PILOT-LIGHT CONSTRUCTION.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pilot light construction especially designed for use in connection with hydrocarbon burners where it is desired to have a reliable pilot light \Vhere a pilot light is employed, it is'essential that the same be adjustable, and where the adj usting means has been placed at a remote point,
where it is most generally convenient, con- ]0 siderable difliculty'has been experienced by the frequent extinction of the pilot flame which is due to the already low' gas pressure being materially reduced by expansion in the pilot supply tube or pipe.
It, therefore, is an object of this invention to provide an improved pilot construction wherein the flow of gas supplied the pilot flame is adjusted at a point adjacent the flame by an adjusting member located remote therefrom and at a convenient point.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved pilot light construction having means adjustable at the pilot tip, but controlled from a remote point for adjusting the pilot light.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a pilot light construction including asupply tube capable of being bent to any desired shape and having its end terminating in a pilot tip, the orifice of which is adjustable by a needle valve of metal having a low co-etficient of expansion and controlled by a flexible r d or cable from a remote point, whereby temperature changes in nowise disturb the pilot adjustment.
'lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far dovised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one type of oven heat regulator equipped with my improved pilot light construction;

Figure 2 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, taken through the pilot light structure on the plane of the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view, partly in section and partly in elevation, taken through the pilot tip portion of the pilot structure on the plane of the line-33 of Figure 2.
This application is a division of the one filed November 10, 1923,.Serial No. 673,953, and as the typeof oven heat regulating device illustrated in the drawing-is identical with the one illustrated in said application, the description of the same will be but fragmentary, reference being had to said application for the specific construction of the heat regulating means.
In the drawing, 5 designates an oven of any type having a burner 6- connectible with the usual stringer or gas supply pipe 7 through a manifold 8 and a heat regulating mechanism 9. As is customary in devices of this character, a pilot device is provided for maintaining a constant pilot flame 10 at the burner 6 and in this instance, is in the form of a tube 11 connected at its outer end with the gas supply line 12 of the heat reguu lating system by a coupling 13 connected with the gas supply line at an L 14 therein. The inner end of the tube 11 is formed with a pilot tip 15, preferably constructed of Monel or other metal having a low co-efiicient of expansion, and the tube 11 is preferably of annealed metal to permit its being flexed or bent to the shape best suited for its particular installation. As illustrated in Figure 3, the pilot tip 15 of Monel or other metal having a low co-eflicient of expansion may be welded or otherwise secured to the tube 11.
The pilot tip 15 has a jet orifice 16 through which the gas escapes to burn in the flame 10 adjacent the burner 6. The size of the pilot flame is adjustable from the front of the oven by a knob 17 connectible with a flexible shaft or cable 18 leading to ah enlargen'ient 19 threaded in the pilot tip 15. The enlargement 19 has longitudinal grooves or slots 20 formed in its side and extending through the length thereof to provide fuel passageways and a needle valve member 21 is extended from its outer end to cooperate with the orifice of the pilot tip to regulate the size of the flame, as will be readily apparent. The enlargement l9 and the needle valve member 21 are also preferably formed of Monel metal or any other metal having a relatively low coefficient of expansion so that temperature changes resulting from the heat of the burner 6 and the pilot flame in nowise varies the volume of fuel passing from the jet 16. The knob 17 for controlling the pilot adjusting means is preferably located at the L 14 for convenience to the operator, and is so constructed as to permit the expansion or contraction of the shaft 18 rearwardly of the enlargement 19;
The adjustment of the gas supply to the pilot light at the pilot tip insures the maintenance of the proper pressure at the pilot and the tube 11 being bendable permits its being flexed to assume any necessary shape. I
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of this character appertains, that I provide an improved pilot light construction adapted for use in l connectlon with hydro-carbon burners which will permit the ready adjustment of pilot light from a remote point, will be unaffected by expansion or contraction of the parts and will assure the proper maintenance of the desired pressure at the pilot.
What I claim as m invention is:
1. A device of t e character described, comprising an elongated tube, an extension at the outer end of the tube and having a reduced orifice to form a pilot light jet, said extension being internally threaded and of metal having a low coeflicient of expansion,
an elongated flexible shaft positioned within the tube, a threaded enlargement on the inner end of the flexible shaft and having a threaded engagement with the threads of the extension, a needle valve extended from the enlargement to the pilot orifice whereby rotation of the enlargement through the flexible shaft adjusts the needle valve member with relation to the pilot orifice and adjusts its' area, said enlargementand needle valve member being of metal having a low coefficient of expansion and said enlargement having a passage therethrough to permit fluid introduced into the tube outer end portion to pass through the pilot orifice, and an adjusting head positioned exteriorly of the outer end of the tube and fixed to the flexible shaft for rotating the same, expansion and contraction of the flexible shaft due to temperature changes working rearwardly from said enlargement whereby the adjustment of the needle valve member is undisturbed.
2. In a device of the character described, a pilot tip having an orifice, means for supplying fuel to the tip, a valve cooperating with the tip for adjusting the area of theorifice, the tip and valve being formed of metal having a ow coeflicient of expansion whereby the adjustment of the valve with respect to the tip remains fixed during temperature changes, and means for operating the valve from a point remote from the tip.
