Filed Jan. 18, 1928 Inventor 261m] Evian Attorney Patented July 9, 1929.
UNITED STATES HOWARD BURTON, on DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
ARTICLE HOLDER.
Application filed January 18, 192%. Serial No. 247,613.
The present invention relates to improvements in article holders and has reference more particularly to a device for attachment to a workmaifs apron or overalls at any convenient place thereon for positively holding tools or implements in a pocket against dis placement therefrom even when the workman is in a stooping position. a
Another important object of the invention is to provide an article holder that also facilitates the attaching of a tool receiving pocket in a detachable manner on the garment.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, the parts being so arranged as to permit the same to be readily and easily operated for securing or removing the attachment from the apron or overalls.
A further object is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purposes for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description when taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawing. a y i In the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device securedto an apron, and more clearly disclosing the manner in which the implements are supported on the device.
Figure 2 is a detail perspective View of the back pins.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the upper portion of the back side of the separable pocket showing the eyelets formed therein for cooperation with the sharpened headed pins of the back plate.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the slidable casing looking from the rear side thereof, and a Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 1.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a substantially rectangular shaped metallic back plate that has extending from the front face thereof, at spaced intervals plate that carries the sharpened headed the laterally projecting pins 2, the same termmatmg at their upper ends in sharpened or pointed heads Sfor a purpose hereinafter toybe more fullydescribed. v
The plate 1 is adapted for disposition against the rear or inner side of an apron or overalls A in any convenient place, and
the pointed headed pins 2 pierce the garment in the manner as clearly shown in Figure 5.
a A tool receiving pocket designated generally by the numeral 4 and consisting of the back and front sections 5 and 6 respectively which are stitched together along their side and lower edges constitutes a salient part of the present invention, and as is clearly shown in Figure 1, theupper portion of the back side 5 of the pocket 4 extendsbeyond the upper edge of the front side and this back side 5 is formed adjacent its upper edge with the spaced eyelets 7 through which the sharpened headedpins 2 protrude in the manner also clearly illustrated in Figure 5.
Arectangular shaped casing S of substa11- tially the same length as the back plate 1 is formed in its rear side with a longitudinally extending slot 9 for the full length thereof, and this slot is of a width slightly less than the diameter of the enlarged portions of the heads 3 formed on the forward ends of the laterally projecting pins 2. One end of the casing is formed with a V-shaped notch 10 that communicates with oneendpf the slot 9 whereby tl ie casing 8 may he slid longi tudinally across the front of the back plate 1,; the heads 3 entering the casing through the notchl0, while the shanks or pins will ride in the slot 9.
The rear side of the casing 8 will engage the front face of the upper portion of the back side 5 of the pocket 4 in the manner as clearly shown in Figure 5, andthe casing will he frictionally held in proper position on the pin against free sliding movement so that the casing cannot he accidentally displaced.
An elongated flat strip 11 is secured on the front-face of the casing 8,said strip being of a greater length than the casing. One end of the strip is disposed laterally as at 12, and this laterally extending portion is provided with an opening 13 to permit the attachment of a looped member or safety pin, not shown, on which is carried identification tags or other suitable elements.
The other end of this strip 11 is formed with a forwardly disposed curved portion 14 that terminates in a laterally extending finger A smaller strip of metal 16 is pivotally secured intermediate its ends to the forwardly curved portion 1 1 as designated by the numeral 17, theinner end ofthis pivoted strip 16 being so bent as to form a jaw 18 that cooperates with a jaw 19 formed at the juncture, of the intermediate portion of the strip 11 and the forwardly curved portion 14 for the purpose of supporting a tool and in the present instance, said tool is a micrometer.
' The other end portion of this auxiliary strip 16' is bent to provide a laterally extending finger 20 that is disposed in spaced relation with respect to :the finger 15 and each-of these fingers is provided with an inwardly directed struck out portion that provides a support for the respective ends of an expansible coil spring 21' that is interposed between the fingers 1'5 and 20 for normally holding the jaw 18 and'19 in a closed position.
By arranging the fingers 15 and 20 so that s A the same extend beyond the outer end of the casing 8, said fingers may be readily and easily grasped and actuated by the workman to open the jaws and permit the removal of the micrometer B whenever it is desired to use the tool. However, when the micrometer is not in use, the same will be supported in the pocket 1' against displacement therefrom by means of the coactingj aws 18 and 19.
Carriedby'the strip 11 adjacent the laterally extending apertured ear 12 is the scape holder'22, the lower edge of which is .so construeted as to provide a spring lip 23 that engages the scale C and holds the same against the front face of the strip 11 so that the .sealecannot he accidentally displaced from the pocket 4 when the workman bends .The tool holder may be used or without the pocket and by sliding the casing 8 in one direction, the same can be readily and easily detached from the headed pin 2 whereby to permit the entire removal of the attach- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 7 Patent is 1. In a fastener for an article holder adapted for attachment to a garment, a plate for disposition against the inner side of the garment, sharpened headed pins projecting from the front face of the plate and adapted to pierce the garment, an article carrying member formed with a slot to facilitate sliding movement of said member across the front side of the garment over the headed pins and I supported thereby, said slotted member cooperating with the headed pins to prevent the disengagement of the pin carrying plate from the garment.
2. In a fastener for an article holder adapted for attachment to a garment, a plate for disposition against the inner side of the garment, sharpened headed pins extending laterally from the front face of the plate and adapted to pierce the garment, an article carryingcas'ing formed at its rear side with a longitudinally extending slot to accommodate said pins, one end of the casing being open to permit said casing to freely slide over the heads on the outer ends of the pins, said slotted easing cooperating with the headed pin to prevent the displacement of the pin carrying plate from'the garment.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HOWARD BURTON.
