Description

June 11, 1929.
R. E. CHRISTOPHER CAP Filed July 9, 1926 lweztor:
Patented June 11, 19.29.
UNITED STATES RALPH CHRISTOIHER, OF GRINDSTGNE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAP.
Application led July 9,
rIhis invention relates to caps, and more particularly to an artisans cap having an eye protector permanently and, adjustably secured thereto, so as to always be at hand for use to protect the wearers eyes from flying particles.
@ne object` of the present invention is to provide a cap with a novel form of -eye protector or shield which is permanently attached to the cap and may readily be moved into and out of operative position.
Another object is to provide a cap and eye protector of thisclass in which the eye protector may be readily adjusted or moved upwardly Within the outline of the cap when not in use.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of a cap embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation. thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation through the cap.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the body of the cap as a Whole, which may be of any standard design and composed of any suitable material desired. A sweat-band 3 of leather or the like, is sewed or otherwise secured around the lower edge of the body 2, and a stiff vizor 4 is secured to the front edge of the cap to shield the eyes of the wearer. The vizor 4 is shown of the usual curved shape to lit the head of the wearer and projects downwardly so as to shade the eyes. n
The cap shown in the drawings is partienlarly designed for the use of miners and, therefore, is provided with a lamp holder 5.
An eye guard or protector (i, composed of a foraminous material, such as a line wire mesh, and having approximately the same shape as the vizor 4, is hingedly secured to the vizor 4 by elastic strips 7 which are secured to each end of the protector G and to the vizor by riveting, clamping, stitching or the like.V The edges of the foraminous protector are adapted to be bound with leather, fabric or th-e like, as at 8, to protect the users face from abrasion.
One portion 9 of a standard snap 'fastener is secured to the vizor 4, and the other portion 10 of the fastener is secured to the eye 1926. Serial No. 121,393.
protector, so that when the protector is not in use it may be locked up against the cap vizor 4 out of the line of vision of the wearer.
It will, of course, be understood that the eye protector 6, when not in use, may be moved upwardly within the cap body 2, if desired, and .locked in position, or that it may be moved into any desired position within the outline of the cap out of the line of vision of the operator.
IVhen it is desired to use the eye protector, it is only necessary for the wearer to release the snap fastener and permit the eye protector 4 to tall down into position in front of his eyes. The elastic hinge members 7 permit the wearer to adjust the protector to proper position and also cause the upper edge of the protector to fit snugly against the wearei"s forehead so as to hold the protector stationary.
While I have shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto, since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
The combination with an artisans cap, compris'ing` a body portion and vizor permanently secured thereto, of a foraminous eye protector substantially co-eXtensive with said vizor and secured tok said vizor by elastic hinge strips, said hinge strips being pivotally secured to said yizor and said protector, said eye protector having a shape similar to that of said vizor, and being` adapted to be lowered into position in front of the eyes of the wearer of the cap to protect the eyes, and to be moved upwardly from in front of the eyes into a position parallel with said vizor when not in use, a protecting binding around the edge of said protector to protect the wearers face from abrasion, and a two-part snap fastener for detachably locking` said protector to said vizor, one part of said snap fastener being permanently secured to said binding on said protector and the other vpart being permanently secured to said viZor.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
RALPH E. CHRISTOPHER.
