Description

y 9 I w. T. SAUNDERS v 1.719.728
FIREPROOFING DEVICE Original Filed Oct. '7, 1925 Patented July 2, 1929.
WILLIAM '1. SAUNDERS, OF LOS AI IGrEI -ES CALIFORNIA.
FIREPROOFING DEVICE.
Application filed October 7, 1925, Serial No. 61,079. Renewed November 26, 1928.-
This invention relates to improvements in fire proofing devices for use within buildings and the like in the construction thereof, the
eneral object being to obviate any possibility, throughthe risk of fire spreading. from one room to the other, through the walls and partitions of the building.
Another object of myinvention contemplates plate members adapted to enclose the face or base and side walls of rails and studding to form fire looks upon the adjacent sides thereof; thereby preventing the charring of the plates and studding whereby a fire started in one room will be confined therein exclusive of the others and may not spread to an adjoining room through thewalls and partitions.
A further object of the invention comprehends the use of embossed portions formed upon the sides of the device and extending outwardly therefrom an appreciable distance through the approximate thickness of laths carried upon the joist and studding to permit plastering to be evenly applied upon the entire surface of the wall structure.-
With the above and other objects in View, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of the top plate and studding disposed within the side Walls and ceiling and partitions of a room and illustrating the application of the invention thereon.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken through the invention.
Figure 3 is a perspective of a fire locked plate having an abbreviated skirt and adapted to be carried upon the studding.
Figure 4 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective of another modification of the invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein. like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a ceiling joist having a top plate 11, supporting the latter, and in turn held engaged with the ceiling joist 10 by a studding, as indicated at 12, all of the above being of the usual and Well known construction which forms no part of the present application for Letters Patent but is merely mentioned for purposes of illustration in bringing forward the novel advantages of the above entitled invention.
In carrying out my invention I provide substantially inverted U-shaped plates 13 adapted to straddle the top plate 11 in the manner as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing, and having ears 14 struck from the body of the top, as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing and bent upon themselves to support a sheet of heat resisting material, as indicated at 15, preferably formed of sheet asbestos. Said sheet having its respective side edges supported by cars 16 struck from the adjacent sides of the plates 13. Formed centrally, and intermediately, and extending longitudinally along the opposite sides of the plate 13 are embossed slotted portions or fire locks 17, the
embossing corresponds to the thickness of the conventional size and form of laths used in plastering. The lower edges of the sides, as
illustrated, include a plurality of openings 18 for securing the latter to the adjacent sides of the top plates 11 in the instance of said plates forming a portion of a partition wall.
Carried upon the side of the studding 12 are fire lock plates 19 having abbreviated skirts or flanges 20 formed upon the opposite sides thereof and which include a plurality of openings 21 for securing said plates to the corresponding sides of the studding while cars 22 struck from and within the body portion of the abbreviated skirts or flanges 20 support a layer or strip of heat resisting material 23 upon the inner sides of the fire lock plates 19, substantially as illustrated.
In Figure 4 of the drawing, I have illustrated a modified form of the invention comprehending a plate 24, similar in construction to the form of my invention as previously described and illustrated save for the provision of the embossed and slotted fire locks 17 upon both sides thereof. This plate 24 may have its embossed and slot-ted fire lock portions 25 disposed upon one side thereof and arranged upon the inner side of a top plate within a room while the straight side 26 may be arranged upon the outer side of the top plate upon the outside of the building and to have weather boarding, not shown, or similar material secured thereto. A layer or strip of heat resisting material, as indicated at 27, is held within the top and upon the inner surface of the straight side 26 by cars or lugs 28 struck therefrom.
In Figure 5 of the drawing, I have illus trated a second modification of the invention, which is constructed in accordance with the showing of my invention as described and illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing, save for the ears 14; struck from the top and opposite sides therefor, but which further includes a substantially inverted plate 29 inserted with in the inclosure, thus formed, and having a layer or sheet of asbestos, as indicated at 80, interposed between the adjacent walls thereof.
It is thus to be noted from the foregoing description and accompanying drawing that in the employment of the forms of my invention as described and illustrated, that fires starting in one room will be confined therein and prevented from spreading to adjoiningrooms owing to the relative arrangement of the plates upon the top plates and studding, the former having the embossed slotted portions 17 disposed upon the opposite side walls thereof, and extending outwardly from the body portion and sides of the plates a distance equal to the body portion and sides of the plates a distance equal to the thickness of the ordinary plaster lath whereby theplaster, as indicated at 31, may be smoothed over both the laths 32 and embossed slotted portions 17 evenly and with little difficulty. r
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appendedclaims.
Having described my invention what is claimed is 1. An article of manufacture, a fire stop for wall structures including a member designed to straddle the joist; a sheet of heat resisting material interposed between the joist and said member, and means carried by the latter for holding said material fixed thereto.
2. An article of manufacture, a fire stop for wall structures including a U-shaped member adapted to straddle a joist, fire resisting material lining said member, and means carried by the latter for retaining the material.
3. In a wall structure having joists and laths, a fire stop including a member, designed to straddle the ends of the oists, fire resisting material lining said member, means for securing the material to said member, and said member having a perforated wall for the application of plaster thereon.
4. I11 a wall structure having joists and laths, a fire stop including a member designed to straddle a joist, fire resisting material lining said member, means for securing the material to said member, and a perforated embossed portion projecting from said member and lying flush with the outer surface of the laths for the application of plaster thereon.'
Y In testimony whereof I affix'my signature.
WILLIAM T. SAUNDERS.
