IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,543, dated December 28, 1875; application filed November 27, 1875.
. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM EDWARD ASTON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my buckle. Fig. 2 is atransverse vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical central sectional view thereof.
This invention has relation to buckles. The novelty consists in the combination of a metal plate having raised spring clasping-flanges on its lateral edges, with a tongue-plate hinged to one end of the flanges, and having vibratory motion, whereby means are provided for securing the same when the said tongue-plate is thrust below the spring-flanges, all as hereinafter shown and described; also, in the bedplate having raised spring-flanges, ears, and clinching-points, all made of one piece of metal.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a strap having small perforations arranged at suitable distances apart, for a purpose hereinafter described, and to one end of which is rigidly secured a metallic bed-plate, B, secured to the same by means of metal points projecting-from the under side, and
passing through the strap to which it is clinched. O designates spring flanges arranged on the lateral edges of bed-plate B, for a purpose hereinafter explained. a a designate small perforations made in one end of the flanges O, and designed to receive the journals of a tongue-plate, D, by which means it has vibratory motion. b designates a metal point projecting downward from the tongueplate, and designed to be received in the perforations above described in the strap.
It will be seen that the advantage possessed by my improved buckle is that the bed-plate, being provided with spring flanges C, the tongue-plate D, when thrust down against the said flanges, will cause the flanges to yield and allow the said tongue-plate to pass between them, thereby holding it firmly in position.
It will also be seen that when the tongueplate is in the position above described, the metal point 12 passing through the perforation in the strap will hold it rigidly in position against displacement.
I11 practice the bed-plate blank B is constructedof one piece of metal, having upon its lateral edges extensions Gr, provided with perforated lugs g, which extensions, when bent up, will form the spring-flanges C. It has also, upon its ends, similar extensions G, which are provided with points i, which, when bent downward, will form the clinching-points t', by means of which the said bed-plate is secured to the strap. This blank will be struck out of a piece of sheet metal of suitable thickness at a single stroke of a die, and the bedplate will be formed by bending the lateral extensions G upward to form flanges O, and the points i downward to provide means of attachment to the strap.
What I claim as new, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a buckle, the combination of the metallic bed-plate B, having raised spring clasp ing-flanges C and a hinged tongue-plate, D, substantially as specified.
2. The blank B"having lateral extensions G, with perforated lugs g' and end extensions G, with points 1' adapted for use, substantially as specified.
