Description

June 11, 1929.. J. TOOLE 1.717427- BO0T FOR vsE BY masks. Filed Nov; 2a, 1927 IN VENIUR Patented June 11, 1929.
@TATES JOHN TOOLE, OF'KIRKLAND LAKE, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BOOT FOR USE BY MINERS.
Application filed November 28, 1927, Serial No. 286,332, and in Canada August 19, 1927.
This invention relates to rubber boots, and more particularly to that-type of boot which extends to the wearers hip and which is particularly adapted for use by miners in sinkabout ten days in this class of work, and, of
course, while only one boot is worn out both must be discarded even when both boots have good soles and uppers. The object of my in vention is to provide a boot for use in the class of work mentioned above which will stand the extra wear without being materially increased in weight and which may be made at slight extra expense. A further object of my invention is to provide a boot which will protect the foot of the miner when using a shovel in the above described manner.
I attain my objects by providing a reinforcing pad or reinforcing pads of rubber or other material across the instep of the boot.
The construction is hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved boot Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross section thereof;
Fig. 4: is a front elevation of an alternative form; and
Fig. 5 is a front elevation of another alternative form.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is a hip rubber boot of ordinary construction provided with a sole 2, a heel 3 and an upper 4- and a leg portion 5.
The reinforcing pad 6, which may be of any suitable material vulcanized on the boot or formed by increasing the thickness of the fabric thereof, reinforces the outer side of the upper from the point of the toe to a place adjacent the front of the heel 3, and extends upwardly therefrom to a place on the leg 5 of the boot, in actual practice about nine inches above the heel. The pad extends well over the top of the toe portion of the upper and a trifle past the center line of the front of the leg portion but does not cover the inner side of the boot which is of ordinary construction. By this construction the ankle and the outer side of the wearers foot are protected by the pad from the pressure of the shovel or from contact with rocks. Since a miner uses only one boot as a fulcrum for his shovel, his left or his right boot according to whether he is right or left handed only one boot need be thus reinforced.
In the alternative form of my construction shown in Fig. A the reinforcing pad is flexibly jointed at the base of the leg portion 5 of the boot just above the ankle and instep to allow the boot to bend freely at these points. This jointing may be effected by inserting therein specially flexiblemateriai or merely by forming the pad 6 in two portions which are slightly spaced apart so that the ordinary flexible construction of the boot may provide the necessary flexibility along the line of bending.
The pad may also be formed of a plurality of reinforcing strips, as shown in Fig. 5, or may be jointed in any suitable manner.
What I claim is:
1. In a rubber boot the combinationof a sole; 2. heel; an upper; and a pad applied externally to and permanently secured to the outer side of the upper to provide a wearing surface of greater thickness than that of the rest of the upper for use as a rest or fulcrum, said pad extending from the toe of the boot to the heel and from the sole to the top of the toe' portion of the upper and being adapted to reinforce that portion of the boot overlying the ankle of the wearer.
2. A rubber boot having a sole; a heel; an upper; and a pad applied externally to and permanently secured to the outer side of the upper to provide a wearing surface of greater thickness than that of the rest of the upper for use as a rest or fulcrum, said pad extending slightly past the center line of the front of the boot.
3. A rubber boot having a sole; a heel; an upper; and a reinforcing pad applied externally to and permanently secured to the outer side of the upper to provide a wearing surface of greater thickness than that of the rest of the upper for use as a rest or fulcrum, said pad being substantially quadrilateral with one side thereof adjacent the sole of the boot, a second side extending upwardly from the forward side of the heel, a third side following approximately the center line of the front of the boot, and a fourth side extending substantially at right angles to the second side to meet the third side. i a i a. In a rubber boot the combination of a sole; :1 heel; an upper; and a pad applied externally to and permanently secured to the outer side of the upper to provide. a wearing surface of greater thickness than that of the rest of the upper for use as a rest-or il'ulerum, said pad extending from the toe of theboot to the heel and from the sole to the topot the toe. portion of the upper, said pad being flexibly jointed to allow oi" the bending of the angle of the wearer.
5. In a rubber boot the combination of a sole; a heel; an upper; and a pad applied externally to and permanently secured to the outer side of the upper to provide a wearing surface of greater thickness than that oi the rest of the upper for use as a rest or fulcrum, said pad extending from the toe of the boot to the heel and from the sole to'the top of the toe portion of the upper, said pad being formed in two parts slightly spaced apart to allow of the bending of the ankle of the wearer.
6. In a rubber boot the combination of a sole; a heel; an upper; and a pad applied externally to and permanently secured to the outer side of the upper to provide a wearing surface of greater thickness than that of the rest of the upper for use as a rest or fulcrum, said pad extending from the toe of the boot to the heel and from the sole to the top of the toe portion of the upper, said pad being formed in a plurality of parts slightly spaced apart to allow of the bending of the ankle of the wearer.
7'. In a rubber boot the combination of a sole; a heel; an upper; and a pad applied externally to and permanently secured to the outer side of the upper to provide a wearing surface of greater thickness than that of the rest of the upper for use as a rest or fulcrum, said pad extending across portions of the boot which bend when in use and having lines formed therein running parallel to the lines of bending, adapted to provide the necessary flexibility along the said lines ofbending.
Signed at Kirkland Lake this 18th day of November, 1927.
