IMPROVEMENT IN CHlN-RESTS FOR VlOLlNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,541, dated December 28, 1875; application tiled November 20, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM W. WHITE, of Oskaloosa, in the county ofMahaska and'State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chin-Rests for Violins, of which improvement the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the said improvement, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a chin-rest embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of theclamp-hook detached; and Fig. 4, a side elevation, partly in section, and showing a modification in the construction of the device.

The object of this invention is to provide improved means for rendering the rest adjustable to difi'erent violins.

In the drawing, A represents that part of the rest which clamps the upper side of the violin, and B is a shank, which enters the heel of the rest. a a, in Figs. 2 and 3, are notches or serrations cut in the lower end of the shank, as shown. This shank is made vertically yielding by being bent for that purpose, and if a single coil is made therein, as represented in the drawing, it will be sufiiciently yielding for the purposes for which it is intended. bent and cut to receive the lower end of the shank B, when the serrations a a are cut therein, so that the book may be vertically adjusted on the shank, and held at any height within the range of this adjustability, by means of the serrations a a, which then engage the hook for that purpose, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2. The serrations a a, however, may be made in the upper end of the shank, and in the latter case the heel of the part A is provided with a bush, D, to receive the shank, and a lip, c, projectsinwardly from the bush, so as to engage the serrations a a, as shown in Fig. 4. When a bush is employed for the purpose set forth the book 0 is rigidly attached to the shank, or may be made in the same piece therewith.

It will be perceived from the foregoing description that the book 0, Whether adjustably mounted on the shank or rigidly attached thereto, may be adjusted to different violins with facility, and also readily applied and removed from the same violin, the serrations a a, whether on the upper or lower end ofthe shank, admitting of this result. The shank should be made of metal sufficiently flexible or springlike to be slightly yielding, when constructed as described.
