This invention includes a novel arrangement of parts whereby to secure a closure against being opened by burglars.
This invention relates to that class of locks having no knob on the outer side of the door and operated by a'knob on the inner side of the door, and made burglar proof by a paracentric key and keyhole in the ward barrel, the keyhole'of which is open to the outside l0 of thedoor.
An object is to make a night latch adapted to be installed in the door instead of on the surface of the door thus to give a more dressy appearance than is possible with night latches l5 heretofore in common use.
Some of the advantages gained are that the striking plate is seated in the jamb and is concealed by the closed door and cannot beremoved or tampered with when the door to is closed and said striking plate does not mar the casing.
An object is to provide a night latch installation in which the outside finish may be varied at small expense so as to match with any form of hardware finish that is placed on the remainder of the building with which thenight latch is provided, and so that the ex-' posed parts may be of polished brass, or other fine material and of any design, expensive or otherwise.
An object is to provide an inexpensive and superior latch lock that is interchangeable with any type of knob either large or small, and that can be used in compact installation with a non-lockable latch, making it a cheap form of a single fixture comprising both a non-lockable latch and a night latch.
Another object isto provide means where by the installed night latch will be immovably fixed to the closure in which it is installed, and to provide for convenient and accurate adjustment of the night latch mechanism with reference to thesides of the closure and the center of the opening through which the bolt operates.
A further objectis to produce a night latch ofthe character above stated which can be made almost exclusively of stampings and die castings. I

The main cylinder 1 corresponds practito well knownmain cylinders of cylin-' 2 which is screwed into the housing 3 and thereby fastened in place.
The ward cylinder 4 is journalled in the main cylinder and is operatively connected by any suitable means with a disk 5 provided with tappet operating pins 6 arranged near the perimeter of the disk 5.
7 is a tappetinside the housing and provided on one of its sides with a bolt connection 8, which is fixed thereto, and is held nonrevolvable thereby and extends through a guide 9 in the housing.
The bolt connection 8 is normally project ed into latching position by a spring 10am locking pin 12 that is mounted'in a pin-way 13, and said pin is notched at 14 on one side to accommodate the cylindrical portionof the bolt connection 8, so that when the pin is turned with its notch toward the bolt connection, said connection is free to be operated by the spring and tappet.
The web 15 of the pinat the notch 14 is arranged to intercept the bolt connection 8 by fitting into the notch 11, therein, when said connection is in its projected or locking position; and the said web 15 intercepts the end of the bolt connection 8 when the bolt is retracted.
By this arrangement the bolt may be locked either in the retracted or in the locking position by simply turning the pin 12, when the bolt is in position for such locking. By this means the bolt becomes a dead bolt when the pin is turned to cause the web to engage in the notch 11; and the bolt cannot be operated by the tappet from either side either with a key or by a knob when thus locked by the pin web.

The finish plate 24 on the outside of the lock surrounds the threaded cylinder 1, and .is provided with a cylindrical flange 25 to hold. the web of the finish plate away from the closure to accommodate an anchor plate hereinafter described.
The outer end of the lock cylinder has a head 26 of less diameter than the threaded portion 2 of such cylinder; and said cylinder has a notch 28 between its head 26 and-its threaded portion 2. 29 is a finishing cap fitted over the head and having its inner rim inserted into and hooked in the notch by pressing or spinning. ,The notch is preferably annular, extending entirely around the barrel; and the annular hook or retainer 30 is preferably the inturned edge of the cylindrical cap walls so that the cap is immovably.

The collar is internally threaded at its inner end and the outer end is reamed out to seat the cap so that the outer face of the cap may be disposed flush with the outer end of the collar when the collar is fully screwed out; that is to say, the reamed out chamber is practically equal in depth to the depth of the cap.
The annular finish plate 24 encircles the cylinder and has its outer face engaged by the inner end of the collar; and the flange of the finish plate fits upon the side of the closure 22.
The finish cap has a central orifice 33 and' the inner end of the cylinder; and the washer 36 is secured to the end of the ward barrel by the studs 35 extending through the washer and riveted so that the washer prevents the barrel from coming out of the cylinder.
The barrel is provided with two holes 38 and the tumbler disk 5 is provided with two pins 40 extending into said holes, and the end of the lock cylinder is chambered at 41 to receive the disk. The-parts just described are assembled on the door after the anchor plate has been secured thereto. The anchor plate is secured to the door with its notch on that side toward which the bolt 51 willbe extended, and the closure is provided with a bolt hole 52 through which the bolt extends.
In installing the lock, the assembled parts are brought to the outer side of the door closure and the housing with its normal contents vlz, the spring, the tappet and the parts true, and will also bring to bear the two finish a screws55. ,Then the inside finish 'plate 56 is applied in position against the closure; then the shank of the bolt 51 is inserted through the bolt hole 52 and is screwed into the bolt connection. Then the guide 57 is placed over the bolt and turned to bring the bolt into proper position to slidingly engage the striking plate 58 when the closure is being shut, and is then driven into the edge of the closure.
Then the inside finish plate 56 is brought into position with its pin handle 59 over the inside'end of the lock pin, and the knob nut 60 is then screwed onto the hub of the housing. At this time the workman will relatively adjust the ring collar on one side and the knob nut on the other'side by screwing them relatively to each other to bring the bolt connection into position to properly aline the bolt with its guide so that it will work freely and plates and bind them firmly against the door.
Then the knob 20 will be screwed home positi vely on the threaded knob spindle, and secured by set screw 61.

