Referring now to that embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, 1-0 in dicates a'support, in this case a washing machine tub comprising a tub 10 supported on upright legs 11, 11, which are held in proper spaced relation by diagonally-aiiranged cross-bars 11?, 11'. Thetiib is provided with a top' comprising spaced, parallel, fixed marginal parts 12, 12, a fixed marginal part 12", arranged at right. angles to the firstnamed marginal parts, and a lid 12" hinged -to the fixed marginal part. 12 and adapted to close the space between the parallel marginal parts 12, 12.

The spur-gear 19, shaft 17, and beveled gears 18, and 16 are protected by a gear case 27 which is formed to inclose said arts, as clearly shown in the drawings, an is provided with laterally disposed, horizontally spaced pairs of apertured lugs 27, by means of which it is secured to the hinged top of the tub. Said gear casing prevents the clothes of the operator from becoming entangled in the gearing.

The shaft 28 has rigidly secured to it a pulley 31. The pulley 31 is adapted to be driven from a suitable source of power and, as shown here in, said pulley is connected by a belt 32 to the driving pulley 33 of an electric motor 34 suppor ed below the tub body. Said motor is carried on a baseboard 35 secured in the angle of the cross-braces 11, 11 that brace the tub legs apart.
A pinion 36 is keyed to the shaft 28 adjacent the pulley 31, said pinion meshing with a lar e gear 37 fixed to a shaft :37 that extends parallel to the main driving shaft 28 above the tub top and has bearingnear its ends in the plates 29 and 30. On
the face of the gear 37 is provided a crankpin 37 with which the pitman 24 has pivotal connection so that the continuous rotation of the gear 37 in one direction will impart through the pitman 24-. a reciprocating, longi tudinal, sliding movement to-the rack-plate .21.. The pinion 36 and the gear 37 are protected by a casing or shell 37* which ineloses them, and is attached to the bearing plate 29.
The gearing described herein is simple in construction and eflicient in operation. Allofthe gearing is ampl protected so that it is particularly adapts le for use in power washing machines which are usually open ated by women andmust, therefore, be es-.. pecially free ,from-the ossibility of cloth-- mg or parts of the b0 ybeing caught between engaging gear teeth.
By reason ofithe arrangement and construction of the: hinges of the lid, as described an increased clearance at the end of thedoll lid is in open position so that ample room is afiorded for passing the clothes from the tub to the wringerwhen a wringer is used.
The flange 20 on the bearing plate 20 under the reciprocating raek-plate 21 makes itpossible to thoroughly oil the bearings of saidracleplate,without danger of theoil dripp ng intonth'etub since said flange 2O will retain the oilon the bottom plate 20.
