UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. GODFREY, 0F ELKHART, INDIANA.
10 @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN F. GoDFRnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhartand State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Hoist Mechanism, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to hoist mechanism whicli is capable of elevating and conveying loa s.
lOne object of the invention is t0 provide a simple, compact and efficient hoist which is rcapable of hoisting a load and simultaneously and independently conveying another load in either of a plurality of directions.
Another object is: to provide a relatively inexpensive but durable hoist having its parts arranged and controlled in a manner to meet the various requirements for successful commercial operation. y Y These and other objects are accomplished by means of the hoist mechanism disclosed on the accompanying sheets of drawings, ,in which Figure 1 is a' front elevation of hoist mechanism embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation ofthe same hoist mechanism; and, l
Fig. 4fis a detail side elevation showing the brake and release mechanism associated with clutch mechanism.
The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly `pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it
`will be noted that I` have disclosed hoist equipment mounted upon a suitable base 9, the hoist and conveying mechanism being operated by` an electric motor 10'mounted upon the base 9. ,The shaft 11 of the electric motor has secured thereto a. pinion 12 which meshes with and drives a relatively large gear 13 mounted upon one end of a shaft 14,
I -which carries concentrically with the gear 1'3 tively connected to a drum 20 around which a cable may be wound for hoisting purposes. Loosely mounted upon the shaft 14 near one end thereof isan outer clutch member 21 Specification of Letters Patent.

to which a gear 22 is secured, said gear 22 meshing with a relatively large gear 23 operatively connected to af conveying drinn 24 around which a cable may be wound, said conveying drum being positively driven in opposite or reverse directions by mechanism to be referred to hereinafter. Also loosely mounted upon the shaft 17 is another outer clutch member 25 to which is secured a gear 26 also meshing with the gear 23. It will be noted that in view of the fac-t that the gears 15 and 16 are in mesh with each other, shafts 14 and 17 are caused to rotate in opposite directions. Accordingly, gears 22 and 26, respectively, drive the gear. 23, and accordingly the reverse traveling drum 24,*in opposite directions. Also loosely mounted upon the shaft 14v is another outer clutch member 27 to which is secured the gear 18 for driving the hoisting drum 2O through gear 19. From the arrangement thus far described, it
ywill be understood that when the motor is in -erating member 28 having studs'29 which are engaged by a cone member 30 for eX- panding the inner clutch member .and causing the reversetraveling drum 24 to travel Vin one direction through the operation of the outer clutch member k21 and gears 22 and 23.
.ln a similar manner the outer clutch member 25 may be driven for driving the reverse traveling drum in an opposite direction throughthe 'operation of a cone member 31, and likewise the hoisting drum'may be operated through the outer clutch member 27 through the operation of a cone member 32. The reverse clutches are operative simultaneously so that when one vclutch is thrown in for -driving the traveling drum 24 in one direction, the other clutch is thrown out,
there also being a central neutral inoperative position. This is accomplished by actuating the cone members 30 and 31 in opyposite directions by a single control lever 33 which is pivotally connected at 34 to a supporting arm 35 secured to a frame member 36. The pivotal point 34 of the lever is between the` cone-shapedmembers 30 and 31 provided which actuates the cone member 32,
which is slidably mounted upon the shaft 14, said control lever 37 being pivotally mounted at 38 on the supporting arm 35. From the arrangement thus far described, it is apparent that the hoistinn drum may be operated whether or not the reverse traveling drum 24 is being operated, and likewise the reverse traveling drum may be operated in either direction whether or not the hoisting drum 2O is being operated. In other words, the hoisting and reverse traveling or conveying drums are capable of independent operation and also may be operated at the same time independently of each other.
The hoisting drum is provided with brake mechanism, including` Va brake band 39, which passes around and engages the outer clutch member 27, one end of said brake band 39 being anchored at the point 40 to an upstanding arm 41 secured to therbed plate 9, the other end of the brake band 39 being connected through a spring or resilient member 42 to a member 43 pivotally connected at 44 to a foot brake pedal 45, one end of the latter of which is pivotally connected at a point 46 to a projecting portion 47 of the arm 41. It is apparent, therefore, that when pressure is applied at the outer or free end of the foot pedal 45, the brake band 39 will be forced into intimate contact with the outer clutch member 27 for retarding or stopping the movement of the hoisting drum. The brake pedal 45 may be locked in any braking position through the operation of a pawl 48 pivotally connected at 49 to upstanding ears 50 on the pedal 45, said pawl having` a plurality of teeth 51, any one of which may engage under a lip 52 formed on a portion 53 of the arm or casting 41. The pawl may be released by depressing the free end 54 thereof. Similarly the reverse traveling drum 24 may be retarded or stopped by a brake includingva brake band 55 embracing the outer clutch member 25, one end of the brake band being anchored at the point 56 to an arm 57 secured to the bed plate 9 and the other end of the brake band 55 being yieldably connected to a foot pedal 58 through a connection 59. The brake may be locked in a braking position by means of a pawl 60, the teeth 61 of which coperate with the lip 62 at the outer end of the arm 57, Vsaid pawlr being pivotally mounted at 63 to upstanding` ears 64 on'thepedal 58. vThe pawl may be released by applying pressure to the foot portion 65 thereof.
Preferably the operating shafts 14 and 17 are rotatably mounted and supported inl Likewise the stationary shaft 67 which sup.
ports the hoisting drum 2O and reverse traveling drum 24 is mounted in the side frames 36 and 66. In this connection it will be appreciated that the drums 2O and 24 are loosely mounted on the supporting shaft 67, and in this arrangement are spaced from each other by a suitable spacing member 68. These drums 20 and 24 are located inwardly from the side frames 36 and 26 between their associated gears 19 and 23.
This arrangement of parts and the control thereof provide hoisting mechanism which is simple, compact, durable and efficient and which is adapted to meet all of the requirements for successful use.
