UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. TAYLOR AND ALBERT F. KING, 3D, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
BEAM HANGER.
Application filed July 30, 1927. Serial No. 209,602.
The present invention relates to a new product of manufacturing which is generally designated as a hanger, and which especial ly designed to support beams, stringers, joists and similar types of supporting element.
\Vhat we propose is a simple and inexpensive article in the form of a metal strap which is bent to hang upon a main supporting beam or member, and which is constructed to provide one or more chairs for supporting of the complemental beams.
The particular details and their relative arrangement and association constituting the alleged novelty of the invention will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan View of the improved hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention.
F ig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, looking in the direction from left to right in Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the hanger.
Fig. 4 is a view like Fig. 2, looking at the right hand side of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the approximate manner of association of the hanger with a main supporting I-beam.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference character 10 designates generally the hanger. As before indicated, this is in the form of a relatively wide, vet reasonably thin metal strap. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, this is of general U-shaped configuration, the right portion being designated by the reference character l, and the arms being designated by the reference characters 3 and 5 respectively.
Incidentally, it will be noticed that the arm 3 somewhat longer than the arm 5, and depends below the lower end of the latter. Lengths of arms 3 and 5 are important and necessary to this invention. The free end portions 2 and 6 of these arms are directed outwardly at right angles and are equipped with substantially U-shaped clips 1 and 7 respectively. The clips are suitably fastened in place, or an integral part of 2 and 6 and the upwardly directed end portions thereof are provided with openings. The arms together with the laterally directed end portions and clips constitute what may be designated as chairs for reception of end portions of supplemental supporting beams.
As shown in Fig. 5, the hanger straddles the I-bea n 11, the arms depending on opposite sides of the web portion, thereby disposing the chairs on opposite sides ready for reception of right angularly extending beams, joists, or other supporting elements.
The openings in the outwardly directed end portions of the clips serve to permit fastenings to be driven therethrough into the supporting member or in the case of steel beams to be bent down against the flange forming a clamp to insure against accidental displacement in longitudinal or transverse directions.
In the form shown and described, a double chair support is thus provided. Attention is directed to the fact however, that in some instances, a single supporting chair may be desirable. In this connection, attention is dirccted'to Fig. 3, wherein it will be observed that the reference character 8 designates a division line indicating that the lower portion of the arm 5 has been severed, thus providing said portion 9 which may be bent inwardly as indicated in dotted lines to engage the flange of the supporting beam 11, and thus a single supporting chair is had.
It is believed that by considering the description in connection with the drawings, a clear understanding of the construction, method of use and advantages of the invention will be had. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
Minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if de sired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is As a new product of i'nanufacture, a beam hanger of the class described comprising a substantially U-shaped metal strap including spaced parallel depending arms having their free end. portions directed outwardly at right angles in opposite directions to provide rests for beams, and the like, and retaining clips fastened to the free ends of said portions, and constructed and bent to grip the flanges of the supported beams.
In testimony whereof we allix our signatures.
ROBERT S. TAYLOR. ALBERT F. KING, 3RD.
