DISHWASHING APPARATUS.
Application filed January 25, 1927. Serial No. 163,510.
My invention relates to improvements in a dish washing apparatus by which the positions of the water streams or sprays are definitely and automatically changed relatively to its contents during its operation.
Various modifications of this water system are possible, within the scope of the invention, and while I have hereinafter described vand shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is not intended that it should be confined to this particular construction which comprises a plurality of travelling pipes, each of which 1s fitted to a water chest aving a flexible connection with a water supply, and a valve control for the flow of water, from the water supply .to the pipes.
For an understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings,
in which; I
I Fig. 1 is a: fragmentary sectional elevation of a dish washing apparatus constructed according to this invention, b
Fig. 2 is a sect'onal elevation on the line 2 2, Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan'view of the water system shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4-4, Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional-view on the line 5-5, Fig. 3, and
Fig. 6 is a detail View of a pivoted yoke.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
The housing 1, which may be of any convenient shape and size, dolesnot constitute any part of the resent invention and it is only referred to or the purpose of explaining the novel features of the apparatus. Journalled at or nearthe'bottom 2 of the housing is a rotatable shaft 3', driven preferably by an electric motor, and, provided within the housing with right and left screw threads 5 and 6 respectively and stopping shoulders 7 and8 at the ends of the threads. Movable axially of the shaft 3 is a carriage 9 having a bore 10 through which the shaft is entered and a yoke 11 within the bore 10 for engaging the threads of the shaft and causing the travel of the carriage. In order that the movement of the carriage may be automatically reversed at each limit of its travel, the yoke 11 is provided, intermediate its ends, with a pin or arbor 12 swivelled or stopping shoulders.
pivoted in a socket 13 extending vertically from the bore 10. The engagement of the screw threads 5 or 6 with the yoke 11 causes the travel of the carriage 9 alternately tothe right or left of the housing, and at the limlt of travel, in each direction, the yoke 11 alternately comes into contact with the Each shoulder causes it to oscillate and transfer from the screw thread, which has moved it to one'limit of travel, into the screw thread which will move it to the opposite limit, thus automatically reversing the immediate preceding direction of the carriage.
Mounted on and movable with the carriage 9 is a water chest14 having an inlet 15 connected by an extensible-flexible pipe 16 with the water supply pipe 17. This extensible-flexible pipe, as shown in Fig. 2, comprises two telescopic sections connected supply 17 by universal couplings 18. The to escopic sections and the universal couplings permit of the automatic extension and contraction of thepipe and its continuous change of position during the travel of the carriage back and forth on the shaft. Leading from the water chest are three outlet ports 19, 20 and 21, arranged around a vertical bearing 22 in which is journalled an intermittently rotatable valve stem or post 23. These ports 19, 20 and 21 are evenly spaced from each other and from the axis of the bearing 22, and on the valve stem or post 23 is a rotary valve 24 having a single. port 25 which, during the rotation of the respectively with the inlet 15 and'the water valve 24, comes successively opposite theports 19, 20 and 21, and opens a waterway from the inlet port 15 to the port 19, 20 or 21, with which it is for the time being opposite, the valve at the same time closing the other two ports.
