In a hoisting machine. the combination of a frame, parallel drinn shafts joiirnaled in said frame, winding drums loose on said shafts, a pair of gears on the respective drinn shafts, a transmission gear between said gears, independently operable clutch connections between the gears of said pair and the adjacent ends ofsaid drums, inlerineshing one of said Vintermeshing gears being fast with one of said drums and the other having a clutch connection to the other drinn, and a driving shaft geared tofone of said first-named pair of gears.

In a hoisting machine, the combination of a frame, a drinn shaft journaled in said frame, a winding drinn loose on said shaft, a gear keyed on said shaft opposite one end of said drinn, a clutch for connecting said gear to said drinn, a second gear fast on the otherend of said drinn, a second drinn shaft journaled in said frame parallel. with said first-named drinn shaft, a second'drinn loose on said second drinn shaft, a third gear keyed on said second drinn shaft, a clutch for connecting said third gear to said second drinn, an idler gear between said first-named gear and said third gear, a fourth gear loose on said second drum shaft intel-meshing with said second gear, a locking clutch slidable on said second drinn shaft adapted to couple said fourth gear to said second drinn, means for driving said first-named gear, and a pair of independently operable brakes for the respective winding drums.
