This invention relates to improvements in dyeing machinery and more particularly in some of its features to improvements in drive mechanism for dyeing machines of the rotary reel type.
It is a general object of the inventionto improve and perfect dyeing machines of the class mentioned and drive mechanism therefor, so as to provide a simple, efficient and sturdy construction which is economical from standpoints of production and operation. i
A further object is the provision, for ma- :hines of the classmentioned, of an improved unitary self-contained power transmission mechanism which is easily placed in position or removed, and the parts whereof are readily accessible for inspection, repair, adjustment, etc. i
A further object is the provision of an improved drive mechanism for machines of the class mentioned and having an improved manual drive associatedtherewith for ad justment of the machine through a comparatively limitedrange when the power drive is ii'ioperative. j
A further object isthe provision of an improved unitary power transmitting gear box for laundry machines or the like.
Qther objects will be :in part pointed out in connection with the following detailed. description of an illustrative but preferred embodiment of the invention and will bein part obvious in connection therewith.
The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts,'whieh will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated inthe claims.

The reel is mounted for rotation within,
the tank, being supported at one end by means of a trunnion seated within an open top bearing 29 supported by the end frame 7 13, and at the opposite end by means of a supporting trunnion shaft 30' which is removably but non-rotatably seated in the end or trunnion plate of the reel. The shaft 30 not only provides the driving connection for the reel but supports it upon the gear box as more fully pointed out below. An inlet pipe 31 is provided for the introduction of dye liquid and admin outlet is provided at 32. Heating fluidysuch as steam, may be introduced-through:anozzle 33 shown as disposed near the bottom of the tank.
I For driving the reel in carrying outthe dyeing process, power transmission connections are provided including ,a gear train housed within agear casing 34 and forming a unltary drive mechanism or gear box for transmitting power from a driving motor to the rotary reel. From the foregoing it will be clear that the reel is given a reciprocatory rotary motion through the gear train described when the motor is set in operation. ,Due to the irreversible driving gear train provided by the wormo lfand cooperating.worm wheel e8 as describedyit would. bedi'liicult or impossible to turn the reel by. direct application of turning force or moment thereto to bring it into proper position for reception or removal of'goods. However the hand wheel elti connected directly to the worm shaft offers a convenient means for accomplishment of this adjustment through relatively small angles when the motor is inactive. This irreversible driving mechanism prevents accidental turning of the drum as for example during loading or unloading when there may be considerable unbalane of the gear train is not interrupted by removal of the gear casing cover 37 thus permitting inspection of the parts when in operation.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made with out departing from the scope thereof,it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific: features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is:
1.. In a machine of the character described, in combination, a receiving reel, a frame for rotatably mounting said reel, a power transmission gearbox having a gear train for transmitting; power from a source to said reel and including a worm shaft mounted in the gear box, said gear box forming a selfcontained unit removable from or attachable to said frame as a unit, said worm shaft having extensions at opposite ends external of the gear box, one ofsaid ivorinsliaft extensions being positioned for connection to a source of power and the other of said extensions having a manual operating member for adjusting said reel when the power drive is inactive.
In a machine of the character described, in combination, a receiving reel, a frame for rotatably mountingrsaid reel, a power transmission gear box with a casing having a removable cover, a gear train having gear train members for transmitting power from a source to said reel and being mounted for operation in said casing independently of presence or absence of said cover, said gear box forming a selfcontained unit removable from or attachable to said frame as a unit, and a trunnion shaft mounted in said casing and connected to said gear train and contacting at its outer end with said casing cover.
3. In a machine of the character descri ed, in combination, a receiving reel, a frame for rotatably mountin said reel, a power transmission gear box with a casing havinga re movable cover, a gear train having gear train members for transmitting power from a source to said reel and being mounted for operation in said casing independently of presence or absence of said cover, said gear box forming a self-contained unit removable from and attachable tosaid frame as a unit, and a trunnionshaft mounted in said casing and connected to said gear train and contacting at its outer end with said casing cover, said gear train including a worm shaft having extensions at opposite ends external of the gear box one of saidworm extensions be ing positioned for transmitting power from i a source and the other of said extensionshavmg a manual operating member for ad iusting the reel when the power drive is inactive.

