WATER JET Filed 1927 mil f I fill NT T. Q. CHRIT sr-Arss WATER JET.
Application filed August 17,1927. SerialNo. 213,557
My invention is a water jet of a selfcleansing type.
In water jets or devices for allowing flow-' ing of a small amount of water in amore or less steady stream, it hasbeen found that either the jet or some part of the device con nected to the jet becomes clogged with sediment or the like or with marine growths which obstruct and prevent the proper functioningof the jet. This is especially true in connection with sewer flushers in which usually the water feed pipe has'a valve to regulate the flow of water, in accordance withthe frequency with which thesewer is to be flushed, and some of which have an outlet jet, or the like. In this instance it has been found that the outlet of the water becomes clogged with anaccumulation of difierent marine-growths or by sediment, thuspreventing the-proper functioning of the jet and of. the sewer flushing mechanism, or-
other mechanism with which thejet is associated.
An object of my invention therefore, is to produce a water jet which, on account of having a moving elementtherein subjected to water pressure, keeps the water jet clear of marine growths, sediments or other obstructions, and hence lated flow.
In constructing my invention, I attach the water jet to the infeeding water pipe which may also have a regulating valve in the flushing chamber orat some other accessible place. The water jet comprises a hollow structure having a valve seat with a central bore in the seat to allow forward passage of water,
gives a properly reguand above the valve seat there is an agitation chamber in'wliich is located a'ball, this ball resting on the seat. There is a lateral orifice from this chamber which has a small port preferably on theinside, and this isen larged outwardly, giving a cone shaped ori fice with thelarge end outwardly. The ball is preferably inserted in the chamber by means of having a removable plug at the top. :In the actionof the water jet, the pressure of the water flowing through the bore at the valve seat agitates the ball and keeps a more or less continuous movementjof theball in the agitation chamber, thereby preventing accumulation of dirt, sediment or marine growths. I
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a vertical sectional view through an automatic sewer flusher, showing my water jet secured to the intake pipe.
tFigure 2 is a side elevation of the water e Figure 3 is a vertical section through the water et.
In the particular type of sewer flusher illustrating the use of my water jet, a pit 11 is formed by the side walls 12 and the base 13, with a floor 14 elevated above the base onthe 1,219,045 PATENT OFFICE.
TnomAsA. CARTER, or os ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
The water infeeding pipe for flushing 28 extends through the walls 12 and may have a hand controlled valve 29 thereon. This, valve as shown in theflushing chamber, it is to be understood, may be placed .in any suitable position to control the flow of water. An elbow 30 is indicatedas secured to the valve and is. turned upwardly, and to this is attached my water jet which is designated by the numeral 31. V r
This water jet comprises a tubular body32 screw threaded externally at-the outside on the lower-end 33, and having internal threads 34 atthe top for screwing a plug 35 therein. The tubular body has a partition structure 36 which is preferably coned inwardly as indicated at'37', and also having an inclined upper surface 38. There is a bore 39 through The construction illusthis partition and: the upper surface adjacent the bore may be regarded as a valve seat 40 on which a ball 41 formsa closure.
-The chamber in which the ball is located may be designated 'as an agitation chamber 42; An orifices?) is forined by'a port 44 of small bore,"and' this bore connecting with a conical outlet 45, forms an outlet from the agitation chamber 42 to'the flushing chamber 19. It is to be understood that the port 44 is made in different diameters of accurate dimensions, and that the various water jets are utilized with different automatic flushing systems in accordance with the flow'of water desired. I1
The manner of operation and functioning of the water jet is substantially as follows.
The inlet of water through the pipe 28 is regulated manually by the valve 29. This valve however, need not be so accurately adjusted aswhen no regulator isused; The water discharged from the valve being under pressure, shifts the ball .41 on its seat and causes this ball more or less to be agitated or bounce on the valve seat in the agitation chamber. The agitation chamber is always fullof water as the port 44 is of insufiicient diameter to flow the water out as fast as it passes through thebore 39. Therefore, on account of the substantially continuous movement of the ball 41, any sediment is maintained ag tated and marine growths are prevented, thus at all times giving a proper flow of water to fill the fiushingchamber 19 in the desired time intervals, and therefore flush the sewer as required. If it is found that thesewer flushes too often, a water jet may be installed having a smaller bore at the orifice, orif it does not discharge frequently enough, this port 44 may be enlarged or a water et sulostltuted with a larger opening. Thus an accurate control may be had of the flow-of water into the flushing system.
A characteristic feature of my invention is that the ball forms, in effect, a ball valve resting on the inclined seat or surface 38 and forming a closure for the bore 39. This ball must be bodily removed before liquid can flow into the agitation chamber 42, and such actionof bodily movement of the ball manifestly dislodges any dirt or sediment from theseat adjacent the bore 39. Inaddition, when the ball is subjected to violent movement it rubs and impinges againstthe inside of the port 44 thus dislodging any dirt therefrom. and allowing free flow of water; and also any small sediment in the water is maintained agitated so that it may readily flow out of the discharge port 44.
small jet orifice having an outlet port so small that it, is apt to be clogged by sediment. Therefore the ball rolling around in the agitation chamber dislodges this sediment.
*Another characteristic feature. of my invention is that the partition having the inlet 'bore has a downwardly inclined upper sur- 7 face so that the ball may; ;readily roll and the incoming flow of water causes the ball to 'roll'i'on different sides of the central inlet bore.
Various changes maybe made in the printion of the size of thecross sectional area of the ball, and the said inlet bore being. slightly larger than-the outlet port an d a closure for the tubular body. 7 I
' 2. water jet comprising in combination, a tubular body having a cylindrical inside sur face, a transverse partition at the bottom of the tubular body having'a downwardly and inwardly inclined surface terminating in a central small bore, a small orifice through the side of the body, said port being minute in comparison with the diameter of theinside of the tubular body, a large ball resting on the inclined surface of the partition, the diameter of the ball being but slightly lessthan that of the inside of the tubular body and a. closure for the upper end of said body;
3. A waterjet, comprising in combination a tubular body having an inside cylindrical surface, a transverse partition having an in wardly and downwardly inclined uppersurface terminating in a central smallbore, such bore being a small fraction of the diameter of the inside of the tubular body and'there being an outwardly and downwardly inclined surface on the lower part of the partition from the bore, small discharge port through one side of the tubular body terminating at the outsidein a cone-shaped orifice, the said port being minute in diameter compared with the diameter of they inside. of the tubular body, a ball adapted to rest on the, inclinedsurface of the partition,'said ball being but slightly less in diameter than thediamcter of'the .insideof the tubularbody and a closure plug for the top of said tubular'body. In testimony, whereof Ihave signed. my name to this specification.
