IMPROVEMENT .IN SOFA-BEDSTEA-DS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,940, dated January 11, 1876; application filed May 21, 1875.

erence being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1. is a perspective view of the frame of a sofa constructed according to my inven tion; Fig. 2, the same as it appears when ar ranged as a bedstead; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5, detached views illustrating some of the features of my invention.

A is the bottom frame of the sofa, and is supported upon four legs, a, in the usual manner. The back B of the sofa is hinged to the bottom frame A at each end, and within the frame is a drawer, D, which can be moved in and out, as hereinafter described. The sofa has two arms, E and E, one of which, E, is made detachable, in order that, in conjunction with the center-piece F and the arm E, it may form a head-board for the bedstead. The back of the sofa is secured to these arms, in the present instance, by means of the sliding bolts 0 and flanged pins 1), the arm E being preferably secured to the bottom frame A by a flanged projectitm, d, and wedge-pin e. The 'tray or drawerl) is intended for the reception of bedclothes, &c., and is provided at the rear with feet a, and at each side, near its front end, with a roller, j, which runs upon arail, 9, secured to the side piece of the bottom frame A, and is slightly raised at the front, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the trayD is contained within the bottom of the sofa, as shown in Fig. 1, its front edge will be so lifted that it will be hidden from view by the front strip of the frame A.

When a sofa is desired, the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the arms being secured to the frame, and the tray arranged under the seat; but when it is desired to transform the sofa into a bedstead, the arm E is first released from the back, and the arm E entirely removed from the frame of the sofa. The tray D is then drawn .out, and the back B turned on its hinges until it rests in a horizontal position on the said tray. When in this position the projection 01 of the arm E is arms are secured to the center-piece bya pin,-

j, which crosses the opening of the said centerpiece, and bears against the pins b of the arms, as shown in Fig. 5, the flanged heads of the pins 1) effectually preventing the withdrawal of the arms. One side of the opening in the center-piece F is covered by a hinged strip, 1, which is slotted, and carries a sliding slotted plate, m, as shown in Fig. 4. When this strip is elevated, so as to cover the opening, the head of the pin j, which is flanged, projects through the slot, so that by depressing the plate m the movement of the pin j is'prevented, and the secure attachment of the arms to the center-piece insured.

I do not desire to claim, broadly, the combination of a detachable arm with the hinged back and main frame of a sofa-bed; but

-I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the frame A, back B, and arms E E with a center-piece, F, arranged snbstantially as described.

2. The center-piece F, in which are combined an opening for the reception of the ends of the arms E E, a flanged pin,j, extending across said opening, and the hinged and slotted strip l, carrying a sliding plate, m, all substantially as and for the purpose described.

.3. The combination of the movable tray-D and its rollers f with the rails g, secured to the side strips of the frame A, and having their front ends raised, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
