Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS GERBER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO KLINE, LOGAN St GO., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWAGES FOR SHAPlNG MATTQCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172, l 12, dated January 11, 1876 application tiled June 12, 1875.
To all 'whom it #my concern Be it known that I, LOUIS GERBER, of Pit-tsburg, in. the county of Allegheny and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swages for Forming the Bidges in Mattocks, Ste.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Ihe object of my invention is to furnish a swage for forming and inishing the ridge in the center of blanks for mattocks, grubhoes, Svc., by-which the blades are stitt'ened and strengthened, and the ridge is extended and nicely rounded, and connected with the elevated eyes. lt consists of a peculiarly-shaped swage, provided with an eye for a suitable handle, and having its face beveled toward each side, and being curved toward one end, in such manner as to form the curved ridge that extends to and connects the eye of inattocks, grubhoes, 8vo., with the blade.
These ridges `have heretofore been formed by hammering or between dies, and thus could not be nished so smoothly and centrally as by using my improved swage.
I will now more definitely describe the same, reference being had t'o the accompanyingdrawing and the letters of reference thereon.
In thev drawing, Figure l represents aside elevation of the swage. Fig. 2 is a front view of the saine.
The upper part or shank A of my improved swage is of the usual form and size of such tocls, and provided with a suitable eye, B, for the handlecommonly used therein. The face O of the swage is beveled toward each side from the center, as best seen in Fig. 2, and is curved toward one end, D, to t'orm the raised or curved part ot' the ridge that connects the blade with the eye ot' lnattocks, grub-hoes, &c.
By this ridge the blade is stitiened and strengthened, and better united to thev eye, at the same time giving a better finish and appearance to such mattocks, hoes, Snc., and the ridge is always formed in the central part of the'blade.
The advantage and cheapness of this improved swagel will be readilyunderstood by all familiar with the art and use of such tools and its adaptability for the purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The swage herein described, consisting of the shank A, provided with eye B, and having the curved face C, beveled toward the sides, when constructed substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereby aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LoUIs GEEBEE.
Witnesses E. G. KREHAN, B. E. KEUGH.
