July 9, 929 W. T. BEVERLY SHIPING RECEPTAGLE Filed April 10. 1928 Patented July 9, 1929.
maaar 'WALTER T. BEVERLY, 0F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SHIPPING RECEPTACLE.
Application led April 10,
illy invention relates to shipping, .receptacles` or containers, and ia p-rovixaid with nonheal'condurtiinr walls, so that in that respect it is: somewl at like a lireleee cooker or a thermos bottle.
lily object is to provide a Shipping receptacle which will, 'lier a considerable period oll timei kee p the article Stripped, at approximately the Saule temperature which it had when tiret placed in the receptacle. To this,v end it specially useful ae a Shipping` receptacle for ice cream. The receptacle keepe the cream from melting, and thun the expense and disa `"reeable labor of packing in salted ice is obviatcd. But the receptacle and its contr-arte reach the customer in prime condition, and the can olf cream can be litted out ot the receptacle whenever desired. ill/hen the cream has been emptied, the receptacle containingthe empty can is 'ready to be returned. to the .mainiacturer dry and clean ready for another shipment. This ie a great improvement over the soggy, water-soaked shipping' receptacles now in common use.
nolher object is to provide a Shipping' receptacle having an cuter wall of fabric surrorm'ding a. lilling et `ground cork or the like.
Still another object is to provide novel means tor securely clamping' the ends oit the outer labrlc cover to hold said cover taut at all times.
@ther objects will appear in the eubjoined description.
rthe invention consiste in certain novel teaturee of construction and arrangement ot parte, as will now be described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawin in which g- Fig. l ie a side elevation of one of my shipping' receptacles.
Fi 2 is a vertical section ot the Same, with the cover omit-ted, and; Fig. 3 is a. sectional view, on an enlarged Scale, of a piece of the material used inside the outer flexible covering to prevent the leaking out oit the heatinsulating` material, when Said outer flexible cover is snagged.
A leading feature of the invention consists in a device for the purpose described, having au outer flexible covering Surrounding au inner receptacle, with a lillingof ground cork or other heat insulating material lilled in between the two, with a lining` of water-ln'oofed paper or other flexible material interposed between said outer wall and the lilling of heat-il'isulating material, said 19:28. Serial No. 268,985.
erably, tl'lough not necessarily, Vwaterproolied,
and whenever desired may be provided on ite4 inner Side with a eheet or layer oit loose librous; material 3a or the like, which may be either Secured to the inner face ot the body 3, or may Simply be placed in eng nement ther-ewn `h when the parte of the receptacle are br-ing' assembled in the process of makin p; the receptacle. Between the layers ot fibrous material 3 and il and the wall 2 oit the inner metallic can, a filling et non-lleatcondiul4` inp material i made oi: ground cork, sawd est, or the like. At the top` ot the can in a comparatively broad iand 5 of wood or wood libre iiiterpoeed between the inner and the outer walls ot the receptacle, and this .band ia covered on ite top and sides: with a, coi'eriiig' G of canvas; The inner can 2, at its top, ie rigidly Secured to this4 wooden band by naile or Screws 7, and, the outer 'all l is similarly Secured thereto by nails or screws 8. And the outer flexible wall of the device is provided with a narrow metallic band 9 through which the nails or screws 8 pass` in order to keep their heads 'from penetratineY and cntting; through the flexible outer wall l oil: the receptacle.
At ite bottom the device has a sheet of paper l0 irmnediately underneath the betteln 2 of the inner metallic receptacle; and un- (lerneath this sheet ot paper which is preferably waterproote'd, is a wooden bottom ll Underneath this bottom ll is a` metallic outer bottom l2 provided on itsr upper tace with. a n annular groove or depreSSion 13. Near its upper end the receptacle is provided with a reinforcing band 1.4i made preferably oit the Same material as the outer wall l; and at its lower end this outer wall is reinforced with a broad band l5; and the lower end of the outer wall which is lapped with this reinforcing` band is turned inwardly nudeneath the wooden bottom ll, between the same and the outer metallic wall 12, so that there is a dead air space 16 between said wooden bottom and said outer metallic bottom.
' A metallic ring or band 17 of the same diameter as the annular groove or depression 13 (which groove is overlapped by the inturned lower ends of the flexible cover 1 and lapping band 15) is disposed on top of said .inturned portion of the outer wall 1 and imn'iediately above said groove 13, and pressed on its upper side by the Wooden bottom lll and forced thereby down toward said groove, whereby it exerts a biting action on said inturned flexible portions of the outer cover to hold them secured in place. The receptacle at its bottom is also provided with an outer metallic band 18 held in binding engagement with the periphery of the metallic bottom 12, and secured to the wooden bottom 11 by means of nails or screws 19.
The bottom 2n of the inner metallic can is secured to the wooden bottom 11 by means of nailsor screws 20.
The receptacle is also provided on diametrically opposite sides with lifting straps each consisting' of two vertically disposed paralel straps 21 rigidly secured to the outer cover of the can, and passing underneath the reinforcing bands 14 and 15, and formed at their upper ends just above the band 14t into an outturned loop 22 to form a hand-hold for handling the receptacle.
lThe receptacle is provided with a cap or covering 24, of any ordinary or preferred construction, and may be formed integral with the `outer cover 1 or may constitute a separate piece therefrom; but` as no claimis made to the cover of the receptacle, no particular cover is herein described. l
The wooden or fibre band 5 at the top. of the device with the inner and outer walls both nailed thereto, and the wooden bottom 11 with both said inner and outer walls also rigidly secure-d thereto, binds said parts very strongly together at both the bottom and the top of the receptacle. .And the wooden bottom 11 pressing upon the band which in turn presses the inturned lower end of the flexible cover and forcing the same intov the annular" depression or groove 13 also Vbinds the wooden bottom 11, the metallic bottom 12, and the outer cover, into very rigid and permanent engagement with each other.
In operation, when the outer cover 1 is snagged, the paper lining 3 will prevent the ground cork or other insulating filling l from leaking out; but if the paper lining 3 is also snagged the natural tendency of anopening thus madein paper is to close, especially when pressed back from the inner side by a yielding mass of material such as the packing 4;. This will prevent any ordinary leakingout of the filling 1l, but if still greater protection against leakage is desired, then the sheet oi batting 3 is employed at the inner side of the lining 3. This will render it practically impossible for any of the filling t to leak out., even though vthe cover be snagged very severely. 4
F rom the foregoing, it will bel seen that I have provided a shipping receptacle of simple construction, but with its parts very strongly united together, and one from which the groun d cork or other heat-insulating material cannot leal; out, even though the outer cover be subjected to hard usage causing it to have snagged places in it. i
Havingnow1 described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to have protected by Letters Patent is .A device of the character described, comprising an inner rigid vessel, and. a larger outer vessel with flexible walls surrounding said inner receptacle, said outer vessel having a lower metallic bottom with `an annular groove adjacent the outer periphery thereof a Wooden bottom for said outer receptacle, said wooden lbottom being located above said metallic bottom, with the lower end of the flexible wall of the `outer vessel turned inwardly between said lower metallic bottom and said wooden bottom; a band ofthe same diameter as the groove in the metallic bottom, said p VALTER T. BEVERLY.
