This application is a division of my applicationSerial No. 273,187, filed May 12, 1939, now Patent No. 2,238,314, April 15, 1941, filed as a substitute for my application Serial No. 190,207, filed February 12, 1938.
The present invention relates to looks of the type generally used for doors of homes, apartments, offices and the like, which are operated by rotation of a knob or handle on both sides of the door.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a door lock of improved construction and design which may be conveniently installed, and improved mechanism for the purpose of lock ing the knobs or handles againstrotation in order to prevent movement of the latch. A still further object of the invention is to provide looking mechanism for the aforesaid purpose which is designed to be automatically thrown out of locking position when the door is being shut, thus insuring against accidental or unintentional locking of the door. Other objects and advam tages of the present invention will in part be pointed out hereinafter and willin part be ap-, parent to those skilled in the art to which the present invention relates. V
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination of elements and operative arrangements of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention.

The keeper is secured within the door jamb by means of a suite able stud l3 and is adapted to receive therein the head of the latch-bolt to be referred to hereinafter.
The door, [4, which is adapted for housing the lock mechanism; is provided with a'recess formed therein by hole I 5 which is bored through the face of the door and a hole l6 communicating with the hole [5 which is bored through the edge of the door. The door lock comprises a casing I! which is positioned in the recess of the door, and extends through the-bore l6 into the bore [5. at the outer end through'which the latch bolt is adapted to project,and with a removable cover portion 18 adjacent the'inner end topermit access to the mechanism contained therein. The
door jamb which is, bored to provide a recess I therein into which is fitted a cup-shape keeperll having a laterally extending wing at its outer outer end of the casing I1 is preferably also provided with an annular flange l9 which is adapted to bear against a s'houlder formed at the outer end of the bore I6, the face of said flange I 9 lying flush with the edge'of the door. Mounted on the casing l1 within the bore I5 is a spacer washer 20 and threaded on the casing is a spanner nut 2| which bears against the washer 20 in a manner to securely'and rigidly retain the casing within the recess of the door. The spanner nut- 2l is preferably provided with grooves 22 in the periphery thereof to permit adjustment with a suitable tool. The casing I1 is thus held securely against movementand may be easily and conveniently removed from the door when desired.
On the inner side of the door there is provided acover plate 23 and on the outer side of the door there is provided another cover plate 24. Theplates 23 and 24 are provided primarily to cover .the bore l5 and are preferably secured on opposite sides of the do-or'by means of bolts 25 which extend through apertures formed in the inner cover plates 23, and through suitable bushings 26 provided in the casing H, the threaded ends of the bolts 25 entering into bosses 21 formed on the inner surface of the outer cover plate 24. Extending also through apertures formed in the cover plates 23 and 24 and through the casing H, from the inside to the outside of the door, is a square shaped spindle 28 to the ends of which are secured knobs orhandles 29 in-a manner to rotate therewith. This arrangement and construction facilitates the assembling of the varicus parts of the lock in proper alignment and permits disassembling only from the inner side of the door. The knobs are also thus insured against binding with the inner cover plates.
The-casing I1 is provided with an opening Within the casing "there is slidably mounted a latch bolt 30 having a beveled head 3| at its outer end and an open yoke 32 at its inner end. The ends of the yoke 32 are provided with ears 33, the purpose of which will be described hereinafter. Mounted on the latch bolt 30 is a compression spring 34, one end of which is adapted to bear against the head of the bolt 3| and the other end adapted to bear against a shoulder 35 compression spring 34 into unlocked position. Releasing the knob or handle 29 causes the latch bolt to returnto'locking position due to the action of the compression spring 34.
For the purpose of locking the knobs or handles of the door against rotation so as to keep the latch in locked position, I provide a lock arm 31 positioned withinthe recess of the door between thecover plates and secured at one end to'a rotatable shaft SB-which extends through an aperture in the inner cover plate 23. The lock arm 31 isprovided with a groove 39 which is adapted to receive therein the spindle 28, and with a lug which extends through an arcuate slot 4| in the cover portion of the casing 18 and is adapted to bear against one of the ears 33 of the yoke 32, when 'the lock arm 31 is placed in locking position. A compression spring 42 ispositioned within a recess ;43 iormedin the lock arm 31,. which normally urges a ball bearing 44 against the inner side'of the cover plate 23. A recess formed on theinner side of the cover plate 23 is adapted to receive the ball bearing 44 when the lock arm 31"is placedxin locking position. A rotating lever 45 is .secured to the end of the shaft 38 on the inner side of the door, which operates to throw the lock arm 31 into and out of locking engagement with the spindle 28.