The valve stem 23 projects above the top of the water chest and is provided with three arms 26, 27 and 28 of corresponding length, evenly spaced from each other, and arranged in the form of a crows foot, as shown in Fig. 3. The forward side of each arm is straight and the reverse side is conve'xed and at the base of the forward side of one arm and the reverse side of the next adjacent arm is a concave curve which blends these two sides into one another. At one limit of the travel of the carriage is a horizontal arm 29 and pivoted to the arm 29 is a pawl 30. During the travel of the carriage and water chest in the direction of the arm 29 the pawl 30 engages the forward side of the arm 26 and by such engagement rotates the valve stem 23 and valve 24 one hundred and twenty degrees to bring the port 25 opposite the port 19. The carriage and valve chest continue their travel to their limit of movement until the yoke 11 comes into contact with the stopping shoulder 7, which, oscillating the yoke, transfers 1t from the screw threads 6 to the screw threads 5., The carriage then travels to the opposite end of the shaft and the yoke 11, when it engages the stopping shoulder 8, is transferred from the threads 5 to the threads 6, which cause the carriage to travel again in the direction of the horizontal arm 29. 'The pawl 30 then engages the forward face of the next arm 28 and again rotates the valve 24 one hundred and twenty degrees to bring the valve port 25 opposite the port 20, and on the completion of the next course of travel of the carria e the pawl engages the forward face of the arm 28 and rotates the valve 24to bring the valve port 25 opposite the port 21. Fitted to the ports 19, 20 and 21 are water pipes 31, 32 and 33, each provided with outlets 34 which may be equipped with sprayers or other water discharging devices. The water pipe 31 as shown in Fig. 2 extends horizontally from the water chest and is located at or near the bottom of the housing. The water pipes 32 and 33 are vertical and each has a horizontal arm at its u per end. arm 32 of the plpe 32 extends transversely across and about midway between the top and bottom of that housing and the horizontal arm 33 of the pipe 33 extends transversely across the housing near the top The water pipes 31, 32 and 33 travel with the Water chest and carriage back and forth lengthwise of the housing and change the position of the water streams or sprays relatively to the contents of the apparatus continuouslyrduring their travelling movements,
and by doing so spread the discharge over the entire surfaces of the contents of the apparatus. By limltlng the flow to one pipe at a time the maximum-pressure at the inlet of the water chest is obtained through the pipe and a forceful discharge through the outlets 34 which is 'utilized for driving the water streams or spray against the articles being washed.
To prevent the carriage, water chest and pipesupsetting while stationary or in motion, a track 40 is supported by hangers 41 5 within the housing in parallel relation to the shaft. This track, shown in Fig. 2, is located at or near the top of the housing in the vicinity of its front 42 and above and clear of the doorway 43, so that it will not impede the entry of the articles into, or their withdrawl from, the apparatus. Ex-
The horizontal tending from the end of the horizontal arm 33 is an arbor 44 on which is mounted a grooved wheel 45. The flanges of this wheel overlap the tread of the track and counteract the axial thrust of the arm 31 resulting from the pulsations or pressure of the water flowing from the water chest into the pipes, and also counteract the upsetting movement or tendency to upset, of the carriage, water chest and pipe Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A dishwashing apparatus comprising a housing, a plurality of reciproeatory pipes having outlets for the discharge of water within the housing, means for causing the reciprocation of the pipes and a change of location of the outlets with relation to the contents of the apparatus, means for supplying water to said pipes and an intermittently operable valve for automatically establishing a flow, from the water supply through each of the pipes in succession during their reciprocation.
2. A dishwashing apparatus comprising a housing, a reciproeatory water chest within the housing provided with piped outlets for the discharge of the water, means for causing the reciprocation of the water chest and a change of location of the piped outlets with relation to the contents of the apparatus, means for supplying water to said chest and an intermittently rotatable valve for automatically establishing a flow from the water chest through each piped outlet in succession.
3. A dishwashing apparatus comprising a housing, a reciproeatory water chest within the housing provided with piped outlets for thedischarge of the water, means for-causing the reciprocation of the water chestand a change of location of the piped outlets with relation to the contents of the apparatus, means for supplying water to said chest an intermittently rotatable valve for automatically establishing a flow from the water chest through each piped outlet in succession, and means for causing the rotation of the valve during .the reciprocations of the water chest.
4. A dish washing apparatus comprising a housing, a rotatable shaft having right and left hand threads journalled within the housing a water chest, a carriage for the water chest movable axially on the shaft, said water chest having an inlet port and a pluleft hand threads journalled within the housing, a water chest, a carriage for the water chest movable axially on the shaft, said water chest having an inlet port and a-plu- 5 rality of outlet ports, an intermittently rotatable valve having a port which establishes a circulation from the water chestthrough the outlet ports in succession, a water pipe for each outlet port having outlets for the 1 dlscharge of the water streams, a valve stem for the valve, a plurality of arms extending from the valve stem beyond the Water chest, and a pivoted pawl engaging each arm in succession when the carriage reaches its limit of travel for the partial rotation of the valve.
