This invention relates to improvements in pumps, such as oil pumps or the like, and especially in the type of pumps which have an outlet nozzle and a cooperating drain pipe movable into and out oit receiving position with said nozzle, for the purpose oil catchin g the remaining drops which drain trom the nozzle after use and returning said oil to the containing receptacle. My :invention relates particularly to an improved type of nozzle and drain pipe in which advantages are realized hereto-tore unknown.
One of the objections encountered in devices heretofore employed, has been that the movable drain pipe coming into a receiving position relative to the nozzle, contacts drops ot oil or other dispensed liquid hanging from the `end thereof, which oil runs down the outer surface oi the drain pipe. llVhen it is attempted to increase the clearance between the end oit the drain pipe and the nozzle to prevent this, the drain pipe is subject to having moisture from rain an'd dirt iind its way into its opening, which is detrimental to the oil or liquid contained in the pump.
Another objection found in devices hereto fore employed, has been that leakage occurs between the cap and the pipe ot the drain pipe which is caused by oil or other liquid being thrown to the walls ot' the pipe when the pumping commences, ].iarticularly in cases where air is contained in the pipes and a sputtering and sl'iitting action is had when plnnping starts.
The principle objectsI of my invention are to provide an improved nozzle and drain pi pe in pumps o'if the general character dcscribed above, which are t'ree .from the above objections, and which embody certain improved structural features hercinat'ter more clearly pointed out.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed in the accompanying sheet of drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation ot' a pump embodying a nozzle and a movable drain pipe constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view ot the end of the drain pipe and the cooperating nozzle constructed in accordance with my invention;

The various novel features ot the inven tion will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Reterring to the drawing, it will be noted that my invention is illustrated, applied to a pump designated generally 10, having a pump cylinder 11, and a handle 12 mounted on a container 18 shown in a fragmentary manner in Figure 1. Mounted on theopposite end of the pump is an outlet nozzle 14. having 'an outlet pipe 15 and a protective shirt 16 overhanging the outlet nozzle. At the lower end of the pump is an ott-set pipe inlet 17 containing at its upper end a bearing and a tortional spring not shown, but which constitutes means by which the S-shaped pipe 18 may be rotated in its seatin the upper end ot the pipe 17 and resiliently held by the spring in such a manner that it is normally positioned in receiving alignment with the end ot the nozzle 1l'. i Pumps ot this general character are old and well known in the art, and it is understood in operation that when it is desired to dispense liquid t'rom the pump, that the pipe-18 is 2 .looking in the di merely engaged manually and is thrust in a direction away from the end oil the nozzle against the opposition ol the spring, an extent suiiicient to permit a receiving container to be placed under the nozzle. Vhen su'fticient liquid is dispensed the operator merely removes the receiving container and permits the pipe 18 to resume its normal. position which in receiving alignment with the nozzle, this action taking place under the influence ot the spring which turns the pipe 18 inits bearing mounting.
Referring particularly to Figure 2, it will be noted that the skirt 16 is provided with a cut-away opening 19 and at apoint diametrically opposite inwardly of the outer circumference, has a depending lug 20. The drain pipe in the structure shown in Figure 2 comprises a pipe such as the pipe 18, having a cap 21 mounted on the upper' end thereof, and held by any suitable means such as the screw 22. rfhe cap has an opening 23 through itsupper end in which is positioned a sleeve 24; having its'lower end depending therefrom and positioned within the sleeve 18 in a manner to project a considerable distance below and cover the jointure between the cap and the pipe. The upper end of the pipe 24 projects beyond the cap as at 25V and has provided at one side thereof,a Vcut-awayportion 26.
Attention is directed to the fact that the opening 19, and the skirt 16, the depending lug on'the skirt and the opening 26 in the sleeve 2f are all positioned in a line which coincides with the path of movement of the drain pipe 1S when it is moved out of and into cooperative relationship with the nozzle.
- These features are clearly shown with reference to Figure 3.
'In Figure 5, I have shown a modified form of my invention, many features of which, however, are similar to those of the form shown in Figure 2 and the parts which are similar bear similar reference characters.
The difference resides primarily in the fact that the upper end of the cap 27 is positioned flush with the end of the nozzle 15 instead of proj ectingslightly above as in the case of the other form. Als'o,the portion of the drain pipe structurewhich cooperates with the nozzle is the upper projecting sleeve 28 of the cap 27 itself, rather than an inserted Ysleeve 24, as
disclosed in the other figure. In this modification, a sleeve 29 is provided seated tightly within the opening in the cap and having sufficient length to cause it to project into a pipe 18' sufficiently to amply cover the cinture between the pipe and the cap.
The vadvantages of my improved invention are manifest when the structures are fully understood, attention being directed to the fact that' sleeves 24. and 29 in the two forms prevent anyy oil that may be thrown onto the internal walls ofthe sleeve and cap, fromleaking between the cap and the pipe and thence downthe outside of the drain pipe 18. In addition, the provision for a 'cut- away portion 26 and 26 in the two modifications eliminates the objection of oil being scraped olf of the end of the nozzle by the upper outside edge of the Adrain pipe in its movementinto a receiving position, and oil running down the outside of the drain pipe as a result thereof.
' In addition to the elimination of these obj ections, thelug 2O pending from the skirt portion, whereby moisture and dirt are prevented from being blown or finding their way into thedraiii pipe 1S. Attention is directed to the fact, that thelug 2t) has another valuable function, in that it forms a stop for the moving drain pipe', acting to arrest the drain pipe in such position, that the nozzle and drain pipe are in alignment and the nozzle is held 'i y free from Contact with the walls of the drain pipe. This is clearly illustrated in Figures 3 and G, and makes a great improvement in that it eliminates the necessity of using the end of the nozzle as a stop for the moving drain pipe which function would be apt to result in damage to the nozzle, and it further assures that all lubricant or other dispensed liquid collected by gravity on the end of the nozzle, will be directed down thedrain pipe 1S free from the walls and without contacting the upper end of the pipe with the undersirable result of having lubricant on the outside thereof.
The opening 19 in the skirt permits the movement of the drain pipe into its receiving position with the provision of, throughout a considerable circumference, a skirt of increased length which further protects the openings and 26', and the upper end of the receiving pipe.
It is to be understood that my invention is applicable to any device where the same problems of draining fluids are encountered.
I claim:
1. In a pump, the combination of a relatively movable nozzle and a drain pipe, said drain pipe comprising a pipe, a cap and a sleeve positioned in said pipe and cap, and covering the jointure therebetween, said .sleeve extending beyond said cap and having a cut-away portion adapted to underly said d' nozzle, in its path of movement into and out of cooperation with said drain pipe.
2. A pump, a relatively movable nozzle. and drain pipe, a cap fitting on the end of said drain pipe and a sleeve positioned in said cap having a portion projecting beyond the jointure between said cap and pipe.
3. In a pump a relatively movable nozzle and drain pipe, a cap fitting on the end of said drain pipe having an opening therethrough, a sleeve tightly fitted in said opening, said Sleeve extending into said pipe and covering the jointure of the `said pipe and cap.
In a. pump a relatively movable nozzle and drain pipe, a cap lifting on the end of said drain pipe and a sleeve positioned in said cap having a portion projecting beyond the jointure between said end cap, said sleeve being extended in the opposite direction beyond said cap to provide a portion adapted to cooperate with said nozzle..
5. In a pump a relatively movable nozzle and drain pipe, a cap mounted on said drain pipe and means positioned in said cap and pipe to cover the jointure therebetween.