It will-be observed thatthe-construction and design of my invention facilitates installation for it eliminates the attendant difiiculties of mortis ing thedoor, asrequired for present installations, andobvia'tes the; use of the usual studs gor the purpose of securing the lock within the cor. provides for more-secure retention of the lock against displacement,- for the spanner nut 25 provides more effectiveretaining means and is less likely to become dislodged and may be easily adjusted when required.
It will be observed also that when the door is in closed position and the lever 45 is moved in the direction forthrowing; the lock arm 3'! into locking engagement withthe spindle, the knobs on both sides of the-doorare held against rotation, thus preventing movement of the latch bolt and opening of the door. The door may thereafter be opened only-after disengagingthe lock arm from the spindle by means of the lever 45. In the event that the door is-in open position and the lock arm 31 accidentally or unintentionally is thrown into locking engagement with the-spindle 28, then, uponshutting of the door the pressure of the striker I2 against the bolt head 3! would move the latch bolt 30 inwardly within the casing l1. Thereupon the ear 33 of the yoke 32 would hear againstthe lug 40 of Furthermore, my improved construction the lock arm. 31 and the lock arm would thus be urged out of locking engagement with the spindle 28. There is thus no danger of being locked out after leaving the inner room and shutting the door from the outside, as is often the case with the locking mechanism presently in common usage. Other advantages may become obvious with use.
While I have described the construction of my improved lock mechanism in detail, I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other Y specific forms, and I desire it to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the specific embodiment herein described and illustrated, but to include any obvious changes which would come within the scope of my invention as ing the latch bolt 30 against the action of the defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is: a
1. Door locking mechanism comprising a substantially tubularcasing including a latch bolt, spring projected means normally urging the latch bolt in door securing position, a spindle havin means operatively related to the latch, bolt for retraction of said bolt by clockwise or counterclockwise rotation, amanuallyoperated locking member having a pivotal portion formed to engage and secure the spindle against said rotation. and means on the locking member extending into the casing cooperating with the latch bolt where- 'by the locking member by the transverse movement of the latch bolt is rotatably disengaged from the spindle upon movement of the latch bolt into door opening position.
2. Door locking mechanism comprising a sub: stantially tubular casing including a latch bolt, spring means normally urging the latch bolt in door securing position, a spindle having means operatively related to the latch bolt, a knob secured to the spindle and rotatable therewith, a manually operated locking member having a pivotal portion formed to engage the spindle to secure the spindle and knob against rotation, and means on the locking member extending into the casing cooperating with the latch bolt Whereby sliding movement of the latch bolt is transmitted to the locking member to rotate the same and disengage the portion from the spindle upon movement of the latch bolt into door opening position.
3. Door locking mechanism, comprising within a casing a latch bolt and-spring means normally urging the latch bolt in door securing position, a spindle extending transversely through the casing and operatively related to the latch bolt, a knob secured to the spindle and rotatable therewith, a-manually operated locking member mounted externally of the casing adapted to engage the spindle to secure the spindle and knob against rotation, said-locking member being formed with a lug extending through a slot in the casing for engagement by the latch bolt upon movement of the latch bolt into door opening position, whereby the locking member is disengaged from locking relation with the spindle. 4. Doorlocking mechanism, comprising within a casing a latch bolt and spring means normally urging the latch bolt in door securing position, ,a spindle extending transversely through the casing and operatively related to the latch belt, a knob secured to the spindle and rotatable therewith, a locking-member-secured adapted to engage the spindle to secure 'the spindleand knob against rotation, and means provided on the locking member extending through a slot in the casing and adapted to be engaged by the latch bolt upon movement of the latch bolt into door opening position, whereby the locking member is disengaged from locking relation with the spindle.
5. In a locking device for a door having intersecting recesses, the combination of cover plates enclosing one recess, a substantially tubular casing positioned within the other recess containing therein a latch bolt and spring means normally urging the latch bolt in door securing position. a
- spindle extending through the cover plates and casing and operatively related to the latch bolt, knobs secured to the ends of the spindle and rotatable therewith, a locking member within the first recess of the door externally of the casing adapted to engage the spindle to secure the spindle and knobs against rotation, said locking member being mounted on a shaft extending through the inner cover plate and manually operated by means outside thereof, and means on the locking member extending through a slot in the casing and adapted to be engaged by the latch bolt upon movement of the latch bolt into door opening position whereby the locking member is disengaged from looking relation with the spindle.
