Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE S. HOXIE, OF RAISIN CENTRE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN PLOW-COLTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [1 1,822, dated May 16, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE S. HOXIE, of Raisin Centre, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plow-Oolters; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective; Fig. 2, a rear view, and Fig. 4 a side elevation.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure. A
The nature of this invention relates to a colter for a plow provided with a curved mold-board and share, so that when the plow is in operation the mold-board and share will entirely out off a beveling piece of ground from offthe overlapping furrow and deposit it in the bottom of the preceding furrow, where it is afterward covered by the plow, thus completely burying all the stubble, turf, and other surface-matter.
The invention is designed as an improvement upon my plow-colter for which Letters Patent were issued to me on the 5th day of May, 1868; and it consists, first, in a share secured to said mold-board and colter, asand for the purpose set forth; and second, in the combination of said mold-board with said share and colter, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings,Arepresents my colter-bar, provided with a hatchet-faced vertical cutter, B. This cutter mayQbe made whole with the colter, as more fully shown in Fig. 3, or, for convenience in sharpening or of being replaced when required, it may be made separately and secured to said colter in any convenient way.
0 is a curved mold-board, so curved and secured to one side of the colter as to throw the earth forward. It is attached to said colter by means of bolts 0, passing through the flange b on said mold-board and the colter.
A share, a, is secured to the lower front edge of the mold-board by means of the bolt 6, and its inner end is entered in the slot d in the colter, and is thereby steadied in its op- 1 eration.
The opposite end of the share is bent upward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. If deemed preferable, the end {of the share which enters the slot d may be provided with a bolt, and secured to the colter by means of it.
The colter-bar may be attached to the plowbeam by the ordinary clevis, or in any other convenient manner, and at any angle desired.
In the operation of this device the colter B performs the usual office of a sward-cutter, its
employed. The share a passes under the sward, the bent outward end cutting upward through said sward, leaving, as it were, a ribbon, which is thrown forward and turned over by the curved mold-board G into the bottom of the preceding furrow, where it is afterward covered by the plow.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The share a, constructed, attached, and operating as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the curved moldboard 0 with the share a, when each is constructed as described, and attached to acolterbar, as and for the purposes set forth.
HORACE S. HOXIE.
