In -my improved constructiony it `will be provided with a longitudinally extending bore which is filled With liquid, herein oil, and in WhichV a piston 39 is slidably mounted and secured to a longitudinally extending rod 40 suitably secured to the head block 19 by means of a collar member 41 which engages an annular tia-nge 42 formed on the upper end ofv the iod.Y Herein it will further be noted that this rod 40 passes through sintable packing or cup washers 43 carried by the piston 11 which prevent leakage o't tluid lbetween the cylinder bore 88 andthe aircyl- .inder 10,` while the piston 39 is providedl `with packing or cup Washers 44 which prevent leakage of fluid from one side of the piston to the other. Bypass ports 4e and 46 areformed in the rod 40 which permit oil to pass to the opposite sides of the piston 39 under the control ot an automatic control `valve generally designated 47. This automatic control valve comprises a body portion 48 grooved at 49 and having a head 50 movable in a pre-ssure't-ight chamber 51, which is closed by a plug 52 through which a plunger 53 is slidable having a push button 54 formed on its outer end which is adapted Vto be manipulated bythe operator at certain times during the drilling operation.

In the operation ot' my improved mechanism, it will be noted that the points 18 or' the foot piece 16 are placed against a stationary abutment a suitable distance from the working face, the operator holding the drill in positionV at this time by means of the handle 21. The throttle valve 34 is then .manipulated admitting pressure iuid to the feeding mechanism, bringing the bit of the drill steel 7 adjacent the work. Pressure fluid is then admitted to the drilling motor 2 and rotation motor 22 thereby ausing the. drill steel to be pe-reussively aetuated and rotated. It will herein be, noted that at this time the valve 47 is' in its wide open position, as shown in Fig. 2, with the oil bypassing from the boi'e 38 above the piston 3l) through the passage 45, the groove in the valve, and the passage 46 communicating with the bore 3S below the piston 39. The operator then presses on the push button 54, cutting oil' communication between the bypass ports Al5, 46, preventing relative movement between the piston 11 and the cylinder l) and permitting the spotting ot' the hole. After the hole is spotted the push button is released and the spring 5S torees the automatic control valve 47 again to its wide open position, the pressure in the inlet side ot the rotation mot-or being relatively low at this time, due to the restricted size ot the inlet port 36 and the comparatively rapid fluid consumption of the motor 22, and permitting the oil te tlow from thc upper part ot the chamber 38 to the lower part ot this chamber below the piston 39. Il: soft or sticky drill.- ing is encountered, the rotation of the drill steel is resisted, thereby causing the rotation motor to slow down to a certain extent and building up the pressure in the inlet chamber 37 which passes through the port 60 to the right hand side of the head 56 of the valve 47, causing it to move slightly to the left Yl'rom the position shown in Fig. 2 and eutting down the amount oi oil liow through the bypass passage 46, consequently slowing down the feed. As the resistance to rotation increases, the amount of oil llow through the port 46 is diminished. If a cavity oriopening is encountered, the oil cylinder 3S has a dashpot action on the feed which prevents an excessive rate of feed and thereby pre` vents the consequent sticking or jammin of the drill steel in the hole. It is obvious that the opera-tor may control the rate ol' feed at will by the suitable manipulation ot the push button 54 varying the. oil flow through the bypass ports 45 and 46. I
As a result ot' my invention, it will be noted that I have provided an improved pneumatically fed drilling mechanism having improved automatic controlling mechanism which controls the rate of feed in aecordance with the nat-ure of' the drilling encountered and prevents excessive ralesI of feed when a` so'lt spot or cavity is encountered while the strength ol" the feed ma)7 also be manually*controlled at will by the operator. These and other advantages will he clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
lVhile I have in this application specili- Vcally described one formv which my invention may assume inlpractice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the inlit) vention may be modified and` embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure a rotary motor for rotating said tool, feed' ing means for said tool, and hydraulic resistance means responsive to pressure conditions within said rotary motor for controlling said feeding means and including a displaceable fluid body resisting feeding movement of said feeding means.

In drilling apparatus, a drilling tool a rotary motor adapted to rotate said tool, feeding means for said tool., and hydraulic resistance means responsive to the resistance to rotationrof said tool for automatici'illy controlling said feeding means and including a fluid resistance body displaeeable upon movement of said feeding means.

In a drilling mechanism, a drilling motor adapted to percussively actuate a drill steel, mcans for rotating the drill steel, pressure actuated means for feeding the steel forward, and pressure fluid means responsive to the resistance to rotation for automatically resisting said forward feeding means operative to provide, in accordance with 'variations in resistance, variations in the rate of forward feed without .interrupting the same and including a fluid resistancebody displaeeable upon feeding movenlen't of said feeding means.

In a drilling mechanism, a drilling motor, a rotation motor, feeding means for said drilling motor, pressure fluid means for controlling said. feeding means and including a fluid resistance body displaceable upon feeding movement of said feeiiling means, and autmnatic means resijionsive to the resistance to rotation for olierating said pressure fluid cont rollin means.
l0. In a drilling mechanism, a drilling motor adapted to operate on a drill steel,
pressure fluid feeding means therefor, indef pendent means for rotating the drill steel, and means responsive to the resistance to rotation for automatically controlling said feeding means while the feeding pressure in the feeding means remains substantially constant and including a fluid resistance body resisting feeding movement of said feeding means and displaceable upon feeding movement of said feeding means.
ll. In a drilling mechanism of the hammer type, the combination of means for rotating the drill steel, means for feeding the steel forward, and means controlled by the resistance to rotation for automatically controlling said forward feeding meaus and for preventing an excessive rate of forward feed when the resistance to rotation is removed, said automatic means being operative to provide, in accordance with variations in resistance, variations in the rate of forward feed without interrupting the same.

In combination, work performing means con'iprising a rotary motor, feeding means therefor, and cont-rolling means for said feeding means comprising a fluid displaced upon movement of said feeding means and automatic means eontrolleifl by said motor for interrupting displacenmnt entirely or providing different continuous rates of displacement.

In a drillingr mechanism, a drillingr Amotor, feeding means therefor, pressure fluid resistance means disposed Within said feeding means for controlling movement thereof and including a fluid resistance body displaceableA upon feeding movement of said feeding means, and means including a push button for manually controlling said last mentioned means.

In a drilling mechanism, a drilling motor of the hammer type, a .motor actuated by pressure fluid for Arotating a drill steel, pressure fluid feeding means including a cooperating cylinder and piston, pressure fluid means-for resisting said feeding means neluding a displaceable fluid resistance body opposing feeding movement and an automatic controlling mechanism for said lluid resistance body responsive to variations of pressure Within said rotation motor.
17. In a rock drilling mechanism, a drilling motor adapted to actuate a drill steel, means for rotating the drill steel, means for feeding the drillistcel, and hydraulicI controlling means including means responsive to the resistance to drill steel rotation for automatically controlling said feeding means and comprising a displaeeablc fluid resistance body opposing feeding movement of said feeding means.
18.In col'nbination, a drilling motor adapted to actuate a drill steel, rotation means for the drill steel, feeding means for the steel, and means for controlling said feeding means comprising a liquid variably displaced upon variations of resistance to rotation of the drill steel and means responsive to the resistance to steel rotation for providing varied continuous 'ates of liquid displacement.
