IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE-LEAF SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 71,570, dated December 28, 1875 application filed October 4, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID JAcKs0N, of Ohicago, in the countyof (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Leaf Supporter, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of that class of tables which are provided with folding or swinging extension-leaves; its object being to provide for the same a supporting-lever which will be automatically thrown into place as the leaf is elevated, and render it unnecessary to reach under the table to adjust it by hand.

My invention consists in the combination, with a table provided with an ordinary hinged leaf, of a lever for supporting the leaf, and a depending curved hanger, the said lever bein g swiveled in a barrel adapted to be secured to the under side of the leaf, and provided with a circular opening on the under side, and containing a convolute spring, which causes the rear end of the lever to bear against the curved end of the hanger, and automatically throws the said end against the face of said hanger when the table-leaf is lifted, the said circular opening in the barrel having a segmental recess at one side, which forms, in connection with a pin or projection on the lever, a stop to limit its motion in both directions, as hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of a table with a portion of the same removed, in order to more clearly show my improved device and the method of applying the same; Fig. 2, aview similar to that shown in Fig. l, with the leaf down; Fig. 3, a bottom view, and Fig. 4 a detached View.

The letter A represents a table, of ordinary construction; and B, the folding leaf, thereto attached, as usual, by means of hinges. G represents a lever, to the center'of which is attached a fulcrum-pin, c, which has hearings in a barrel, D, which sits in a recess, E, formed on the under side of the table-leaf, and is secured thereto by means of screws or other fastening devices. The barrel has a circular opening on the under side, at the edge of which is formed a segmental recess, d, the shoulders at the end of which form stops, in connection with the spring 0, secured to the lever G, to limit its motion in both directions. Said barrel contains a convolute spring, F, one end of which is attached to its inner walls, and the other to the lever G, in such manner as to give a rotary pressure to the lever. G represents a curved hanger, secured to the under side of the table in any convenient manner, having an inclined lower edge, against which the end of the lever works, and an abutment or bearing-face in front, against which the end of the lever bears, and by which it is supported and the leaf held in position when raised.

The operation of my improved device will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The convolute spring causes the rear end of the lever to bear against the inclined circular edge of the hanger, and, as the table-leaf is raised, said end follows the said edge until the leaf is fully elevated, when the end of the lever falls against the abutment or front face of the hanger, and is thereby locked in position.

The abutting surfaces of the lever and hanger are slightly beveled in opposite directions, to allow the said abutting surfaces to fall readily into contact.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination with a table provided with a swinging leaf, the lever G, swiveled to a barrel, I), adapted to be attached to theunder side of the leaf, and containing a convolute spring, connected to said lever, and provided with the segmental recess d, the pin 0, and curved hanger Gr, attached to the under side of the table, the whole constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
