FEQEQ DISAPPEARING HEADREST FOR BARBER CHAIRS.

Application filed March 17, 1928. Serial No. 262,361.

My invention has reference to an improvement in barber chairs and more particularly to an improvement in a disappearing head rest for such chairs.

In the use of barber chairs and when the head rest is not required, the head rest is usually removed from the barber chair and is sometimesmislaid, broken or lost.

The object of my invention is to improve the construction of a head rest for barber chairs, whereby the head rest may be raised or lowered at will or dropped into a pocket in the back of the barber chair, in an out of the way position.

Another object of my invention is to provide a barber chair with a head rest which may be adjusted up or down to any desired position relative to the back of the barber chair.

A further object of my invention is to simplify the construction of a head rest for barber chairs, thereby reducing the cost of manufacturing to a minimum.

My invention consists in the perculiar and novel construction of a disappearing head rest for barber chairs, said head rest having. details of construction, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.

In the drawing 5, indicates the back of a barber chair having a pocket 6, a central vertical bore 7, which extends downward from the pocket 6, and 8 a notch in the upper back portion of the pocket 6, which is open at the top. A head rest 9 has a finger piece 10, which enters the notch 8, when the head rest is, lowered into the pocket 6. The head rest 9, is pivotally secured at 11, to a stem 12, and having saw teeth 13, and which is slidable up or down in the bore 7. A pawl 14, engages the saw teeth 13, and is pivotally secured to a supporting member 15,

which in turn is secured in a recess 16, to the back 5. This pawl let has an L shaped arm 17, which extends outward through an opening 18, in the back 5, and terminates into a button shaped end 19. A fixed whip spring 20, holds the pawl 14, against the saw teeth 13, under spring tension.

In the operation of my improved head rest for barber chairs, the barber takes hold of the head rest finger piece 10, and raises the head rest out of the pocket 6, to the desired position. The pawl 14, engaging the saw teeth 13, holds the head rest in this position. hen the head rest 9 is not required for use, the button 19 is pressed in, thereby releasing the pawl 1 1, from the saw teeth 13, of the stem 12. This causes the head rest 9 to drop down and it is guided into the pocket 6, in the back 5, of the chair into an out of the way positoin.

I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction shown, as the details of c011- struction may be varied to accomplish the same result.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new 1. In a barber chair having a back in which are walls forming a cavity having an open top, an adjustable head rest in said cavity, means comprising a linger piece on the head rest for raising the head rest out of the cavity into a position for use and means for holding the head rest in its raised position.

2. In a barber chair, walls forming a cavity with an open top in the back of the chair, an adjustable head rest slidably secured in the cavity in the back of the chair, means for holding the head rest at any desired height from the back of the chair and means for releasing the head rest, whereby it drops by gravity into the cavity in the back of the chair, for the purpose as described.

3. A chair backha-ving walls forming an adjustable head rest cavity, said cavity having a closed bottom, closed sides and ends and an open top which opens outwards through the top of the chair back, an adjustable stem in the chair back, a head rest in the chair back cavity and pivotally secured to the adjustable stem, and means for pivotally securing the head rest to the adjustable stem, for the purpose described.