In a dyeing machine or the like, in combination, a tankhaving end framesand Wall plates secured to the inner faces there of, a. reel withinsaid tank, a bearing within said tank securedto one of said end frames for supporting one end of said reel, a unitary gear box attached to the outside of one of said frames and having connections for transmitting power to said reel from a power source, said power transmitting connections including a drive shaft extending through one of said wall platesand detach ably connected to an end of said reel for sup porting and driving the same, said gear box havlng a cletacl'iable cover and providing a housing entirely enclosing said power trans mitting connections, saiddrive shaft contacting at its outer end with said cover to retain the shaft against outward longitudinal movement, and an oil and moisture proof connection between said gear box and wall plate and surrounding said drive shaft.
7. said gear box; with its power transmission connections forming a self-contained structure adapted to be removed or placed in operative position as a unit.

In drive mechanism for textile treating machinery, the'combination with arotary' reel and a driving motor, of a gear train between said reel and motor, including a worm and worm wheel whereby the gear train is irreversible through turning moment applied to said reel, and hand operating member connected to said worm to move the reelwhenthe motor is inactive. 7 r 9. In a drive mechanism for textile ing machinery, the combination with a rotary rcel and a driving motor, of a gear train between said reel and motor including i a worm and worm wheel, a hand operating member connected to said worm to move the reel when themotor is inactive, and connections between saidworm wheel and the reel including a pitman rod and a toothed sector for transmitting oscillatory movement to the reel.

In a 7 drive mechanism for textile treating machinery, the combination with a rotary reel and a driving motor, of a unitary gear boxhaving mounted therein a driving gear train including a worm and worm wheel whereby the'gear train is irreversible through turning moment applied to said reel, an extending worm shaft adapted for connection to said motor, said gear box also having a shaft adapted for supporting connection to the rotary reel and being attachable in position on the machine asa unit for power connectlon with the motor and reel, and a hand operating member connected to said worm shaft for operating said reel when said motor is inactive.

In a dyeing machine, in combination, a tank having an end frame with frame members having smooth inner and flanged outer faces, a tank wall plate in supporting con tact with said inner smooth faces and having a laterally flexible part spaced in the plane thereof from the said frame members, attaching blocks upon saidfianged faces, a power transmission unit including a gear train and a casing for entirely enclosing said gear train for operation in an oil bath, lugs on said casing for attaching it in operative position on the end frame and positioned to contact with said attaching blocks, a rotary receiver drum within said tank, and a supporting and driving trunnion shaft for said drum mounted in said gear train casing and extending through said wall plate at said laterally flexible part thereof.
12, In a textile treating machine, in com. bination, a power transmission unitattached to the end'frame of the machine and including a gear train and a casing entirely enclosing said gear train, said transmission unit being removable as a unit from operative position on theend frame, support ing. studs for members of said gear train supported at one end by said casing and having opposite free ends, and a cover plate overlying the free ends of said studs and being removable without disturbing the operative relation of said gear train.

In a textile treating machine, in com bination, a power transmission unit attached to the end frame of the machine and including a gear train and a" casing entirely enclosing said gear train, said transmission unit being removable as a unit from operative position .On the end frame, an operating shaft carried by said gear train casing and extending within the tank of the machine, an oscillatory toothed sector included in said gear train for driving said operating shaft, and a pitman connected to said sector and to another member of said gear rain for imparting oscillatory movement to said operating shaft.

In a textile treating machine, in combination, a power transmission unit attached to the end frame of the machine and including a gear train and a casing entirely enclosing said gear train, said transmission unit being removable as a unit from operative position on the end frame, an operating shaft carried by said gear train casing and extending within the tank of the machine,
an oscillatory toothed sector included in said gear train for driving said operating shaft, a pitman connected to said sector and to another member ofs'aid gear train for imparting oscillatory movement to said sector, supporting studs for members of saiclgear train supported at one end by said casing and having opposite free ends, and a cover plate overlying'the free ends of said studs and being removable Without disturbing the oper ative relation of said gear train.
15. In a textile treating machine, in combination, a power transmission unit attached to the end frame of the machine and including a gear train and a casing entirely enclosing said gear train, said transmission unitbeing removable as a unit from operative position on the end frame, an operating shaft carried by said gear train casing and extending within the tank of the machine, an oscillatory toothed sector included in said gear train for driving said operating shaft, a pitman connected to said sector and to an other member of said gear train for imparting oscillatory movement to said sector, said gear train including a Worm in mesh with a worm wheel, and a Worm shaft rotatably mounted in said gear train casing and having an extension for driving connection to a motor and a second extension for hand operation of said Worm.
