ADVERTISING DEVICE.

This invention relates to improvements in advertising devices and signs of an illuminating character.

Among the principal objects of the present invention are: to provide an advcrtismg device or sign having a source of illumination behind the advertising matter of a flashing or intermittent nature adapted by its alternate periods of illumination and darkness to cause various visual effects in the advertising matter comprising the device or sign; to devise the advertising sign with a plurality of inclined visual surfaces to render the sign visible from opposite directions; to provide a device of the foregoing nature constructed substantially of a single blank of material; to improve and simplify the construction.

Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will appear as the description I proceeds.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings which are to be considered merely as illustrative of the invention and to the details of which I do not intend tobe confined, the blank from which the device may be formed preferably comprises a sheet of relatively tough paper 10 adapted for folding along a medial vertical line 11 indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1. The blank may be considered as divided into two sections by the line 11. One section is cut out as at 12 substantially as shown in the drawings to provide a tongue 13 of a slender elongatet nature, and a vertical extending tongue 14 of the character substantially as shown with inin Figure 3.

clined edges. The tongue 13 is adapted for folding as on the line 15 while the wider tongue 14 may be folded along the line 16. The other section of the blank is provided with a slit 1,7 of a three sided nature forming a substantially rectangular portion 18 which is connected to the main body of the blank along the line 19 and is adapted to fold relative to the body on said line 19. The portion 18 carries an element in the nature of a slip 20 which is integral with the back of the portion 18 left by cutting the partly severed sections 2828.

The advertising device is formed first by bending back the tongues 13 and 14, and the portion 18, and folding the blank upon its medial line 11 and the sections of the blank back so that the sections occupy an angular position relative to each other such as shown the slip 20 forcing the sections 28 back and extending thereover, while the portion 14 is bent downwardly and forms a top for the device, and is held in its position by the portion 18 which serves as the back. It is for this reason that the sides of the portion 14 are in clined as shown in Figure 1 and the skeleton of the advertising device is completed by folding the sections of the blank back until further folding is prevented by the portion 14 and back 18. The folded skeleton then assumes a position shown in Figures 4 and 5 and is arranged preferably with the portion 14 at the top serving as a cover. Access may be had to the interior of the skeleton through the bottom which is preferably left open and the folding parts are maintained in their final positions by the locking action of the tongue 13 in the slip 20. In its final position the advertising device presents the appearance from the front shown in Figure 6, and it-will be seen that it has two openings 21 and 22 arranged in sides which extend angularly to each other so as tobe viewed conveniently from opposite directions. The openings 21 and 22 are preferably covered by the advertising matter, which may be in the form of signs, descriptive matter, or pictures and preferably of a character which presents contrasted effects to the eye of the observer depending upon whether or not the back of the matter is illuminated. This may be achieved by using translucent sheets of paper or screens with advertising matter on the front and on the back so that a different The tongue 13 extends under visual effect is obtained when viewed by light transmitted through from the rear.

The light for illuminating the interior of the device may preferably take the form of an electric bulb 23 which is threaded in a suitable socket 24, the socket extending through the portion 18 which serves as a back for the device and is preferably provided with a reenforcement 25 and a screwthreaded element 26 to which suitable electric conductors 27 conduct current for illuminating the electric bulb. This form of construction has been found to give results, it is simple and sturdy in character although it will be understood that variations therein may be made Without departing from the invention.

During the performance of the advertising device the light is preferably flashed on and off in an alternate or intermittent manner, serving to illuminate the back of the screen placed in the openings 21 and 22 at predetermined intervals of time and for predetermined lengths of time, so that the screens are alternately seen by light transmitted through them, when the light in the rear is illuminated and by light reflected from them, when the light in the back is turned off, and thus advertising effects are seen by the observer.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the class described comprising sections formed of a blank of material and folded upon a medial line into angular relation, a portion struck out from one of said sections and forming a back for the angular sections, means forming a pocket associated with said back, and an elongated tongue formed in the other section and entering said pocket when the portions of the blank are in their final folded positions.

2. A device of the class described comprising sections formed of a blank of material folded upon a medial line into angular rela tion, a portion struck out of one of said sections and folded to form a back to said angular sections, said portion leaving an opening in its section for a screen, a tongue with angular sides formed in the other section and folded upon a line extending substantially perpendicular to the line of folding of the sections, said tongue when folded serving as an end, means formed from said second section and cooperating with means on the struck out portion of the first section for locking the ele ments in their folded positions, said means and. said tongue leaving an opening in the second section for another screen.

3. A device of the class described comprising sections formed of a blank of material folded upon a medial line into angular relation, a portion struck out of one of said sec tions and folded to form a back to said angular sections, said portion having an opening in its section for a screen, a tongue with angular sides fo med in the other section and folded upon line extending substantially perpendicular to the line of folding of the sections, said tongue when folded serving as 70 an end, means formed from said second section and cooperating with means on the struck out portion of the first section for locking the elements in their folded positions, said means and said tongue leaving an opening in the second section for another screen, an electric bulb within the angular sections, and a socket for said bulb associated with the struck out portion forming the back.
