UNITED STATES GEORGE ALONZO'LEVY, or EAST s1 LOUIS, ILLINOIS,
ELECTRIC SIGN. 1
Application filed February 6, 1928. Serial No. 252,321. I
.to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
' With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made Within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings z- 7 Figure 1 shows in perspective, a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; v
a plan of the supplemental r of Figure 6 In carrying out the invention there is provided a box-like main member 1 which may be supported in any desired way, the main member 1 being shown as supplied with end hangers 2 pivotally mounted on a bracket rod 3. Panels 4 are mounted'in the ends of the main box-like member 1, and one of the ends of the member 1 may be in the form of a door 5 which is hingedly mounted as shown at 6, to give access'to the interior of the main member. The part 1 has a bottom panel 7 and side panels 8. The panels 8, 7, and 4, are so constructed that light can pass through them, and, ordinarily, the aforesaid panels are made of translucent material, such as glass, that is frosted or painted.
I The panels 8 and 4, and sometimes the panel 7, are inscribed with advertising ma terial (not shown) relating to some standard product The merchant selling the product generally likes to have his name appear on the sign, and if the merchants name is placed on one of the panels, along with the lettering advertising product, the last-mentioned lettering is upset, or has to be specially painted,
since there is no certainty how many letters there Wlll be in the'name of the merchant,
or Where or how he will insist upon having his name placed on the sign. The foregoing.
being understood, it may be stated that here tofore it has been somewhat diflicult to turn out a standard form of sign with a-fixed lettering, and still have the name of the merchant: and one object of this invention stated broadly, is to provide a sign which will remedy the diliiculty above mentioned.
With the above and other objects in view,
a pair of retainers 9, such as eyes, are mounted:
in the bottom 10 of the boX-like main member- 1. In the retainers 9, a support ll, in the form of a rod, is pivotally received, the sup- N port or rod 11 extending-through a supple mental sign member 12, which generally, is:v
tion. The support or rod 11 is located in a the upper angle of the supplemental sign member 12, as disclosed in Figure 7, and
projects through the end walls of the supplemental sign member, asdisclosed in Figure 6 of the drawings. A nut 14 1s preferably threaded on one end of the rod 11,7and there is ahead 15 on the opposite end of the rod 11,
the head 15 sometimes being in the form of a simple right angle hook. The rod 11 :be thrust endwise throughiithe eyes and through the supplemental sign member '12,
and when the nut 14 is mounted in place, tlie supplemental sign member 12 will be supi-T.
ported pivotally below the bottompanel 7 of the'main sign member 1 insuch a position that the name 16 of, the merchant will bemeans be employed for illuminating thebox-like member 1. In the present instance, but notof necessity,- several electric lights 17 are located Within the main member 1, on
the top thereof.
It will be understood readily that the panels 8 and 4, and perhaps the panel 7- of Y 1 the box-like main member 1,: may carry any standard lettering, which need not be changed, regardless of the proprietorship of the store, the name of the proprietor being inscribed on the supplemental sign member 12, as shown at 16. The letterlng on the mam member 1 of the sign can remain unchanged,
regardless of the name of the proprietor of the store, and if the store changes hands, the.
NVhat is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a'
