COMBINED BED AND TRUNK.

Original application led August 5, 1927, Serial No. 210,876 Divided and this application filed February 7, 1928. Serial No. 252,593.

This invention relates to an article of furniture, such as a bed, but more particularly to a combined bed, wardrobe and trunk, and is a division of my application Soria-l No. 210,876, filed August 5, 1927, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter' set forth a bed including a head element and a foot element connected together' by side rails and with the head element constructed and arranged to function as a trunk and a compartment for the storage of valuables.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of furniture in the forinof a single unit and functioning as a bed, a normally closedtrunk and a normally closed storage compartment and further with said unit including means to provide for conveniently opening the trunk and` storage compartment.

Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth an article of furniture in the form of a single unit comprising a bed, a storage compartment and a trunk and with the unit` comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient in its use, not impair-ing the appearance of the room in which it is used, readily assembled, conveniently disassembled when required, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of part-s as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that "changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall Within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

An article of furniture inv the form of a unit and in accordance with this invention is a combined bed, Wardrobe, trunk and storage compartment and said unit includesv a pair of -side rails A, B, a head element C and a. foot element D. The side rails' A, B, detachably connect with the elements C and D tor not only coupling them together but for maintaining them in spaced relation. The head element C is of greater height than the foot element D although it is to be understood that the elements C and D can be constructed ot any desired height. l

As the side rails A and B are of like construction, but one will be described, as the description of one will apply to theether. The side rails are oppositely disposed with respect to each other and are of angle shaped cross section and each side rail comprises a vertically disposed portion 1 and a horizontally disposed portion 2 and with the latter extending inwardly at right angles with respect to the bottom of the former'. Secured to the inner face of the vertical portion 1, in proximity to each end thereof', and extending down through the horizontal portion 2, as Well as projecting a substantial distance therebelow, is a vertically disposed coupling pin 3, vwhich has its upper portion iXedly secured to the inner face of the vert i, cal portion 1 of the rail. from its outer face, in proximity to each end thereof, a headed coupling lug 4. The pins 3 and lugs 4 coact with the elements C and D for the purpose of detachably connecting the side rails therewith, whereby the elementsvC and D will be coupled together and maintained in spaced relation and the manner in which the said pins and lugs associate with said elements C and D will be presently referred to. The side rails can be of any appropriate length desired and any lVhen the side rails are mounted in position relative to the elements C and D, they abut the inner faces of said elements, in a manner as shown in Figure 2.

The head element C includes a pair of vertically disposed spaced posts or standards 5, 6, and each of which'has connected to its lower end a castor 7. The posts 5, 6, are of appropriate height and have the lower end portionsthereof tapered as indicated at 8. Arranged between the posts 5, 6, at the upper ends of the tapered portions 8 is a horizontally disposed combined brace and connecting member 9 having its side edges Hush with the front and rear edges of the posts. The width of the member 9 corresponds to the width of either of the posts and secured between the posts a substantial distance above the member 9, is a fiat horizontally disposed combined brace and connecting member 10, and which is flush with the for-- ward and end edges of said posts. Positioned between the members 9 and 10, and Hush with the` forward edges of the posts, is a vertically disposed wall forming member 11 which extends from the post 5, to the post 6, and abuts against the upper face of the member 9 and against the lower ace of the member 10. The thickness of the meinber 11 is materially less than the width ot either of the members 9, 10. Arranged between the members 91and 10 and flush with the rear edges of the posts 5, 6, is'a wall forming member consisting of a stationary lower section 12, and a hinged upper section 13 which constitutes a door. The hinged connection between the sections 12 and 13 is indicated at 14. The sections 12 and 13 extend from the post 5 to the post 6 and abut'the upper face of the member` 10. The section 13 extends from the post to the post 6 and is detachably connected with the member 10 by a latch 15. The sections 12 and 13 are of a thickness materially less than the width ofthe members 9 and 16. The posts 5, 6, in connection with the members 9, 10, the member 11 and the sections 12, 13 provide a storage compartment 16 and entrance is had thereto by means of shitting the section 13 outwardly upon the hinged connection 14. The compartment 16 is provided for the storing of valuables and access can only be had thereto when the head eleoutwardly. The entrance to the compartment 16 is arran fed at the rear of the head element C and w ien the article of furniture is used said section 13 opposes that wall which the head element C is arranged in close proximity to. By this arrangement.

it reduces surreptitious entrance to the compartment 1G to a minimum.

