastening, its upright member carrying a rotatable toothed Wheel, and'associated with the said Wheel, a sectional rib timing trip-off member.
8. A device adaptable for attachment to a machine of the class described, comprising a bracket having a longitudinally extension foot for fastening, its upright member carrying a rotatable toothed Wheel operatively connected to a pendulum like trip-olf A-fork actuating the start of slug casting, which fork, by means of its roller extension receives return movement from an extension of the cam of the said machine.
