WINDOW SASH.
Application filed December 1, 1927. Serial No. 286,991.
The invention relates to window sashes, and improved means for adjusting the same, having means for revolving the window panels or sashes into different positions,
whereby both sides of the lass may be conveniently cleaned from -t e inside of the building without danger to the operator, and whereby the sashes may be raised and lowered at will without interfering with 10 eachother, nor'with the window shades,
draperies, and curtains; affording perfectrevolved. The said inner sash frame mem'-' ventilation of an apartment or room in a building; and the object thereof is to provide improved construction and' means 16 whereby the above functions or results may be obtained. With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
20 The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the --accom-.
panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desig-' nated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an inside view of a window provided with my improvement orimprovements;
- Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of 3 Fig. 1; I
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 4 is'a section on the line 4-40f Fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown in Fig.- 1, a window frame 01 composed of vertical side members a and top and bottom-transverse members a and a', all of-.which parts may be of the 40 usual or any preferred construction, and
. mounted in said frame are the bottom sash b and top sash 0, and both are composed of outer frame members 6 and 0 respectively, and inner revolving frame members 6 and a respectively.
The bottom sash b is shown partly raisedin order to show more clearly the invention.-
As it has been stated above, it consists of a main outer sash frame 72 and an inner sash frame member I), and this comprises an inner part b and an outer part 6 between which the transparent panel I) is mounted, and these parts are connected at intervals with the screwse. memberb is pivoted centrally of its sides as shown at b to the outer sash frame inem- The inner sash frame.
understood, and as it is shown in Fig. 2,
where the bottom sash 12 is shown partly her 6 may be locked to the outer sash frame member '6 when in its closed position by means of a suitable looking or securing-device 7" shown in Fig. 3,and consisting of a pin pushed upwardly with a key, from the outer frame member I) to the inner sash frame member I), v
The outer sash frame members I) and comprise as shown in details in Figs. 3 and 4, a reenforcing light strip of metal 9 with a rubber cushion h on which the inner sash frame members b and 0 respectively adjust themselves freely, smoothly, and tightly, and the cold air from the exterior can notenter the room when the window is closed. In
. Fig. 4, it will be noted that the edges or faces of the outer side members B and inner members B3 are straight whereas the top and bottom transverse or horizontal portions of the sashes provide a slightly concave-convex face or edge so that an air tight joint is pro-- duced.
' The upper sash. c is-also composed of a main outer sash member a and an inner sash member 0 pivoted centrally of itssides to the main outer sash: member 0 at 0 and this pivotal connection, or the construction thereof, is the same as that employed in connection with the bottom sash and shown in details in Fi s. 3 and 4, and the inner sash member 0 o the top window sash may be use of any particular material in the construction or mounting of the sashes.
With m improvement the supplemental sash mem ers f) and c -which carry the of the windows.
transparent panels may be freely swung both forwardly and backwardly, inwardly and outwardly into any desired position, and. the thorough cleaning of the transparent panels by an operator in the room or compartment is thus facilitated without danger to said operator.
I am aware that many types of revolving window-sashes exist prior to my invention. Aside from their complicated and elaborated metallic devices showing that they are specially destined for windows of metallic construction, said sashes have the disadvantage of interfering with the shades and curtains when the sashes are opened or'rather revolved on their pivots for the purpose of aerating the room, such sashes pivoting directly on the easements or other fixed parts Therefore these sashes are not practical and suitable for dwelling houses and consequently people prefer the use of sash windows having their sashes raised and lowered with the aid of cords and pulleys. But in their turn those sashes while they do not interfere with the shades and ourtains, have the dangerous disadvantage that the outside of their panels can not be con-' veniently cleaned from the inside of the building without da-nger'to the operator and people are obliged to sit or stand on the out side narrowsills of the windows, in order to clean the outside of the window panels, and man accidents occur.
W ile the window'shown with my draw ing and my present specification has its sashes both revolving and at the same time moving up and down, and thus attains the advantage desired.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. 1. In a window, the combination with a frame, sliding sashes for said frame, each of said sashes comprising an outside frame member having an interior groove along its sides, top and bottom, a reenforcing strip and a cushion positioned in said groove, an inside fsash frame in engagement with said reenforcing strip and cushion, pivots connecting said outside frame member and said inside sash frame, said pivots passing through the reenforcing strip and cushion and means for locking said inside sash frame to the outside member. i
2. In "a window, the combination with a frame, sliding sashes for said frame, each of said sashes comprising an outside frame member having an interior groove along its sides, top and bottom, a reenforcing strip and a cushion substantially semi-circular in cross section positioned in said groove, an inside sash frame in engagement with said reenforcing strip and cushion, pivots connecting said outside frame member and said inside sash frame, said pivots passing through the reenforcing stri and cushion and means for locking said inside sash frame to the out side member. 3. In a window, the combination with a frame, sliding sashes for said frame, each of said sashes comprising an outside frame member having an interior groove along its sides, top and bottom, a flat recnforcing strip forming a seat and a resilient cushion held by said strip within said groove, an inside sash frame in engagement with said 'reen-' forcing strip and cushion, pivots connecting said outside frame member and sald inside sash frame, said pivots passingthrough the reenforcing strip and cushion and means for locking said 1ns1de sash frame to the outside member.
frame, sliding sashes for said frame, each of said sashes comprising an outside frame member having an interior groove along its sides, top, and bottom, a flat reenforcing strip I 4. In a window, the combination with a;
forming a seat and a resilient cushion held by said strip within said groove an inside sash frame in engagement with said'i reenforcing strip and cushion, horizontalbolts connecting said outside frame member and said inside sash frame, said pivots passing through the reenforcing strip; and cushion and means for locking said inside sash frame to the outside member.
5. In a window, the combination with a frame, sliding sashes for said-frame, each of said sashes comprising an outside frame member having straight sides edges and top and bottom concave edges and formed with p sash frame, said pivots passing through the said strip and said cushion and me'ans for locking said inside sash frame to the outsidemember.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 25th day of November, 1927..
