1 UNITED STATES WILLIAM A. MUDGE, OF VINELAIN D, NEW JERSEY.
SOOT-DUMPING INSTALLATION FOR BROODER HEATERS.
Application fiIed October 11, 1928. Serial No. 311,845.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in brooder heaters of the coal or wood burning type, particularly that charactor of burner that is provided withinits upper end with a balile plate constructed to cause the circuitous passage of the smoke from the fire to the smoke outlet. It is well known that in the use of this type of heater, soot or other foreign matter will collect upon the top side of the battle plate, preventing the proper ventilation within the heater. It is therefore the purpose of this invention to provide means whereby the soot and foreign matter may be readily dumped from the baflie plate. Furthermore, the present invention resides in the provision of a battle plate unit that may he provided in lieu of the battle plates now in use in. this type of burner without in any manner whatever altering the remaining structural features of the heater, and without interfering with the proper operation of said heater.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a detail vertical section through a generally conventional type of brooder heater equipped with my improved baffle plate.
Figure 2 is a section taken directly beneath the top wall of the heater and looking clownwardly upon the plate.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken through the plate and upper end of the heater substantially upon the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary outer side elevation of one end of my improved baffle plate, and
Figure 5 is a perspective of the operating.
ventional design, that is in the form of a ring segment, and being provided at its inner edge with the usual upstanding flange 6 for engagement upon the under side of the top wall of the heater A, partially around the gas chamber B, one end of the battle plate being provided with the usual vertical wall 7 to prevent the smoke within the burner from passing through that end of the plate. Furthern'iore the opposite ends of the bafiie plate at the upper edge of the flange 6 are provided with the usual tongues 8-8 having openings therein to permit the plate to be riveted, bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the top wall of the heater. ent invention consists in the provision of a pair of adjacent openings 9-9 inthe plate 5 at the closed end of the said plate. Furthermore, the single end wall of said plate is provided with spaced pivot tongues 10 through which a pivot pin 11 extends. Loosely pivoted to the ends of this pin 11 are the outer ends of tongues 12-42 associated with one end of a curved door 13 adapted to be normally disposed against the bafiie plate 5 beneath said openings 9-9 for maintainin the same closed. Associated with this end of this door 13 and projecting beyond the said pivot pin 11 is an arm 14 to the outer end of which is loosely pivotally attached the lower end of a vertically extending control lever 15, which lever projects upwardly through a slot .16 in the top wall of said heater A, see F igure 3. The rear edge of this lever 15 is provided with a pluralit of spaced notches 17 for engagement over t 1e edge of the slot 16 to maintain the door closed, partially open or fully open, as is obvious.
In view of the foregoing description when considered in conjunction with the accom- 9 panying drawing it will be a parent that when soot collects upon the ball e plate 5 be neath the smoke discharge C it is only necessary to move the lever 15 forwardly and thence raise the same, which will bring about the opening of the door to permit the soot or other foreign matter to drop through the openings 99 into the heater. Thus the baflie plate can be maintained substantially clean to prevent the proper draft through the stove.
Even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is nevertheless to be understood that some changes may be made The essence of the pres- Without affecting the spirit and scope of the claim. I p 7' Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a brooder heater of the character described, having a heater body provided with a smoke discharge opening, and a guide opening in its top wall, a baflle plate of segmental ring-like formation arranged within the upper end of the body beneath the smoke discharge opening, an upstanding flange at the inner edge of the plate for engagement with the top wall of the body, a vertical wall at one end of the plate to prevent passage of the smoke between the baflle plate and the top wall of the body at that end of said plate, said plate being equipped with an opening adjacent to and below the smoke discharge opening, of a door pivot-ally associated with the lower face of the plate and adapted to normally close the opening therein, a bar socured to the door and extending beyond the pivot point thereof, and a lever slidable through the guard opening in the top wall of the body and pivotally connected to said bar, whereby said door may be opened or closed, said lever being arranged at one side 01 a smoke discharge opening and having notches in one edge thereof for engagement with one wall of the guide opening to hold said door in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM A. MUDGE.
