Description
June 11, 1929; E. J. DAVIDSON IN S' IRUIBNT FOR CUTTING Till-BANDS OI BKLUGOODS AND m5 LIKE Filed June 17. 1926 INVEN I'Of Patented June 11, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD JAMES DAVIDSON, OF HAYES, ENGLAND.
INSTRUMENT FOR CUTTING THE BANDS OF BALED GOODS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed June 17, 1926, Serial No. 116,720, and in Great Britain June 19, 1925.
This invention relates to an instrument for lifting and cutting the band, wire or the like used to bind baled goods, boxes, crates or the like, of the kind comprising a pair of members adapted to engage with the opposite edges of the band, and so shaped that when the instrument is operated the band is separated from the bale or crate by the engaging members and is brought into a suitable position to be cut by a cutting edge,
or between shearing edges, forming part of the instrument. According to the invention an instrument of the kind referred to is provided comprising a pair of relatively movable handles on one of which are mounted a pair of relatively fixed members which are adapted to engage the opposite edges of the band or the like and to lift said band to separate it from the bale or the like when a rotational movement is imparted to these relatively fixed band engaging members, means being provided on the other handle, adapted when said handle is operated, to sever the separated band. The engaging members are preferably so shaped that on the operation of the instrument one edge of the band is lifted higher, or further away from the bale or crate, than the other in order to facilitate the cutting or shearing operation.
In the preferred form of the instrument the band engaging members are rigidly mounted or integrally formed on one and the same part of the instrument and' are formed with band engaging surfaces approximately spirally disposed, while a shearing member is pivoted on the portion of the instrument carrying the band engaging members and is adapted to co-operate with a shearing edge formed or mounted fixedly on one side of said portion.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the form of instru ment above described in two elevational views at right angles to one another.
In the construction shown in the drawings the band engaging'members 11 and 12 are both mounted on one and the same portion 13 of the instrument, which is fitted with a bar or tube 21, bent at the top to form a handle 22. The members 11 and 12 have band engaging surfaces 14 and 15 respectively, ap-
proximately spirally arranged, so that when the lower ends of the engaging members are placed on either side of the band 16 as shown in Fig. 1 and the instrument is turned in the direction of the arrow A, the members 14 and 15 lift the band from the bale. The engaging member 11 is furnished on its inner face with a recessed portion which only allows the edge of the band on that side to ride up it a limited distance, whilst the engaging surface 15 of the member 12 is so shaped that the band on that side can ride up without obstruction. When the instrument has been turned through approximately a quarter circle into the position shown in Fig. 2 the band on one side will pass over the shearing edge 17 mounted at the back of the engaging member 12. The other shearing edge 18 mounted on the arm 19 pivoted on the bolt 20 passing through the part 13 of the instrument is then brought into operation and shears the band. The pivoted arm 19 is also provided with a handle portion 23.
I claim:
1. An instrument for lifting and cutting the binding band, wire or the like of baled goods, boxes, crates or the like, comprising a pair of relatively movable handle members, a pair of wedge-shaped members carried on one of said handle members, said wedgeshaped members being adapted to engage the opposite edges of the band or the like and to be forced between the band and the bale to separate said band from the bale on rotational movement about a common axis being imparted to the said band engaging mem bers, and means on the other handle member adapted to sever the separated band.
2. An instrument for lifting and cutting the binding band, wire or the like of baled goods, boxes, crates or the like, comprising a pair of spirally arranged and relatively fixed members adapted to engage the opposite edges of the band or the like to separate said band from the bale and means co-operating with said shaped members to sever the separated band.
3. An instrument for lifting and cutting the binding band, wire or the like of baled goods, boxes, crates or the like, comprising a pair of pivotally connected handle members, a pair of spirally arranged and relatively fixed members fixedly mounted on one of said handle members, and adapted to engage the opposite edges of the band or the like and to separate said band from the bale when the 5 handle carrying said spirally arranged members is manipulated to move said spirally arranged members'together about a common axis, and means movable with regard to the spirally arranged members and adapted to sever the separated band.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
EDWARD JAMES DAVIDSON.