Arranged between the post-s 5, 6, in proximity to their upper ends, is a fiat horizontally disposed combined brace and connecting member 17 having secured upon its top and Hush with its forward edge an ornamenting head piece 18 which is disposed vertically and extends from the post 5 to the post 6. The member 18 is secured in any suitable manner to the posts 5, 6 and member 17. That part of the element C between the members 10 and 17 is open and pivotally supported therein is a trunk, container or receptacle referred to generally at 19 and which includes a body portion comprising a bottom 20, side walls 21, 22, end walls 23, 24 each provided with a rectangular opening 25 and a guide stri 26 which is secured upon the top edge o the side wall 21, projects inwardly therefrom and extends from the end wall 23 to the end wall 24. The upper face of the strip 26, at the rear thereof, is mortised as at 27 'to provide a seat. The side wall 21 is the outer side wall and the side wall 22 the inner side wall and the bottom 20 and end walls 23, 24 project rearwardly from the side wall 22, see Figure 4. Connected to the posts 5, 6, and arranged above and in proximity to the member 10, and further in proximity to the forward edges of the posts, is a bar 28, upon which the lower part of each of the rearwardly extending portions of an end wall is pivotcd, see Figures at and 7. The rod 28 is positioned in close proximity to the upper face of the bottom 20. Secured upon the upper face et the bottom 20, abutting against the rear side wall 22 and extending fromone end wall to the other is a guide strip 29.

Arranged within t-he body portion 19 is a tray or drawer 30` provided at each end with a handle 31. y slidably mounted upon the bottom 20, is arranged below the strip 26 and slides against the guide strip 29. The tray 30 can be withdrawn through an opening 25 from either end of the body portion 19. Hinged to the rear side wall 22, as at 32 is a lid or cover 33 for the open top body portion 19. The lid or cover 33 is rabbeted as at 34, to engage the rabbet 27 when the lid 'or cover is in closure position with respect to the open top of the body portion 19. The lid or cover 33 also provides means for The drawer or tray 30,

arresting the shifting of the tray from the body portion 19, in either direction, unless the lid lor cover is swung to open position and 'for this purpose the lid or cover 33 is formed at each end with a depending flange 34, which when the lid 33 is mounted in closure position extends into the tray, to the position shown in Figure .6 whereby the lianges 34 will be arranged inwardly of the ends of the tray and will prevent the latter from being pulled outwardly in either direction with respect to the body portion 19 through the end walls 23, 24 of the latter.

Connected to the strip 26 are flexible suspension members 35 and which extend between the posts 5, 6. The lower ends ofthesuspension members 35 are iXedly secured to the strip 26 as at 36 and the upper ends of the members 35 are secured to the rear edge of the'member 17 -as at 37..v The bottom 20 of the body portion 19 is a'rrnged in a manner whereby it will be in alignment with the wall forming member 11 when the trunk is swung to an upward position to-be arranged between the posts 5, 6 and to project rearwardly therefrom, see Figure 6.

The lid or cover 33 has a handle 38 and is.

secured in closure position, with respect to the body portion 19, by a pivoted latch 39' which is carried by the strip 26 and is shiftable to overlap the cover when the latter engages the rabbet 27. The member 18 is provided with a resilient, depending latch 40 for latching the lid or cover 33 in an open position with respect to the body portion 19, see Figure 2. The end walls 23, 24 are provided with projections 41 which Seat on the member 1() when the trunk is closed and po- .sitioned within the opening between the members 10 and 17, see Figure 6. The bottom 20 is provided with a latch 42 which engages with a keeper 43, carried by the member 17 at the front thereof and the latch 42 provides means for maintaining the trunk `when it is swung into the opening formed between the members 10 and 17, see Figure 6. When the trunk is in the position lshown in Figure 6, the flexible suspension members 35 are arranged at the rear of the element C and in this connection see Figure 6. lhe pivot r'od 28 is so arranged that when swinging the trunk forwardly it will not engage the wall against which the head element 6 opposes. p

The end walls 23, 24 of the body portion element D, at an appropriate distance above the lower end of each thereof, has secured thereto supeiposed socket forming members 44 and 45. The members on the element C. are forwardly directed and on the element when the side rails are coupled to the headelement-C and foot element D. The sockets formed by the members 44 are disposed at right angles to the sockets formed by the members. 45. The posts 6 of the element D are provided with castors 7.

I t is thought the many advantages of an article`of 'furniture in the ferm of a unit and functioning as a bed, trunk and storage compartment, can be readily understood, and'although the preferred embodiment of the invention 4is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within. the scope ofthe invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

1. In a bed, a head element including means to provide a pivoted trunk and suspension members for the trunk, said trunk consisting of an open top body portion provided with an opening at each end, a tray within the trunk and shiftable outwardly througheither of ysaid openin s, and a lid for closing the trunk, said lid including means to prevent the shifting of. the tray vthrough either of the openings when. the lid portion, and said lid including means to prevent the removalY of the 'tray when the lid is in closure position` 3. In a bed a head member including a pair of spaced posts, a storage element ari ranged between the posts and including a pair of receptacles, one shiftablelaterally with respect to and supported by the other, the said other section having a shiftable closure therefor, and means carried by the posts for pivot-ally supporting said element.

4. Inv a bed a head member including av pair of spaced posts, astorage element arcured to the posts at the upper ends thereof, and suspension means for ,said element, said means connected to said cross member and 10 to said element;
