IMPROVEMENT IN STRAW-CUTTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 71,895, dated January 4, 1876; application tiled December 3, 1875.

To all whom-it may concern: I

Be it known that I, JOHN R. WHITTEMORE, 0f Ghicopee Falls, in the county of Halnpden and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful lrnprovements in Hay-Cutter; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. My invention relates to that class of feedcutters known as lever-cutters, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the devices whereby the cutting-knite is adjusted to any angledesired, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a feed-cutter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.- Fig. 3 is a detailed view of detached parts thereof.

A represents the ordinary feed-box, supported at its front end by a frame, B, and pro- This monthpiece is provided at one end with a projection, C, which extends downward below the lower edgeof the mouth-piece for a suitable distance. D representsthe lever-handle, to which the cutter or knife D is secured in the usual manner. At the inner end of the lever-handle D is formed a hub or collar, I), through which is passed an arbor, d, the lever being held fast to said arbor at any desired point by means of a set-screw,.a." The inner or rear end of the arbor d is placed in a hole, as, made in the projection, C of the mouth-piece, and the outer end of the arbor is placed in a hole, y, in a separate Z-shaped piece, E, which is fastened to the lower end of the projection O by a bolt, h, and nut i, as shown.. The arbor d has tenons or journals at its ends to enter the holes a: y, and said holes are made very slightly inclined downward and forward, so as to bring the edgeof the cutter or knife D close to the mouth-piece.

The lever-handle D is adjusted out and in on the arbor (1, as required, by simply loosening the set-screw a, movingthe lever on the arbor, and fastening the set-screw again.

By loosening the nut 11. the piece E may be turned to the right or left, so as to set the arbor at any angle desired, and thus secure the angular adjustment of the knife.

To prevent the piece E from slipping outward a set-screw, m is screwed up against its outer edge after it has been adjusted in its place, said set-screw passing through an ear,

n, extending forward from the projection G.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combinationof the mouth-piece 0, having inclined opening 09 and projection O, the angular adjustable piece E, having inclined opening y, with the lever-handle D, having hub b, arbor d, with tenons at its ends, and the set-screw a, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.

2. The set-screw m, passing through the car a on the p ojection U, in combination with the 1 adjustable piece E, for the purposes herein set forth.
