I'MPR OVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [72,137, dated January 11, 1876 application filed September 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', CHARLES F. MARTINE,
of Boston, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Attachments for Lamps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a peculiarly-arranged lens adjustment for use with an ordinary coal-oil lamp, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective View; Fig. 2, a side view of the lens, and Fig. 3 a perspective of the collar which connects the lens to the lamp.
In the figures, A represents an ordinary hand-lamp for burning coal-oil. B represents the metal band which surrounds the throat of the lamp. Around this band is placed a loose metallic collar, C, which is made fast at pleasure to said band by means of a set-screw, E. Secured to this collar C are two lugs, D D, opposite to each other, on ,the upper side of said These lugs are provided with them. F represents a convex lens, made of suitable size, and of glass. This lens has its edge surrounded with a metal band, and connected to this band are two curved wire rods,
G G. The curve of these wires is circular, taking the center of the flame of the lamp as a radiating-point.
The rods G G are inserted in the holes 0 e in the lugs D I), and by moving them to and fro in these holes the angle of the lens is adjusted with reference to the flame of the lamp, so as to cast the light in a direct horizontal line, or in a line below that, according to the requirements of the user of the lamp.
1 may use a blue lens, or one of any other color, as I may see proper or desirable.
I am aware that the simple combination of a water, or solid glass lens, has been used .before, and is not new; hence I disclaim said combination, broadly; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The lens F, provided with a rim and curved legs or supports, whereby the lens may be raised or lowered upon the periphery of a circle, when used in combination with a coal-oil lamp or gas-jet, the blaze of such lamp or jet being the center of the circle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 'have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of August, 1875.
CHARLES F. MARTINE.