In a lock adapted to be applied to a closure that has a lock chambering hole extending from side to side, of-the closure and a bolt-accom modating hole, extending from the lock chambering hole to the edge of the closure; a cylinder lock; a cap fixed to the end of the lock cylinder; a ring screwed onto the lock cylinder and against the cap; a face plate on the cylinder against the ring ;v an anchor plate comprising a flange to fit 011 the face of the closure and a collar adapted to be inserted into the lock chambering hole; a lock housing having one end openrand adapted to be screwed onto the barrel and having its other end formed with an externally screw threaded hub; a spring projected bolt connection adapted to be accommodated in the bolt hole;
' an anchor plate having a flange and a collar corresponding to the first mentioned anchor plate, the collar fitting upon the housing and said flange fitting upon the face of'the closure; screws attaching the anchor plates to the closure; a finish plate around the hub and fitted against the closure; and a nut screwed onto the hub and holding the finish plate in place.
2. In a lock cylinder having an externally threaded portion and a reduced cylindrical outer terminal of less diameter than said threaded portion and provided with a groove between said reduced outer end and the ex ternally threaded portion; an annular cap on the end of the cylinder the inner end of the cap being caught in said groove a ring screwed onto the barrel and against the inner endof the cap; a finish plate on the barrel; an
anchor plate surrounding the barrel and adapted to be fixed to a door and adapted to be covered by the finish plate; a housing screwed onto the barrel and adapted to be ingage a door having a hole adapted to chamber '1 the housing; means adapted to be mounted on the other end of the housing and to engage the face of such door surrounding the chamber; and means screwed onto the housing and adapted to move the'housing relative to the lIlSiClG door engaging means, to clamp the door and locate the housing between the outside and inside face engaging means, and to hold the housing in fixed position relative to said door.
4. In alatch lock unit, ahousing having a longitudinal pin bearing and a bolt connection guideway intersecting each other; a bolt connection slidable in said guideway and provided with a notch to receive the pin, and a shoulder to be engaged by the pin; a pin mounted in the bearing and provided with a notch and a web, the notch being adapted to accommodate the boltconnection when the pin is turned in one position and the web being adapted to enter the notch when the pin is turned in another position to prevent the bolt connection from being operated to prevent retraction of the bolt, and said web being adapted to intercept the shoulder of the bolt connection when the bolt is retracted and the pin turned to shoulder engaging position for the purpose of preventing extension of the bolt.

The combination with ahousing havin an externally threaded hub at one end and provided with an internal bearing, said housing being provided at the other end with a threaded seat; an anchor plate on said housing around said seat; a lock cylinder screwed into said seat; a finish plate on said barrel to engage one side of a door; a cap fixed to the outer end of the barrel; a ring Screwed onto the barrel and against the cap; a finish plate surrounding the threaded hub to engage the other side of the door; and a nut screwed onto said threaded hub and against the finish plate for the purpose of adjusting the housing between the sides of the door in which the housing is mounted and against the sides of which the finish plates are adapted to engage.
6. In a door fixture of the class described, the combination of a housing adapted to be fitted to a transversely disposed aperture in a door, a bolt member carried by said housing adapted to traverse a bolt passage in a door, exteriorly operable bolt-actuating means in said housing, an anchor plate engaging said housing at opposite ends to align and center said housing and its associated parts, a finishing and door-clamping plate adjustably connected at one end of said housing, and a finishing and door-clamping plate adj ustably connected to the other endv of said housing.
7. In a door fixture of the class described,
\ the combination of a housing adapted to be fitted to a transversely disposed aperture in a door, a bolt member carried by said housing adapted to traverse a bolt passage in a door,
exteriorly operable bolt-actuating means in.
said'housing, an anchor plate at each end of said housing adapted to engage a door and having an engagin flange to align and center said housing and its associated parts, a finishing and door-clamping plate adjustably connected at one'end' of said housing, and a finishing and door-clamping plate adjustably connected to the other end of said housing.
8. In a door fixture of the class described, the combination of a housing adapted to be ,fitted to a transversely disposed aperture in a door, a bolt member carried by said housing adapted to traverse a bolt passage in a door,

In a door fixture of the class described, the combination of a housing, a bolt member carried by said housing, means in said housing for actuating said bolt member, a knob exteriorly-of said housing atone end to operate said bolt-actuating means, a lock cylinder adjustably connected to said housing at the other end and provided with key controlled means to operate. said bolt actuating means, anchor plates at each end of said housing to center said housing and its associated parts, and finishing and door-clamping plates adjustably connected with said housing at one end and with said lock cyl- I inder at the other end.

A door fixture comprising a latch hous ing or the like adapted to be fitted into a transversely-disposed aperture of a door, an V operating spindle extending from one end of said housing, an anchoring plate having a flange extending inwardly and fitting around side of a door, and a finishing plate surround .said housing, and having another flange portion extendlng radially for attachment .to the ing said spindle and secured to the housing in position to overlie the radially-extending flange of said anchoring plate.
12. A door fixture comprising a cylindrical latch housing adapted to be fitted into a transversely-disposed aperture in a door, an anchoring plate having 'an inwardly-extending flange fittingaround saidhousing and havlng a radially-extending flange for at-.
