PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER WALKER, 015 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
MITTEN.
Application filed July 11, 1927. Serial No. 204,878.
This invention relates to mittens especially adapted to protect the wearers hands-when handling hot articles in order that the hands may be adequately protected from the heat and that the articles handled may be protected from contact with the hands.
The above recited and other objects of the invention will be more fully disclosed in the following specification and will be exemplified in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear view of a glove, adapted for the left hand, embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a section through the same taken on the line 22 of Figure 1 viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
In carrying out the invention the mitten generally comprises a palm cover or shield 3 preferably in the shape of a mitt at the finger end 4 and having a wrist covering extension 5 and a thumb extension 6.
The palm cover 3 is preferably formed of two pieces of canvas or other suitable fabric 7 and 8, having therebetween a sheet of heat insulating material 9 preferably formed of asbestos.
Secured to the edge of the palm cover is a back cover 10 formed of canvas or other suitable heat resisting fabric and the edges of the palm cover and the back cover are suitably bound with a tape 11 as shown.
The material forming the back cover is full and is stitched as at 12, 13 and 14 to the palm cover 3, in such manner as to form the linger pockets 15, 16, 17, 18 and the thumb pocket 19. Y
A loop 20 is secured to the wrist extension 5 adjacent the little finger side thereof, in order that the mitt may be conveniently hung up on a nail when laid aside and secured to the wrist extension adjacent the thumb side is a hook 21, By use of hook'21 the wearer may eonveniently'hook the mitt to his belt and then withdraw his hand therefrom, thus I I adapted to project temporarily disposing of the mitt without the necessity of using the other hand forthe operation. When he wishes to place the mitt on the hand again, the reverse operation may be practiced.
The back cover, at the pocket edges, is over the knuckles of the wearer and is also provided with side projecting shields 22 and 23 and a flap or shield 24 which projects over the fleshy portion of thehand between the index finger and the thumb. The recess 24 in the back cover by the side of said flap 24 next to the thumb increases the flexibility of the thumb part of the mitten.
By the above recited structure it will be obvious that an efiicient mitten for the pro tection of the hand has been provided, which will prevent heat from reaching the tender portion thereof and at the same time will not hamper the wearer in the duties to be performed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A mitten construction comprising a palm cover; a back cover secured thereto to form finger and thumb pocketsand a. hook adapted to suspend a mitten from a belt secured to the wrist edge of said palm cover, the free end of said hook extending outwardly fromthe wrist opening of the mitten and toward the palm thereo 2.- A mitten construction comprising a palm cover and a back cover secured thereto to form finger and thumb pockets and provided witlra flap adapted to project over the fleshy part of the hand between the index finger and the thumb, there being a recess in said back cover by the side of said flap next to the thumb adapted to increase the flexibility of the thumb portion of the mitten.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ELMER WALKER.
