IQIIEPLEFIOQ nuns rna nor'rnns AND THE Linn.
Application filed was s, ieaa-seria 'no. 226,143, and in Canada March as, 1927.
' This invention relates particularly to infantsvnursing bottles of the type disclosed in my pending i now Patent No. 1,668,227 of which th s application is a divisional part, and its primary object is to provide a new and improved nipapplication Serial N o. 177,0.55,
at its free end; Thepreferred embodiment for securing the foregoing desideratum consists of a pair of vertically spaced external collars 5 and 6, respectively, formed integral- 1y with the bottle neck and encircling the same 0 at the mouth thereof, and a pair of corre- I plewhich is so constructed and arranged that spondingly spaced internal continuous beads it may be easily applied to and removed from the bottle neckand when in position thereon. maybe snugly interlocked therewith there by obviating leakage and preventing accidental displacement when in use. I
To this end my invention consists of the construction and particular arrangement of the parts hereinafter described and illustrat-" ed and pointed out in the claim In the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the.
same parts: L
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a nursmg bottle constructed according to my invention; Figure 2 is a fragmentary part elevation and part sectional view of the bottle neck with the nipple or teat mounted thereon U Figure 3 is a' partial elevation and partial section of the nipple detached from the bottle and Figures 4 and 5 are detail elevations true nipple, a modification being shown in Figure 5. a
Referring to these drawings which illustrate-the preferred embodiment of my invention the bottle proper is indicated at 2, the
' comparatively short neck thereof at 3 and the nipple which is constructed and arranged to i be stretched over the bottle mouth and interlocked therewith at 4t.
Heretofore the nipple has been the source 7 of constant trouble owing to its tendency to come oil when in use, or to'become so displaced as to cause leakage, and many attempts have been made to provide a solution of the problem. To my knowledge, however, none have proved entirely satisfactory and much difficulty is still being experienced with the various types of nipples now in use. The
' present invention seeks to overcome the problem by so constructing the bottle neck and the nipple-that one will interlock with the other in such a manner that the possibility of the nipple becoming accidentally dislodged 1 or displaced is positively-prevented, in fact with the construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described it is impossible to pull the nipple olf thebottle if it is grasped snugly adheres to the rounded external surof the nippleand adapted to be stretched over the bottle neck, the band, when in position, snugly conforming to the irregular shape presented by the, collars and extending downwardly for a short distance below the same.
In order to obtain the positive interlocking relationship hereinbefore referred to, the underside of each collar is recessed asat 11 in hooked form, and the dimensions and -rela tive spacing of the beads on the nipple are such that when in position on the bottle the beads snuglvfit within the recesses. It is ob- 8O vious from this construction and arrangement of parts that any direct pull on the nipple away from [the bottle will simply cause the nipple to grip the bottle more tightly. The interlocking relationship is clearly shown in section in Figure 2 and it will be noted that owing to the inherent elasticity of the band and the-breastor shoulder portion the nipple faces of the collars indicated at 5 and 6 respectively so that a snubbing action at these points is obtained which further assists in preventing dislodgement of the beads from their respective grooves. The top collar 5 is rounded off as at 5 to facilitate the applica- I tion of the nipple and merges with the bottle neck to form a flared mouth. The lower'collar 6 dces not project outwardly asfar as the top collar, nor is its recess as deep, and its 7 external surface is inclined upwardly and inwardly tothe top recess as indicated at 12. The lower collar consequently tapers upwardly to the top collar in frustro-conical form so that if the lower nipple bead should become sufliciently displaced to slip over the lower collar it will slide along the inclined face 12 into thetop recess. The beads are of substantially half-round cross-section and are respectively located at the junction of the top edge of the band and the bottom edge of the breast or shoulder portion of the nipple and at a point a short distance below the same a on the inner face of the band.
' In view of the 'fact that the collarspioject beyond the normal exterior of theneck and that the nipple positively interlocks therewith it is'd'esirable to provide meansgfor facilitating the'application. of the nipple and its re-.
To this 'end tlie band has integrally formed therewith one or more moval from the bottle.
downwardly extending tabs or lips 13,- and 14 constituting. fingerholds which may be grasped in the applying and removing-oper- Y ations. These lips are located diametrically clamped against the bottle rice .with theoppo'site one another and terminate in thicks ened edges 15, and their side edges are cugved upwardly and outwardly as at 16 at the'pointsat which such edges. approach the bottom edge of the bandthereby providing an increased width at the junction of the tab with the v band and obviating any dang'erof the band a i being torn or split when the nippleis'peeled ofl the bottle.
Inapplying a nipple or teat constructed according to my invention .bne o the lips is i forefinger of one hand while the band is distended sufiiciently by graspin with the other hahd, until a inbe pulled over the collars to position in which the beads lie snugly within therecesses. In the rethe other lip moval operation it is only necessary to grasp 1 either one of the lips and peel it backward until the beads clear the collars.- 7
Although this invention is primarily designed for use inconnection with nursing ber valves-are fitted over valvular openings u in the bottles at or adjacent totheir bottom endsand it is obvious that theapplication of the interlocking feature and the fingerholds,
thereto is within the scope of the present invention. v
lVhat I claim is as follows dentald-isplacement and comprising a skirt portion adapted to fit'around the neck of the ottle and; provided with a pair of vertically spaced internal beadsafda-pted to engage under-a pair of undercut collars on the bottle neck, and. a pair of finger tabs extending i A nursing bottle'-nipple, adapted to sb interlock, with the bottle neck as to prevent acci-- downwardly from the edg'e of said skirt-pop.