6. In a locking device for a door having intersecting recesses, the combination of cover plates enclosing one recess, a substantially tubular casing positioned within the other recess containing a latch bolt and spring means normally projecting the latch bolt indoor-securing position, a latch bolt operating spindle, the ends whereof extend through said cover plates, a locking member within the first recess of the door externally of the casing to secure the latch bolt operating spindle against rotation, said locking member having an operating portion extending through one of said plates for manual operation thereof at one end thereof and including means Within said first recess at the other end thereof directed to engage means carried bysaid latch bolt to move said locking member from a locking position upon movement retracting said latch bolt.
7. In a locking device for a door having intersecting recesses, the combination of cover plates enclosing one recess, a substantially tubular casingpositioned within the other recess containing a latch bolt and spring means normally projeoting the latch bolt in door-securing position, a latch bolt operating spindle, the ends whereof extend through said cover plates, at rotatably mounted locking member within the first recess of the door, externally of the casing, to secure the latch bolt operating spindle against rotation, said locking member having an operating portion extending through one of said plates for manual operation thereof at one end thereof and including means within said first recess at the otherend thereof directed to engage means carried by said latch bolt to rotatably move said locking member from a locking position upon movement retract ing said latch bolt.

In a locking device for a door having intersecting recesses, the combination of cover; plates enclosing one recess, a substantially tubular casing position'ed within the other recess containing a latch bolt and spring means normally projecting the. latch bolt in door-securing position, a latch bolt operating spindle having a keying contoured portion, the ends whereof extend through said cover plates, a'locking' member having a portion formed to engage said keying contoured portion of said spindle within the first recess oi the door, externally of the casing, to secure the latch bolt operating spindle against rotation, said locktractible latch bolt and provided with a rock shaft having means including a roll back to retract the latch bolt upon rocking movement of the rock shaft in either clockwise or counter clockwise direction, and said bolt having means adapted to cooperate with a striker to move the bolt inwardly without operation of the rock shaft, the combination of an escutcheon plate adapted to be attached to the door and cover a recess therein through which the rock shaft passes, a locking member rotatably mounted at'the inner side of the escutcheon plate upon a bearing formed thereon and having a part extending through said escutcheon plate for rotatable manual operation thereof, said locking member being formed to permit said rock shaft freely to rock in either direction, in one position of said locking member, and being formed with another portion whereby said member may be moved to engage said rock shaft to hold said rock shaft against rotation in another position of said member and having further combined therewith a bar attached to the locking member and adapted to extend inwardly into the path of the inner end of said latch bolt whereby it is engaged by the latch bolt, and the locking member moved from opera- -tive locking to unlocking position on inward movement of the latch bolt.

In a latch construction adapted to be applied to a door, said latch construction having a retractable latch bolt and provided with a spindle operably associated by a roll back with said bolt to retract it on rocking said spindle in either direction, and said bolt having means adapted to cooperate with a striker to move the bolt inwardly without operation of said spindle, the combination of a plate assembly comprising an escutcheon through which said spindle passes having on the inner side thereof, a locking member rotatably mounted adjacent the inner side of the escutcheon plate and having a part extending through said escutcheon plate for rotatable manual operation thereof said locking member having a spindle portion formed whereby in one position thereof the spindle may freely rock in either direction, and including a spindle engaging portion formed whereby in another position thereof said spindle is held against rotation, an extension of said spindle engaging portion being arranged to extend into the path of movement of an inner portion of said latching bolt whereby it is engaged and the locking member moved from operative position to unlocking position on inward movesecting recesses, the combination of cover plates enclosing one recess, a substantially tubular casing positioned within the other recess containing a latch bolt and spring means normally projecting the latch bolt in door-securing position, a latch bolt operating spindle, the ends whereof extend through said cover plates, alocking member operatively accessible externally of the casing from Within the first recess to secure the latch bolt operating spindle against rotation, said looking member having an operating portion extending through one of said plates, for manual operation' thereof at one end thereof and including means extending to within said first recess at the other end thereof directed to engage means carried by said latch bolt to move said locking member from a locking position upon movement depressing said latch bolt independently of the operating spindle.
